I’m new to the Bones series, and In have no idea why it’s taken me so long to discover it. Fans of Patricia Cornwell and similar authors will feel right at home sinking their teeth into this series. Personally, I need to read a series from the beginning, so I wasn’t able to finish this. I can’t wait to start the series from book one.

Full Disclosure: I received an advanced reader's copy of Cold, Cold Bones, the 21st book in the Temperance Brennan series, by Kathy Reichs from Scribner via NetGalley.

If you were going to start the series anywhere else but at the beginning, I would say this is a good place for it. For one, I think the books just keep getting better and better. But also, this storyline pulls in many old cases so you'd get some background without having to do all the reading if you don't want to make a 21 book investment.

With these books, I don't like to give much plot away. We finally get more time with Katy, Tempe's daughter. There's going to be a lot to unpack there in the future. It is also a great opportunity to bring awareness to the struggles of returning veterans. I appreciate that Tempe's approach to the whole situation isn't perfect from the get-go, but she learns from her mistakes as we all should.

Bonus points: As always, for Birdie. I don't know how the science will manage it, but I need Birdie to always be. Now that I know Birdie's TV and movie preferences, I feel attached more than ever.

Thank you Kathy Reichs, Schribner and NetGallery for my aARC and a chance to write an honest review in return for receiving the eARC.

This is the 21st book in the Temperance Brown series, though it is my first to read. I enjoyed it a lot. Cold, Cold Bones has it all, romance, thriller and gore.

I wasn't sure what to expect but this book had me captivated from the beginning. I fell for a few of the red herrings but others I got right away.

If the the thriller gore genre is for you, I would highly suggest reading this book.

Kathy Reichs has a wonderful character in Temperance Brennan. She is smart, flawed, caring, and complex. In this terrific addition to the series, Temperance is being sent clues to former cases that are freaking her out so she enlists the help of an old friend, a retired police detective, and her beau, a retired Montreal policeman now a private detective.. As she tries to find who is stalking her with these macabre clues, she also must deal with a missing adult daughter and a winter storm. This author is a master at suspense and mystery.

If my eyes hadn't failed me, I would have finished this in a day. This plot was intense. The characters, constant movement, the plot just had me obsessed.
Tempe receives a strange delivery - an eyeball, wrapped nicely in a box, left on her back deck.
The body is discovered the following day - in a school's abandoned outhouse.
With the help of Skinny and some contacts, Tempe realizes the killer is copying her old cases.
Meanwhile, Katy hasn't responded or texted in days. Tempe tries to keep it together while the bodies pile up and her fear for Katy heightens.
Highly recommend.

Cold, Cold Bones by Kathy Reichs is a mesmerizing story about a forensic anthropologist: a coroner who dissects bodies that have been discovered months or years after death, rather than fairly recently. Sometimes it can be hundreds of years, although not in this case. Temperance (Tempe) is a woman old enough to have a daughter, Katy, who has served two tours in the middle east. She is divorced but has a permanent relationship with Ryan, a retired police officer who is now a private detective in two countries: Canada and the US, and travels to more. His partner here in North Carolina is another retired police officer, “Skinny” Slidell, who Tempe calls upon regularly. The story starts with a package that is delivered to Tempe’s home anonymously. When it is opened, she and Katy discover a human eye. After the package is knocked to the floor accidentally, they discover there are small numbers carved into the eye: latitude and longitude. Upon traveling with Skinny to the site, it turns out it is an outhouse holding a human head in a Target bag. The head is not nearly in the pristine condition of the eye. Thus starts a rampage which it finally becomes apparent are reenactments of some of Tempe’s cases. For what purpose?

Tempe is a terrific character. Brilliant, intuitive, and well-liked, she is a credit to her profession. Someone has taken issue with that assessment. Why? Along the way we meet some odd characters: the survivalist with a hear of gold, several homeless veterans, and Katy, Tempe’s daughter, who Tempe is fairly certain is suffering from PTSD. The solution comes, almost by accident, and is shocking in its intensity. It is intuition and cleverness rather than police work, although that plays a part. After living through a huge blizzard, an oddity for North Carolina, everyone concerned is happy for spring to arrive. In more ways than one. Good read.

