I love me a giant growly Scotsman, so this was right up my alley. Do I wish the spicy scenes were longer? Yes. Do I love Instalove? Meh. But it sorta worked here. It was a quick read and I enjoyed it for what it was.

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the relationship dynamic between the two main characters. It was fun and endearing to watch them spar and then get to know each other more deeply. The only thing keeping me from fully loving this book was that the action scenes seemed to resolve in just a paragraph or two. It seemed forced and unrealistic. Overall I would recommend this book and do plan on picking up more by this author in the future.

A Scottish, Viking, Romantic Adventure

They were two warriors who met on the battlefield. They would have killed one another, but when Thorburn captured Adellis and found out she was a woman, instead of killing her, he captured her. Thorburn had never kept prisoners in the past. This started an adventure that kept me turning the pages. Thorburn was unlike any warrior she ever knew, and if Adellis was to be captured, he was just the right man to do the capturing. What was Adellis’s story, and how did she manage to steal the Scottish warrior’s heart? They were enemies. Did they stand a chance? He was an honorable warrior; she was a desperate woman, needing to escape an impossible position. I enjoyed this first book in series and look forward to reading the rest of the stories. I recommend this tale to those who like Scottish historical romantic adventures with a Viking bent.

Thorburn MacDougall is a fierce Highland warrior that takes no prisoners. In a battle against Norwegian forces, he fights against a warrior that meets him at every turn, but when he finally gains advantage and rips off his helm to deliver a killing blow, he's shocked to discover its a woman. He and his brothers have vowed never to hurt women and children, but what can he do with this fierce fighter other than claim her as his own.
Adellis Bjornsdotter has lived a life of abuse at the hands of her father and brother, and now they're determined to marry her to a powerful ally that's known torturing and killing his wives. She needs to be taken prisoner and given Safe passage to Scotland. She never expected to feel protected and even loved by her conquering warrior.
I loved that the MC in this book was a strong warrior in her own right, refusing to be the pampered and coddled woman left at camp. The story progressed way too fast though and there was no room for romance, though a lot of steamy scenes. I thought the book could have benefited being a little longer. It was good enough to make me want to finish the series.
I received an advance reader copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.

This Medieval Scottish romance was a great read. The characters were likable and the story well-written and enjoyable. Loved this book.

A quick historical read with a brutal yet cute-ish story and the relationship between two warriors.

It's a good thing I've broadened my historical romance reading beyond regency and victorian.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I believe the romance did not develop sufficiently throughout the story, even though the fact that I enjoyed their companionship.

Overall, this is a good read; the plot was satisfactory, and the characters were engaging. I'm sure I'll read the next one.

As a romantic at heart reviewer, I have a mind of my own and feel compelled to always use it, folks. So here goes ... Something early on took place between Thor and Adellis, the main couple, that did not set well with me. It irritated me so much I had to fight off an overwhelming urge to stop reading in silent protest right then and there. To be honest, I'm still obviously harboring resentment. You see, I did not think the inappropriate, uncalled for graphic smexcapade (shortly after meeting/while still complete enemy strangers, adversaries) should have been thrown in, especially considering the circumstances. It felt lecherous and wrong on both their parts. We are to believe it was uncharacteristic for him, but, well, not so much for her. Her sad past was meant to justify it, but for me, it did the opposite. I exploited her further, IMO.

I'm all for strong, resilient heroines who can protect themselves. It was cool she had not just fighting skills but a brain to boot regarding healing, etc. Despite being a warrior like princess, Adellis was more like a damsel in distress on the run and in serious need of help. Thor, her unlikely hero, did soon become protective of her and fall for her in a verra big way. I just can't say I was comfortable with how it all started off. For quite some time, the lack of established emotional connection had me cringing when they even touched. I guess you could say the cart was put before the horse here in establishing a relationship.

Of course, I'm glad they eventually prevailed and bonded on all levels. Bad guy got what he deserved, naturally, and they got their HEA.

I've read and enjoyed at least five other books by this author. Time will tell if this "fly in the soup" element was a fluke or if something similar will surface again. Regardless, that mind of my own I just referenced will be sharing it with you once again, my fellow romance book loving friends.

