it looks like us was such a fun, eerie read. prior to picking it up, i was fighting a two-month long reading slump and this is exactly the perfect book to combat that – it’s fast paced, it’s got fun dialogue and great characters and it doesn’t shy away from gore. at this point, i’m numbed to gross stuff, but there was a scene where i flinched a bit because the way alison ames writes gore is simply amazing. i also must point out the atmosphere of the book – i constantly got the feeling that something is wrong, even at the beginning of the story. it’s constantly eerie and unsettling. you know those horror movies set in a really small space that it also makes you as a watcher feel claustrophobic – that’s exactly how i felt reading this.

the cast of characters was quite likable, i especially adored the friendship between two of the main characters – riley and luke. each of the characters was very well developed and i never felt like they didn’t have unique personalities. the only one i wished was a bit more developed was dae. i really liked the fact that the mc is asexual and another character is gay. i love casual rep.

the story itself was intriguing and i absolutely love survival stories, so you can imagine i had such a good time with this book. i was constantly wanting to keep on reading – i finished it in a day. it’s paced really well with little turns of events here and there to keep the reader engaged until the end.

i also really liked the author’s writing style – you can definitely tell it’s their book. i’ve also started to break a covenant and i can say i love the writing in that one as well. it so easy to read and it flows so nicely. the dialogue and the interactions between the characters were so well crafted, i truly liked the banter and the jokes in this one. i also have to say some of the references in this one went over my head and i’m pretty sure i won’t be the only one considering it’s ya.

this will be very nitpicky but i wished we saw more of the monster and its backstory. it’s such an interesting antagonist considering it can do some stuff that i won’t mention since i don’t want to give spoilers, but it had so much potential and, while i don’t dislike what happened in the book, i wish we had more of it. the ending was quite abrupt as we don’t get that many answers, but i also see why it ended the way it did. maybe we’ll get a sequel?

overall, it looks like us is such an amazing read for when you want something fast and intriguing, with just the right amount of horror and gore.

It Looks Like Us is a YA horror book that follows five teenagers on a science research trip in Antartica. But there's a monster that comes out of a lake below them. The monster has the ability to impersonate and look like the other humans it infects. But the real bad guy is the one that sent them to Antartica with the intention of getting this monster to use as a weapon. I think this book was good but had a lot more potential. More could have been done with the monster and its ability to talk. What's it's backstory? This felt a lot like Venom in a way. I love that there's also asexual and gay representation, as well as anxiety representation. Tw for gore, panic attacks.

Did you read animorphs as a kid? Did you ever wish it was even scarier? Well, do I have a book for you. Think: Animorphs, Alien (1979), and Until Dawn. It Looks Like Us follows Riley on what she thinks will be a normal research trip to Antarctica to collect samples for the world’s largest tech company. Things go downhill fast. This book is chilling, unsettling, and impossible to put down. Alison Ames is incredibly good at horror and I absolutely recommend reading her books if you like fast-paced thrillers. READ THIS BOOK!!!
