If there's anyone I can count on for a five-star thriller over the years, it's John Sandford. His Prey series always brings compelling characters, heart-pounding suspense, and, as here, a classically well-plotted mystery. A master of the genre, Sanford delivers here as ever, and even if you haven't read any of the Prey books before, this book is a good place to start. Five stars!

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers team up to go after a group that calls themselves the “five” Really they are vigilantes and go after rapes and murders but even they have gotten out of control and you cannot let anyone think that they are above justice. A lot of little undertones in this story but everything works and it is another good book and very much worth the read. Liked the characters and the story.

Righteous Prey

Lucas Davenport #32

When a group called the 5 starts killing in well to do circles. Davenport and Flowers team up to help the FBI. This time the killing group is putting out press releases before the bodies have even been found.
When the 3rd body is found in Minnetonka, Lucas and Virgil know it’s time to get involved.
Virgil is hard at work on his book series as well as being a dad to twins. But with the case so close to home he doesn’t have a choice. The question becomes can they stop the killers before more bodies drop?

John Sandford is one of my favorite series writers. I love the backstory he relies on from past books. The guys' family subplots are always a nice touch too!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

The Prey series by John Sandford is one of my favorite series of all time, 32 books later and I loved it! I love Lucas and Virgil working together. This book has it all, an interesting case to solve, plenty of action and the humor that I've come to expect and love. I hope this series continues for a long time because I'm already ready for the next one

Can't go wrong with Sandford! All of the Prey series are well worth a mystery/thriller reader's time!
If you are familiar with them, you know. If not, do yourself a favor and pick one up.
Thanks to the publishers for the opportunity to access the ARC.

Bitcoin billionaires, pre Bankman-Fried high profile case, and these five are killas! The new white-collar criminals for Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. It's written in the formula style of John Sanford and fast paced as usual. Not high level reading, but as always keeps you on your feet, hence why the 3 stars. Thank you NetGalley for the ACR.

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers team up against The Five, a powerful vigilante group who have the money and resources, as well as the desire, to kill those they feel are unworthy across the country. When the group strikes in the Twin Cities, Lucas and Virgil work with the FBI and local law enforcement to track and apprehend the vicious killers. Against powerful foes with nothing to lose, will law enforcement be able to gain the upper hand?

The Prey series, as well as the separate Virgil Flowers' books, are always formulaic with little extra character development. Righteous Prey is also very repetitive, with the suspects seemingly getting the jump on law enforcement at every turn. There is nothing new here, with Davenport and Flowers investigating and putting themselves into the line of fire.

Overall, I was not really a fan of this novel. The entire book reminded me of a thriller movie - all flash and not a lot of substance. There was a bit of police work, but mainly the action sequences took over the plot. Having read all of the other books in the series, I was not that impressed by Righteous Prey.

Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this novel was entirely my own.

John Sandford is a true master of crime writing, one of the few in the genre who can write a propulsive, methodical "investigative" thriller while also being funny & dark & gripping & humane in equal measure. He is also one of very few authors whose series novels get better w/each new tale, rather than increasingly tired & formulaic. His authorial voice & his characters have evolved, much the same way Ed McBain's did over the course of all those 87th Precinct novels.

John Sanford never disappoints. Action packed and wow, what an ending! Five bitcoin billionaires, vowed to murder five horribly awful people of their choosing. The donations for these murders are to go towards a worthy cause.

I'm all caught up with this series. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my reviews since I need to catch up.

Anyway, I was so happy with being able to read/listen to Righteous Prey.

In this installment, Lucas deals with bitcoin billionaires who have created a group called the Five. This group is targeting individuals to kill them and later on they brag about it.

Thankfully, Lucas is not alone, he has Virgil Flowers with him. I haven't read Virgil's series but he has been in enough of the Prey series, that I already know I like him.

As always there is a sense of urgency to stop them before one more dead body is found while still delivering good humor and an interesting resolution.

If I have one complaint it will be politics getting more pages in this book than priors. As a rule, I don't like politics in my fiction. There is already enough of it on the news, social media, etc.

Cliffhanger: No

4/5 Fangs

I have been reading this author's books for many, many years and have enjoyed earch one but this is my favorite yet. I never hesitate to pick up this author's books as I know what I am in for when I do. They are hard to put down and full of action. This book is no different. This is a well written story where the author used details to bring it to life on each page. The characters are relateable and brought alot to this story. The twists and turns had me turning pages fast just to see what would happen next. A story that is full of suspense and mystery. A story that has great growth throughout which made the story easy and entertaining to read. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

Righteous Prey is a quick-paced, action-packed novel was great. I adored seeing Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers together once again in the same book. I highly recommend this book. Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for this advanced copy.

John Sandford"s Righteous Prey started out at a slow simmer and gradually turned up the heat until the jaw dropping ending.
At first, I was a little put off not being a big Virgil Flowers fan I was a little discouraged by how much of the Prey book he was taking up, but he is growing on me especially his interaction with Lucas Davenport. The pair seek to stop a group of killers targeting people they deem unfit to live, or as the description says--
“We’re going to murder people who need to be murdered.”
So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure."
The ending is jaw dropping and unexpected.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #PenguinGroup, and John Sandford for the ARC of #RighteousPrey.

lucas and Virgil are roped i to helping the FBI find whoever is killing random people. "The Five" are bitcoin billionaires who have decided to take out less worthy people who are ruining the country. As always, Virgil is a delight and makes me laugh, however Lucas is now starting to get on my nerves. Time to retire???

Another great addition to the series! This one was exciting, lives up to the thriller category. It also had elements of a classic puzzle mystery. I have to love the team of Flowers and Davenport together, and their dedication to basic detective work. Well done, looking forward to the next installment.

I thought that John had made Lucas and :That Effing Flowers" look weak, I would had loved for them to of had more action in the story line, and It would be great to see a few more old names join Lucas as well in the crime fighting stories, I look forward to his next book and hope it gets better, Letty and Lucas and Virgal would work nice together. The book was a nice read, but it was John's better writing.

Oh my, Davenport and Flowers back together again!
This time hunting for members of THE FIVE, a group of BitCoin billionaires. These Five have decided that a cure for their collective boredom is to hunt people that they consider to be losers…, people who should no longer populate the planet.
Davenport and Flowers chase them across the country, along with the FBI.
Easy to read and with enough plot and action to keep you interested. Highly recommend.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me this ARC

Another awesome effort by Sanford. I absolutely love these Prey novels. I love Davenport and Flowers as the dynamic duo.

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers get to work together as they join a team of federal and local investigators seeking to find the mysterious "Five" who proclaim on Facebook they are committed to murdering isolated people who deserve to die - child pornographers, corrupt politicians, gun manufacturers, and so on.

Davenport and Flowers figure out quite a few small but important details as they focus on the local crime scene and eventually follow the killer(s) across the US. In parallel action, the reader follows members of the "Five" as they cope with the steady and increasing attention of several levels of law enforcement.
I really enjoyed this book!
