I was not impressed with this book at all. The writing wasn’t the best and the heroine drove me up a wall with her stupidity. The new cover is pretty and all but that’s about it.

It has been a long time since I first read this book. I always liked the Murrays and enjoyed getting reacquainted with these stories. If you like historical books set in Scotland, you will definitely enjoy this one.

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think longtime fans of this author would have been more invested in this story! I found it interesting, but I eventually felt a bit bored and could not finish it. I liked the concept a lot, but ultimately it wasn’t for me.

Mostly enjoyed this book even if I thought it was a bit long. It felt boring at times, yet it was good. I enjoyed myself while I was reading it.

It was an okay story. Very slow-paced. Inconsistencies with the spelling of DeVeau(x) and other misspellings which I found distracting. I wasn't getting a romantic feel between the characters. It was hard to stay engaged in the story.

Nigel Murray has been in France for seven years not only fighting for the French king, but also fighting his own personal battles, the reasons why he left his family and Scotland. He had almost made the decision to face his demons and return home when he came across Guy Lucette and his cousin, Gisele DeVeaux. Curious as to why she is trying to look like a lad and not succeeding, he soon joins them. Gisele, accused of murdering her cruel husband, has been on the run for a year trying to stay ahead of his family and those they have hired to kill her. When Guy is wounded Nigel takes over trying to get her to safety. Of course, they head to Scotland. Nigel and Gisele are well suited for each other. It just takes them a while to realize it. Both are intelligent, but their stubbornness sometimes covers it up, loyal, and when they give they give their all. Although Nigel was willing to fight and possibly die for Gisele, it took a long time for him to decide her innocence. Also his past confused his feelings for her so rather than say anything to her, he ran the risk of losing her. Gisele, for her part, was not so clear thinking either. Three times she left safety to strike out on her own for reasons she thought were pure, but only got her in trouble time and time again. This was not a new Murray offering, but one of the first in the series. However, these books are so good they are just as enjoyable to read if it is the first, second or even third time around!

3.5 Stars! I loved the first half of this book. After that, eh. This is the 2nd book in the ‘Murray Family’ series. The book got me so invested in the heroic male main character, Nigel, & the spitfire, brave female main character, Giselle. She did things that made me want to roll my eyes and yell at her. He did, and didn’t do, things that made me want to yell at him and slap him around a bit. For such a brave and heroic couple, they were also weenies in other ways. Still a really good book. I didn’t care for the ending - Too abrupt. It was a long, drawn out book and then it was all wrapped up in a heartbeat!

Nigel has grown tired of fighting battles and is ready to return back home to Scotland. While he is making this deacon he sees a man and a woman talking and decides it would be worth spying on to know what is going on. Gisele has been on the run for a year and she is growing tired of trying to constantly hide to stay alive. She has enlisted help from her cousin, Guy, who is currently a solider fighting in France. Gisele has decided she would dress like a page, by wearing boy clothes and cutting off her beautiful long hair. In the process of her doing so Nigel spies on them and over hears why she is disguising herself as a page. He has an interest in Gisele and is willing to help her and fight to save her life. They are trying to flee France and reach his family’s holding back home but will they make it without being discovered? I was given an ARC, through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Hannah Howell is one of my favorite authors but this was not my favorite of her books. There was too much fighting between the two of them and with the danger she was in could not understand why she kept running away