Title: A Scot of Her Own, Series: Once Upon a Scot (Book 1), Author: Maeve Greyson, Pages: 142, stand-alone but part of series, alpha warrior leader hero, warrior skills but damsel in distress heroine, definitely non-virgin main couple, some graphic smex scenes, have smex while still strangers/enemies, nudity scenes, opposite sides but 1 same enemy.

Book 2 - A Scot to Have & To Hold (Ross & Elise)
Book 3 - A Scot to Love & Protect

This is the first book in an amazing new series by Maeve Greyson. Maeve writes wonderful highland stories and is one of my favorite authors.
The book contains it all - secrets, mistrust, traitors, passion, intrigue, and great characters. Adellis has an evil twin she would like to escape from. Thorn and Adellis find they start out as enemies, but it turns to love! There is great chemistry between the two of them.
I am looking forward to reading Maeve's next book in this series which is due out May 24th. I highly recommend this story for your enjoyment.

This was a book I would not usually reach for - and left me very pleasantly surprised! It’s very over the top both in the romance and in the battling, but it was well written, fun, gory, steamy, all in one. Adellis was strong physically and in will, Thorburn was sweet while also being a powerful leader. This was a quick read and if anything it could have done with being a bit longer. Can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

Thor and his men are attacked by Norwegians. Thor soon discovers the enemy is a woman. He takes her prisoner as his spoils of war. The characters are very captivating. They are both drawn to one another. I loved this story.

Thorburn MacDougall, commander of the Lord of Argyll’s army is lured into the forest where he overpowers the Norwegian warrior. To his surprise when he jerks the helmet off to deliver the killing blow he discovers a blue-eyed beauty the fiery fighting spirit and fury in her soul trying to kill him. Taking her prisoner and his spoils of war. A captivating story you can feel the attraction between them, can and will they begin to trust each other? He’s different than she expected he’s caring and protective, will she open her heart and tell her story? I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent book.

The Plot
I didn’t feel much romance between Adellis and Thornton, but, without a doubt, I believed their love and relationship. There was sex, but, what it lacked in romance, it made up for in lust! And there was protection and compassion, but not a lot of wooing. So I’m not sure how she did it, but I devoured this book and believed all of it! The action and adventure were perfectly excited and keep me glued to the page. There were twists I didn’t see coming but none I balked at for ‘trying to hard’. This is my first by Ms. Greyson and I’m eager to grab some of her other books.

The Heroine
Adellis is a kick-ass Warrior and has been to hell and back at the hands of her father and her brother. The only way she can escape them is to allow herself to be taken prisoner by the Scottish. It’s a great plan to get her into Scotland and her freedom, but one look at her Scottish Bear and one night of his kindness and protection (which she has never had a man do) and she can’t imagine leaving him. I loved Adellis; she was a breath of fresh air and a nice change from the usual heroines. She didn’t necessarily need rescuing or protection but she allowed Thornton to do both and enjoyed it!

The Hero
Thornburn is a tough Scottish Warrior who plans on never marrying or doing anything other than fighting for Lord Argyll. But taking Adellis prisoner on the battlefield will change all that. He is not like most Scottish Warriors; he has more honor and compassion, refusing to steal or harm women and children. He treats those he fights with, his brothers and his fellow soldiers, with honor and values each of them.

The Steam
There were a couple of scenes but not too graphic or even romantic matter of fact.

Tropes
Medieval Era, Low Steam, Historical Romance, Scotland Romance, Gamma Hero, Highland Warrior, Knife-Wielding Heroine, Experienced Heroine, Suspense/Danger, Enemies to Lovers

A great start to a new series. Maeve Greyson writes a highlander like no other. Few can match a highland warrior but a fierce Norwegian warrior who happens to be a woman, just might be the match Thorburn MacDougall didn’t know he was looking for. Though he does not believe in prisoners of war, he can’t help but take her. The fast attraction of these two is intense and wonderfully written. As is the ensuing battles to keep them together. Despite the fierce strength of Adellis Bjornsdottir, it is beautiful to see her accept Thor’s protection, strength and love. Creating a true partnership between them. Fighting side by side, protecting one another. The love story is strong, but so are the epic battles waged to win that love. The ending scene sets up the next book to perfection making you eager for the the continuation of this Highland family’s story. Can’t wait to see what is in store for Thor’s womanizing brother Ross.

