I loved this book. The idea of a vampire being able to transform back to a human was great. It was such a fun easy read and I became very invested in the characters.

Although a bit predictable, I really enjoyed Mere Mortals. It was funny, it was light-hearted--everything it promised to be!

Vampires are definitely back in YA and readers should be thrilled! Mere Mortals is such a fun addition to the genre. Lange's take on vampires was pure fun. Two teens who have been vampires for the last hundred years are suddenly placed back into the mortal world and they have to go back to high school.

Mere Mortals recalls some of the YA paranormals of the past like Hex Hall and Vampire Academy. It feels both familiar and fresh. Readers will love stepping into Charlie's shoes and wondering how they would handle being in such a different world. This book has a little bit of romance, a little bit of mayhem, and a whole lot of paranormal chaos!

I LOVE novels about vampires. There is something about vampires that can fix mood. Maybe because vampires are classics. Or maybe vampires stories play out similarly? I am basic and like the same things in different font. I went into Mere Mortals thinking I was going to get a classic vampire story.

Boy was I WRONG.

Mere Mortals revives the vampire story with a fresh new take. The vampires are turned into mortals and now have to go through high school. This book was fast-paced and fun. I loved all the characters, especially Charlie and Reg. My only issue is I felt the choice at the end of the novel was out of character. Other than that I loved this book.

You should totally check this book out if you are a fan of Vampire Diaries

Have you ever wondered what Damon Salvatore's life was like after he took the cure to be with Elena?
This is a hilarious take on what vampires go through when they are no longer vampires
I loved every minute of it. It had me laughing until I was crying

This reminded me of a Vampire Schitt's Creek. I kept expecting Charlie to say "Ew, David" whenever her brother suggested she wear flannel to fit in. Adorable, kitschy, fun!

I like this one and had me laughing out loud on parts. I really enjoyed how Reg and Charlie navigated a old but new world. The Lina twist I did not see coming. I loved her and Sal's romance. The ending was a little shocking but good. Sequel please.

✨BOOK REVIEW✨
Mere Mortals
By Erin Jade Lange

This book was cool as it gave off Twilight meets Schitt’s creek vibes big time.

It was a different Vampire story for me, where you have two vampires expelled from the life, and forced to live out their days as humans. Their only guide is a man they call Uncle Sal, who happens to be a slayer.

I loved how this story gave a twisty spin on well known roles, and felt refreshing.

Thanks to @hccfrenzy for sending me an E- ARC in exchange for my review.
This one came out in September 27th and is a perfect Halloween read!
Be sure to check it out 😱

QOTD: If you were a vampire that did wrong, would you rather be staked or live out your mortal life as human and die?
I think I’d choose to live out my days as human and experience it.

This was a fun, light read….kind of a vampire story in reverse I guess. Charlie and Reg are sentenced to life as humans and would give anything to go back to their immortal lives. They are trying to survive life as a human teenager in the time being and kind of learn that it’s not all so bad.
This was the kind of book I needed at this moment, not too heavy and seasonally-appropriate as well. I wasn’t thrilled with how things played out, but it was an interesting read. I can see a lot of teens enjoying this read, so I would recommend to them.

This is a fun twist on the YA vampire novel trope: rather than a mortal pining for a vampire and spending the novel wanting to be turned, this focuses on two vampires--Charlie and her brother Reg--who have been turned into humans as punishment for nearly draining a child of blood. Charlie's angst about her new state, though mildly annoying at first, is understandable, and she has a well-developed cast of characters to help her realize whether she wants to live forever or live as a human teenager. I won't spoil the ending, but it's a twist I wasn't quite expecting.

I enjoyed the journey this book took me on. While I don't think Charlie is a character many people would like, I thought her characterization made sense. Of course she's immature, she's been a teenager for 100 years.

This was a quick read with plenty of fun moments, but the very ending, after the big event, felt rushed, and I was upset with the choice Charlie made in the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In fact,I even woke up early to finish it! It has funny moments and is entertaining throughout. This book gives Twilight and Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes. There are many teenagers in this story but do not let that deter you if you are not in that age group. There is a surprise at the end that I was not expecting. I recommend this book and am sure you will enjoy the ride!

This is a funny fresh take on a vampire story. Reg and Charlie are brother and sister vampires that have been banished from being vampires and are trying to figure out how to make it as humans or even better, how to get back to being vampires. They start off being very concerned about fitting in to the local high school and making a good impression there through fashion. They make friends (and romantic connections) and find that their desire to be vampires again might have bigger consequences than they might have imagined. I really liked this one.

