I enjoyed this story. I love stories written by Emily E.K. Murdoch and no matter how many of her books I have read - I am always pleasantly surprised with this authors ability to combine serious historical situations or events with a romance story that is poignant and entertaining with a perfect HEA.

I highly recommend this book and the entire “The Governess Bureau” series!

I definitely recommend A Governess of Wise Years to any historical reader who loves governess/aristocrat dynamics and a hero who has really been pining over years for his heroine. Edwin has never recovered from Vivienne refusing his marriage proposal years ago and, when she arrives as a governess in his home for his daughter, he only yearns for her more. Vivienne still has feelings for him, too, and eventually the froideur over the past begins to thaw and they are drawn together. A classic governess tale that is enjoyable and well-executed!

Wasn't too bad of a book, but wasn't amazing. I have not read the previous books in this series, although it is a disjointed romance series and does not need to be read in a particular order. The plot was decent, if not a little repetitive with some of the arguments the two main characters had. Overall, this was your typically regency romance, but it did not go above and beyond my expectations.

This is the sixth and final book of what has been a fun and delightful series, Governess Bureau. Vivienne, who is the owner of the bureau is beside herself. Each governess she has assigned a post to has ended up marrying the head of the family or someone within the family causing her business to be knee deep in scandal. She is resolved to repair the Bureau's reputation and decides to take a post herself, bringing her to the household of Edwin, Viscount Bysshe. His adoptive daughter is giving him quite the time, and he is need desperate need of help. He doesn't know how to relate to his daughter Laura and engages Vivienne as her governess. But what makes this interesting is that they have a history. Fifteen years ago he asked her to marry him and she refused thinking he would not support her entrepreneurial pursuits. He is still bitter at the fact that she refused him and wants to see her fail. There is a lot of emotion and push and pull of feelings before the story comes to a satisfying conclusion.
These stories have been fun to read and I can't wait to read the next series Ms Murdoch treats us to!

The Governess, the Viscount, and the Past that Stood Between Them

The Governess Bureau is closing, or is it? Vivienne disagrees, and if you ask her, she will tell you that she can save it. Now, she is traveling to the house of the man she rejected fifteen years ago. She is about to be governess to his to his daughter. The Bureau is in the papers, mired in scandal. Governesses from the bureau fell in love with their masters and married them. This is simply not done, or is it? Is Vivienne immune from falling in love? She fell in love with Edwin fifteen years ago, and it is quite possible that she never fell out of it. Edwin is still quite bitter. Vivienne’s Bureau stood in their way all those years ago, and he wants it destroyed. What happens when Vivienne comes to his house and becomes governess to his daughter? Edwin has secrets alongside his bitterness, and Vivienne has a mammoth-sized task ahead of her. Both Vivienne and Edwin are in desperate need of redemption. It is quite possible that their love for one another and Edwin’s child might bring them closer together. First, they must open their hearts and let go of the past. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who enjoy British, Regency and Victorian historical romance.

This book of the series took me a bit longer to settle into.
The characters didn’t seem to have the chemistry, others in the series have.
Vivian was a likeable enough character and I was looking forward to her book so I enjoyed it for that, but Edwin wasn’t really my kind of match for her.
I enjoyed his stepdaughters character, even though she was rude and bad mannered, by the end of the book you could see why and I felt for her.
I’m afraid 3 1/2 stars is the best I can do.
R up to 4 .

The last book in the Governess Series is about the “CEO” of the Governess Bureau, Vivienne Clark.

She has a past with Edwin Bysshe, 3rd in line to the Viscount title when 15 years ago, he was courting her while she was getting her Governess Bureau up an running. When he proposed, he indicated that her business wouldn’t succeed and so instead she could be his wife.

They didn’t split on good terms and when 15 years later after all the marriages within her bureau, the gossip takes over and her business is failing. One client is left and it’s Edwin Bysshe, now Viscount and he needs a governess for his 12 year old daughter.

I had a hard time believing the love between them was still alive. Edwin was so bitter and a verbal abuser towards Vivienne. She was also not a great governess or even good at holding conversations. All she did was talk back with Edwin.

Laura, the 12 year old, had almost her own side story going on with all the adopted drama.

I think Edwin was selfish, stuck up and bitter. Vivienne was also bitter, living in the past and seemed overwhelmed by everything.

Reading the first 4 books in this series she came across as a 45-60 year old cranky woman. In this book she was what? 30-35?? I don’t think it was mentioned. Edwin’s age was mentioned as 35, which was not old and I would have liked it more for him to be 38-40.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing.. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Miss Vivienne Clarke has lost all but one of her new clients as too many of her employees at the Governess Bureau have broken her rule which is to never fall in love with their employers, She has owned the business for fifteen years and doesn't want to see it ruined due to the gossip sheets, so she has to fill the last governess post herself when her last candidate quits. If she is successful, then her business has a chance to recover, but it will ruin her if it doesn't.

Viscount Bysshe and his daughter can't seem to agree on anything, not even what she calls him, so he decides to hire a governess in hopes it helps to tame his daughter. Edwin doesn't realise that he knows the would-be governess, as there is a personal history.

The author was new to me, so I haven't read any previous books in the series, but it reads perfectly well as a stand-alone and it was a delightful read!.