This was a quick break. Certainly very enjoyable, but was a bit predictable. I did enjoy the characters and the writing style. I feel like if I had read more of the author’s works, that this book would’ve flowed better for me. In the end, I was glad I read it because it was interesting.

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and to Netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Pub date: 7/5/22
Genre: crime fiction, thriller
Series: Temperance Brennan, book 21
In one sentence: A criminal starts copying Tempe's past cases, and she'll have to figure out who it is before they get their hands on her daughter Katy.

This book started a little slow for me, but it picked up around the halfway point. The "copycat" crimes plotline was interesting, and I loved the red herrings that Kathy Reichs sprinkled into the story. I also did not guess the ending, which always gets bonus points. I liked that Katy was a main part of the storyline - it made the stakes higher for Brennan.

This book met my expectations for a Temperance Brennan thriller, and if you like the series, this is another good addition.

Another great Temperance Brennan book! Fast paced and entertaining as always. Being reminded of previous cases makes me want to go back and start the series all over again! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Cold, Cold Bones by Kathy Reichs in exchange for an honest review. It has been awhile since I have read a Kathy Reichs book, but I have always enjoyed the science and accuracy in the books, so I requested this book. Even though I have missed the last few books, I was able to pick this book up and dive right in. However, it did make me want to read the whole series and then reread this book again. There also happened to be a Bones marathon on, which I haven't watched in years, and so I was watching that and reading this book. I'm glad they are different enough that it wasn't confusing. I really enjoyed this new book and am looking forward to restarting the series.

This is the 21st book of the series and even though I am behind on reading the series, I still enjoyed it. As I already knew the characters and who they are. The series, Bones on TV , is based loosley on this series.
Temperance Brennan gets an eyeball , in a box, on her back porch. Who would do this and whose eye is it? Upon looking at it more Tempe's daughter, Katy, notices letters and numbers on the eyeball. More things keep happening that looks like there is a copycat killer on the loose.
Then Katy disappears and won't answer her phone. It becomes suspicious when Tempe gets a short message from Katy that she doesn't believe Katy sent it.
Seems like Tempe and a retired detective, Sledell, keep running against brick walls trying to figure out who is doing the copycats and why?
Tempe's concern for her daughter has them wondering what the hell is going on and is she safe or not?
Thanks to NetGalley and Scribner fr the book to review.

Temperance Brennan is back with the same witty dialogue, great characters, and well researched police procedures. This is the 21st book in the series and I imagine it is difficult to keep the stories fresh. This one took a different perspective than some of the past books by including a lot of previously solved cases. I enjoyed the book even though I found it easy to guess the culprit. Strongly recommended for fans of Kathy Reichs.

Thanks to NetGalley and Scribner for an advanced reader copy.

If you are a fan of Kathy Reichs' books, you will not be disappointed. What I love most about them is that while they should be read in order, they don't really have to be, unless a criminal or victim from the past, because the author quickly fills you in.

The book is no better or worse than any of the previous books. You know what you're getting when you read her books. Some funny lines, a little romance, some gory details, a few red herrings, and a solid, entertaining read, just like the last one and the forthcoming one.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review this book.

Cold, Cold Bones, the newest addition to the Temperance Brennan series, was not as compelling a read as I had hoped it would be. Although it was nice to return to familiar characters, it fell short of my expectations.

It is wonderful to be in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Temperance Brennan. I think my biggest problem with Cold Cold Bones is that I kept thinking about the TV show and comparing it to the book.

In case you haven’t met Temperance Brennan before, she is a forensic anthropologist, consulting with medical examiners and coroners on difficult cases, determining the cause of death. Her significant other, Andrew Ryan, is a retired Quebec homicide police officer, now trained as a private investigator. Tempe’s daughter is back from a tour in Afghanistan and moving into a new home.

I am not very excited. Granted, Cold Cold Bones comes across as a police procedural with a bit of danger, but when Tempe went to the steel plant…well, I was disappointed. Enough said. You want to know why I felt that? Read it yourself.

