A suspenseful, quick read I couldn't get to the ending quick enough! And then I was sad when it was over. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good domestic thriller!

This is thrilling. The story is told over a dual timeline. The pace is a little slower than I would like. There are some good twists. The characters are unpredictable
I did enjoy this book.

The Mother's Secret by Kathryn Croft appealed to me with its tantalizing premise, though I ultimately felt let down by a cast of characters and a plotline that failed to completely engage me. That being said, it is a twisty domestic drama that will certainly keep you turning the pages.

Eve has always longed for a child of her own. After numerous miscarriages, she finally carries a baby to term, but then abandons her husband and three month old daughter. What is at the root of Eve's willingness to leave her baby? From the very start, we realize that there is much more to this story than it would initially appear.

I found this to be a slow burn and not quite as gripping as I had hoped. I suspect that I am an outlier here, though, and fans of Ms Croft will enjoy this one. 3.5 stars

Many thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an ARC.

The Mother’s Secret

Kathryn Croft’s book, The Mother’s Secret is an alluring psychological thriller that kept me entertained from start to finish. This is the second book I’ve read by Kathryn Croft and can say that I’ve officially found a new favourite author. I absolutely love her writing style, level of intensity and all the twists and turns and curveballs she threw in. Such an adrenaline rush reading The Mother’s Secret. Definitely a 5 ⭐️ read.

Married couple Eve and Aidan have been trying to get pregnant for years. After numerous miscarriages Eve finally becomes pregnant. She should be happy, but after the birth of her baby daughter, Eve is having a hard time adjusting to motherhood. In fact it has been a nightmare for her. Eve’s struggles with motherhood are compounded by a terrible secret that she has been hiding. Shes been covering up a crime that no one knows happened. Finally reaching her breaking point Eve runs away. In the middle of the night she just walks away from her husband and new baby, leaving her secrets and lies behind. However, two years later, Eve goes back to face her mistakes from the past and try to be the parent she knows she can be. But will Aiden allow her back in? Will her horrible secrets come to light and shatter her hopes of reconciling with her daughter? You’ll just have to read the book and find out it!

Thank you to NetGalley, Canelo and Kathryn Croft for my e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

Favourite quote from The Mother’s Secret. “I’m a survivor not a victim, a phoenix rising from the ashes”.

I thought this book was okay.
It was a fun and easy read. At the same time I thought it was slow at times and it was a bit predictable.

What a book! The story is divided in two parts, both with dual timelines, a before and an after. I found the first part quite slow and repetitive. Eve, the main character, had a secret, she kept mentioning this secret being something unspeakable, something monstrous, but she kept teasing the reader with it and I started losing patience over it.
I was about to DNF the book, but then I got to the end of Part 1 and a massive plot twist that made me keep reading.
Part 2 was definitely better than the first part, more secrets, more revelations and more twists. Some elements were probably a bit rushed, i would have liked to know a little more about what happened to some of the characters.

WARNINGS: rape, abuse, mental manipulation, abortion and miscarriage.

This story has a dual timeline, even though it moves at a slow pace. I really enjoyed it. This book had my attention from the first page to the last page. Filled with twists and turns the whole way through .

Two years ago, Eve walked away from her husband and newborn baby.. Now, she's living as if neither of them exists...at least until she changes her mind and decides to contact her daughter again. The chapters alternate between "before" and "now", all told from Eve's point of view. Even after I started to understand why she walked away from her family and to sympathize with her circumstances, I couldn't warm up to Eve or find much to like about her. Once the plot started to twist, I enjoyed the story even less. It just wasn't for me.

AMAZING! this book just kept on giving! It was great all the way though but the ending was something else! No-one could have guessed what would happen, all the way through i did find it rather strange that the child was only 30 minutes away on the train in Henley and hadn't been seen in 3 months, really small detail but important

The Mother’s Secret by Kathryn Croft is out now! I have always really enjoyed Kathryn’s books! She is a great suspense writer and focuses on a couple named Eve and Aidan who are desperate to start their family. But when Eve finally has a daughter, she runs away and pretends as if the never had a baby. WHY? What is she running from? What secret is Eve carrying? Or is she just a horrible person?

Synopsis:

Eve wanted nothing more than to be a mother. She and her husband, Aidan, planned to have a family, but with each devastating miscarriage her hopes dwindled. When she eventually gave birth to her daughter, Kayla, it should have been the happiest time of her life. Instead, it was a waking nightmare for Eve, and one she was desperate to escape.

Now, Eve has left all that behind. She pretends that she never had a child, and keeps her secrets close. But someone knows the truth. They know that Eve told a lie, and the clock is ticking before her shocking decision is revealed. Once the story comes out, there’ll be no way out for Eve. If people learn about the crime she covered up, they’ll never look at her the same way again. She must get her little girl back, before it’s too late. If she can’t, running away won’t be an option. This time, Eve will face the consequences, and pay the price she should have paid years ago…

Eve wanted nothing more than to be a mother. However, their journey to parenthood was stymied by multiple miscarriages. After successfully giving birth to her daughter, Eve should have been happy. Instead, she ended up leaving Kayla in the care of Aiden. Eve started a new life, leaving everything and everyone behind. Eventually, Eve wants to regain a relationship with Kayla however, someone is intent on ensuring that that does not occur. This novel was suspenseful and difficult to put down. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I've read several of this author's books before, so I was really pleased to be accepted to read and review this one.

I was able to get straight into the story, and found the narrative flowed well and was easy to read.
However I did find it a little repetitive and slow. I think the plot didn't quite have the pull to entice me to read every day, so it did take me a few weeks to finish the book.

The twist was a complete surprise, partly because it didn't seem to quite tally up with the build up throughout the story.

Having said all that, I did enjoy the book, and I will look forward to the author's next one!

A good easy read that won’t have your brain cells aching from keeping up with the plot. A great beach read which whilst fairly predictable held my interest.