With her governess agency business on the line, Vivienne must turn to Edwin, her long lost love, to help her set her life to rights. Sparks fly and passions ignite in this Regency romance with more mature heroine than the your typical “chit fresh from the schoolroom.” Sensuality level: steamy

A Governess of Wise Years by Emily EK Murdoch, in the final book of the Governess Bureau, brings love to its founder, Vivienne Clarke. Vivienne is the rare businesswoman in Regency England and the Governess Bureau has been a success for 15 years. Lately, though, there have been a rash of marriages between her governesses and men of the household, aristocratic men: men who should have been above the reach of a governess. It has left the bureau with a sordid reputation. Vivienne knows she can once again make a success of the business but she needs time away; she needs time for the publicity and gossip to calm. She decides to take that time by becoming a governess to her last remaining client: Edwin, Viscount Bysshe, the man she had refused so many years earlier. Can she make a success of this posting and return to her former success? That remains to be seen.

Vivienne learns a lot in her stint as a governess. Things she should have known and warned her governesses about. Things that would have made their postings easier and more successful. It was all about the child, for her. A child that could have been hers it things had worked out better. The further Vivienne got into her job, the better she became at it. No surprise there! This was a lonely child, the child of a seemingly cold man. As she got to re-know him better, she discovered he was not cold, but unsure. He was trying to raise the child the way he had been raised, not successfully, for sure. But, he knew no other way. It was an interesting scenario and a terrific ending to a delightful series.

This book was a DNF for me. I gave it an honest chance I feel getting throught 12 chapters before giving up.
I just really didn't like Edward. He was boring and pathetic still angry about a woman turning him down so she could build a governess bureau instead. And now that it is failing because the governesses keep falling in love, Edward hire the bureau for his adopted daughter. But he wants her to fail. Why would you want the governess that is suppose to be helping your daughter to fail.
I just couldn't deal with Edward anymore.
This book just didn't work for me.

The gossips and scandal sheets have driven both clients and governesses away from the Governess Bureau. Everything Vivienne Clarke has worked for is lost. There is one client left on the books, and since she is the only governess at the bureau, she takes the job as governess to Laura Bysshe, the twelve-year-old daughter of Viscount Edwin Bysshe. Edwin and Vivienne have a history. Fifteen years ago, the Governess Bureau came between them. Edwin could not come to terms with Vivienne’s dedication to the business. Now she has come to work for him, and he plans to take his revenge by proving that she is incompetent. Edwin is possessed of a bad attitude and an unpleasant personality, and what’s worse, it seems his daughter has inherited both. Vivienne makes some progress with Laura. It even seems at times that there might be a spark between Edwin and Vivienne. Mistakes, misunderstanding, intolerance, secrets, and guilt make it unlikely they will be able to find their HEA. This is the final story for the Governess Bureau. It is a bit sad, and at times the emotion is volatile, but sometimes you must come to grips with an unhappy past to find a happy future. It is a compelling story with interesting characters. All in all a good read.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

Well it seemed the Governess Bureau was going to have to close. With the governesses sent out on assignments, that were now marrying their employer, it seemed the general judgement was incensed!

With only one assignment left, it looked like Vivienne would take it. Governess to the daughter of the man she had turned not married so she could open her business.

So years later she is to work in his house? He had become a bitter man and did not seem to have gotten much better. But as these two come together again, will they be able to find love?

The Governess Bureau is in trouble. Written in the scandal pages, just what is Miss Vivienne Clarke to do? Really is it her fault that her governesses have found true love and married the men that needed their help and hired them? Love does strange things, but society loves to gossip about any situation that raises public interest. As she ponders her situation an offer comes in and she decides to deal with it herself. The only problem is, Edwin, Viscount Bysshe is a former boyfriend that she turned down to start The Governess Bureau. His daughter, Laura needs guidance that he cannot provide. I enjoyed Laura as she tried to discover herself and how she fit into her life with the Viscount. I did not enjoy Edwin as he seemed shallow and needed to grow up and straighten himself out. Vivienne was the strong one in this relationship and took him in hand. But was it in time?

This was my first time reading a book by Emily E.K. Murdoch and it was so much fun. The series premise of governesses coming to teach children and falling in love is a trope I am guilty of loving.

Vivienne and Edwin had such a problem communicating for a large portion of the book, which was probably due to old hurts. Vivienne and Edwin had prior history together with a short lived romance that didn’t work out because again they couldn’t communicate. (Past love revisited in a book is another trope that I really love.)

I enjoyed this book quite a bit despite the lack of communication between the two main characters and would happily read another book by this author.

3.5/5 stars

A truly heart wrenching story! The agony of a love torn apart for years, only to come together older but definitely not wiser proves to be complicated beyond compare. I knew the end of the Governess Bureau would be bittersweet, but I was not prepared for how tragically heart wrenching it was. After 15 years apart, and then coming together with so many misconceptions and misunderstandings it was only natural for their reconciliation to be filled with such strife. So many times I wanted to reach through the page and smack one or the other for their sheer stupidity. So much pain could be avoided if they only learned to open up despite their fears. But that would not have made for as compelling a story. The repeated heartbreak is what made their inevitable conclusion truly beautiful, and their full understanding so astounding.

3.5 stars. A tale of second chances in life and love.

Vivienne has been running the Governess Bureau for the last 15+ years after rejecting a proposal from Edwin. He had told her she had to pick between him and her fledgling business. But now her business has become a scandal since so many governesses have married high ranked men from their assignments. So Vivienne is the only one left to cover the only assignment she has left on her books: provide a governess for Edwin's 12 year old daughter Laura and bring success to her business again. But Edwin is determined to make sure she is forced to shut down the Governess Bureau permanently. Can they find common ground?

First off, Laura is amazing and has such great personality. Vivienne and Edwin, not so much. They're both very abrasive at the beginning and also don't really grovel well at the end. However, in the middle it was interesting to see them get to know one another again. The challenges they face were also interesting. I would be curious to read the other books in the series and see how those relationships came to be.

Overall, if you enjoy historical romance stories with second chances and strong heroines, you will enjoy this book as well.