This was such a great twist on a Vampire novel. Two vampires get turned back into mortals, and have to figure out how to survive high school. The plot was fast paced and enjoyable.. I really enjoyed this book.

While I appreciate the original twist, what was intended to be a comedy of 100 year old vampires trying to fit in as high school students didn't pan out exactly as planned. The comedic aspect that's could have been present with being confused by modern youth were not present as both Charlie and Reg had kept up with changes in society.
A story intended to be about vampires was very much a new kid in town struggles to fit in story, no vampire element required.

Look at the cover it's so awesome! and it made me soo excited to read this book. This book was a good fun fast read that I enjoyed somewhat. It was very well written and it had its cute moments and heartwarming. It's not your usual vampire book and I think it was more for the younger crowd. It's not what I was expecting. I feel like there could have been more backstory, it didn't feel like a stand-alone novel. I think there will be more to come. My favourite character was Uncle Sal and my least favourite was Charlotte she was VERY annoying but okay in the end. I also enjoyed the short chapters and fun chapter titles. And you can't forget the twist it was gooood. So it was an okay book for me.

I’m not sure what I expected, but it definitely wasn’t tears. And that’s what I got here at the end! 🥹

Mere Mortals is all about humans— who used to be vampires! They’ve been sentenced to life and are adjusting to high school, while holding out hope for an appeal to become vampires once more!

Charlotte (Charlie) and Reginald (Reg) are the sibling best friends everyone wants to know. They’re new in town, new in school, and new to humanity. The story is from Charlie’s point of view, and she pretty much detests humanity. She knows immortality is better and has her eyes set on reclaiming her immortality at all costs. Her brother is making friends and enjoying his humanity, making the best of a bad situation.

Things I loved:

👴 Sal, their foster uncle. He’s grumpy and hilarious. And has a soft side you eventually get to see. It had me tearing up.

💚 The chapter names. I love when books do chapter titles, especially if they’re funny. Love it.

😎 Charlie. She was so flipping irritating, but she grew so much, and I ended up really loving her character. GROWTH. 🌱

🧛🏻 the Vampire Slayer Lore in this. It’s really neat, and a little different than other books I’ve read… not that I’m an expert on vampire and vampire slayer lore, but I liked it a lot.

🎃 It’s autumnal. Perfect for right this moment and I to October if you’re looking for a read that has autumn vibes, but isn’t scary. 🍁

A big thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for gifting me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Forget everything you've ever known about vampires. Simply because this isn't a book specifically about vampires. Instead it is about a duo vampires getting turned back into humans in order to face the horrors of high schoo.

Mere Mortals by Erin Jane Lange is YA paranormal (with just the right amount of hilarity and coming-of-age spice) novel that revolves around the tumultuous life of Charlie. Who just so happened to be a vampire, until she did an unspeakable thing and was turned back into a human as punishment. And like the famed Cullens, she has to tackle high school. While also dealing with the many horrors that is being a human teenager. Boys and insatiable blood thirst included.

I think I would have liked this novel a bit more, if it were not slapped so hard with the 'modern and edgy' stick. As I found the writing style was a bit hard to get past a few times, as it often read as Charlie simply talking to the reader. Instead of being a narrator to her story. (If you get what I mean) Not to mention a few scenes were nothing short of cringe and eye rolling.

Regardless, it was fun read and proved to be the adequate side path to the many fantasies piling up in my TBR. Should you want a fresh take on the vampire overload that is the YA section, definitively check this title out.

Mere Mortals is such an incredibly fun and unique take on the vampire genre! I mean, we have all read about vampires, and folks turning into vampires, but who here has read a book about becoming mortal again!? I certainly had not! I found it really refreshing and enjoyable, frankly!

We are introduced to Charlie, who kind of loved being a vampire, and is pretty salty to find herself and her vamp brother Reg in a cabin in the boonies, having just been sentenced to mortaldom for Vampire Crimes™. Reg is way less angry about it than Charlie, who vows she's going to get them back to all their undead glory. But until she figures out how, they must coexist with other humans of their current mortal age- which means heading to high school!

The book was fun, and sweet, and heartwarming. I loved Charlie figuring out who she was as a person, vampire shenanigans aside. I loved that she found people to care about, too, as she thought she was kind of incapable to such things. Her relationship with Reg was really complex too, as they basically considered each other siblings, even though they had no recollection of their prior mortal lives.

The vampire lore was also really fun- I loved the hierarchy of the vampires, and learning about their rules and systems. I also really loved the story about the older man they end up living with, and finding out what his role in the vampire society is.

Bottom Line: Fun and unique, this was an entertaining and enjoyable read!
