I found this book very interesting and enjoyable. It is very successful in setting up a seedy, dangerous, dark vibe, very noir. There's not much science, space flight just happens, gravity just exists and is unremarkable, the technology and construction involved in colonizing planets very much in the background. This book is more about the frayed and unraveling societies existing long after the groundbreaking. Vince is a likeable protagonist, reluctant to accept any help and stubbornly plowing his way directly into the path of greatest danger with every decision, but seeming to have his values in the right place. The plot is pretty simple, with a pretty over-the-top evil villain in the end, but it all comes together tidily without cliffhangers or unsatisfying unfinished business.

Loved it! It's a classic noir detective in space with a hint of horror. Genre-wise, Vassa absolutely nailed the main character and the dialogue. I hope this is the first in a series.

The premise of this book is great - a PI with a shady past, a new drug hitting the market, and an inter-planetary system all falling victim to the Black Death. But the writing is somewhat redundant, and there are many instances where the chapters could have been condensed in the editing process. Overall a fun sci-fi read, giving off Altered Carbon by Harlan Coban vibes, with a mysterious novel plot thrown in the mix.

A futuristic Sam Spade novel with Sturgis as the private detective. He finds a death called the Black Death and everyone wants him off the case.
