This is the 4th book in Barbara Carter's set of memories. I haven't read the previous 3 books but that didn't take away anything from this book. Although I do want to go back and read them.
During this period of her life, she grapples with finding a man to love her. One that doesn't use her for sex, drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. All these bad decisions weigh heavily on her, get she keeps the cycle going.