Compared to some of Kathy Reich’s novels, I am a bit disappointed. I will tell you I have missed some of the books in the series, so maybe it affected me while reading Cold Cold Bones. And…after watching so many of the TV shows, well, that presents its own problems, comparing everything.

No matter that Cold Cold Bones was not one of my favorite novels by Kathy Reichs, It won’t stop me from reading more of her work.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Cold Cold Bones by Kathy Reichs.

Title: Cold, Cold Bones
Author: Kathy Reichs
Genre: Thriller
Rating: 3 out of 5

Winter has come to North Carolina and, with it, a drop in crime. Freed from a heavy work schedule, Tempe Brennan is content to dote on her daughter Katy, finally returned to civilian life from the army. But when mother and daughter meet at Tempe’s place one night, they find a box on the back porch. Inside: a very fresh human eyeball.

GPS coordinates etched into the eyeball lead to a Benedictine monastery where an equally macabre discovery awaits. Soon after, Tempe examines a mummified corpse in a state park, and her anxiety deepens.

There seems to be no pattern to the subsequent killings uncovered, except that each mimics in some way a homicide that a younger Tempe had been called in to analyze. Who or what is targeting her, and why?

Helping Tempe search for answers is detective Erskine “Skinny” Slidell, retired but still volunteering with the CMPD cold case unit—and still displaying his gallows humor. Also pulled into the mystery: Andrew Ryan, Tempe’s Montreal-based beau, now working as a private detective.

Could this elaborately staged skein of mayhem be the prelude to a twist that is even more shocking? Tempe is at a loss to establish the motive for what is going on…and then her daughter disappears.

At its core, Cold, Cold Bones is a novel of revenge—one in which revisiting the past may prove the only way to unravel the present.

I’ve read some of the other Brennan books and I enjoyed them, but I barely made myself finish this one. Tempe kept doing stupid stuff, frankly, and that wasn’t very believable for me, knowing this character. Oh, I know a serial copycat killer is after me and someone just busted my window in the middle of the night, but I’m going outside to see if someone is out there…No. This just did not work for me. A character that’s supposed to be smart making repeatedly dumb moves just sours the entire book for me.

Kathy Reichs is a bestselling author. Cold Cold Bones is her newest novel.

Cold, Cold Bones is another wonderful book by Kathy Reichs. I love them all! This one is the Temperance Brennan book # 21 in the series. The story starts out with Tempe and her daughter finding a human eyeball in a box by the door. There are so many twists and turns, a little humor and a few bodies and bones. Once I start reading them, I can’t put the book down. I have not read all of the books, but I don’t feel like I get left behind. Maybe since I have watched every episode of Bones ever made. Looking forward to next book and catching up on a few I missed.

Thank you NetGalley and Scribner publishing for the opportunity to review Cold, Cold Bones

Cold, Cold Bones by Kathy Reichs was outstanding! After having just binged watched the Bones TV series, I wanted more! This book made me feel like I was back in the series and I loved every minute of it. I found the case in this story to be very interesting, and very intense. This was the first book I read by Kathy Reichs in this series and I will be going back to read them all now! Hopefully there are more as I don't want this to end!

Believe it or not, I've actually never read a Temperance Brennan novel!! This is #21 in the series, and it was a solid read for me. I enjoyed it - it wasn't the best suspense/mystery I've read, but it was entertaining and piqued my interest in the 20 books that have come before (and all the ones that will come after). Thank you Negalley for the ARC!

4/5 stars - if you ask me, I'll tell you to read it

This is another great book in the Temperance Brennan series. Being the 21st book in the series, there weren't many surprises in what you are getting in terms of writing style for the book. As for plot, there are some great throwbacks in the book. The book starts with a case that happens to remind Temperance of a previous case. She can't quite figure out the connection, but just knows that something is telling her that they are connected. The twists and turns as the story continues and those connections are explored kept me interested.

While you could probably jump into the series at this point as characters are briefly given background for new readers, I would recommend starting at the beginning to really she how the characters develop and to get a deeper understanding of the characters back stories.