A fast-moving Highland romance that has all the elements of a great love story, this novel had me enthralled from the opening pages. Thorburn and his men come under attack and they respond with deadly efficiency. That is until Thor finds himself face to face with a warrior that outwits him at every turn even if it means employing deadly tactics. Gaining the advantage and subduing his captive, Thor goes in for the kill, but his hand is stayed when he discovers that the warrior he is holding down is no man, but a beautiful woman with fury in her eyes. Thor has his own injuries to contend with but as he observes his hostage he finds his interest piqued at the vulnerability that lies beneath her facade and her willingness to give aid when he needs it most. At the same time, Thor is not at all like the warrior she believed he would be but rather is considerate, kind, and generous. Unfortunately, Adellis has her own enemies, and making an escape from their clutches is not as easy as she thought it would be. Together they overcome and the novel does come to a very successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

In medieval Scotland, Thor and his men are attacked by Norwegians. Lured by a warrior into the forest, the battle ends when he discovers the warrior is a woman. Intrigued he takes her prisoner, something he doesn't normally do. Adellis has reasons to be in Scotland. It may be possible this warrior would help her gain her freedom. Seduction is her weapon, but love will be the key to win the warrior's heart. Her vile brother, her twin, isn't done with her yet. Between the warrior she is and the bear she loves, fate may be on her side.
A short novella with romance between battle scarred warriors. Heat level 3.

A Scot of her own is a short Historical Romance that has been expertly written and crafted to deliver an enticing adventure taking place in the year 1272. Scottish warrior Thorburn MacDougall is in the midst of a battle and about to vanquish his enemy opponent when he discovers a SHE instead of a HE under his enemy’s helm. Norse woman Adele Bjornsdottir has her reasons for concealing her identity and fighting in the battle, most important of which is her plan to escape the clutches of her tyrannical brother.
Now a prisoner of Thorburn a battle of wills soon ensues along with an attraction for each other that will bring about complications, political intrigue and a fiery hot passion that when combined make this narrative a very engaging read!

Scotland 1273

A fast past tale set in a time of fierce warriors and vikings when winner take all.
When a fierce warrior is trying to push back and take out Norwegian invaders, the last thing Thornton expected was a woman under the helmet of his attacker!

He takes her as a captive, but there seems to be a problem.. The fierce attraction that cannot be denied seems to take over!

Adventure, battle, wonderful characters and a fierce love! Great start to an exciting series!

A Scot of Her Own by Maeve Greyson is a short but powerful read. It is much more gritty and raw than many of her books, but that is probably due to the presence of Northmen (Vikings), who seem to engender that sort of story. Thorburn MacDougall was the constable of the troops of the Lord of Argyll, who was the liege to the king of Scotland. He exerted strict discipline over his warriors, including his two brothers, Valan and Ross, and he and his men were trying to enforce the treaty. All of a sudden he spotted a lone warrior, small but scrappy. He took him to the ground and pulled of his helm to see the man's face as he died, and it turned out to be a woman . . . a beautiful woman. He normally did not take prisoners and never allowed his men to harm women and children, but she was now. While trying to wrangle her she kicked him in the knee, with a boot that had a spike on it, covered in poison. He would have to get the medic, this wound being above the powers of his knave, Hendry. When the healer, Marta, was called from the village, the girl, Adellis, spoke against her methods of healing her own wound and Thor's, as well.

This was a case of love at first sight, although neither of them knew it at the time. Neither had any experience with love. When their best spy entered the encampment with a story of the enemy, Thor was quick to follow up, only realizing later it was a trap. He raced back to camp to find it in flames and Adellis gone. Trying not to go off half-cocked, he sent another spy, a novice, to track the Northmen. He had to get her back. Hopefully, alive. This was cunning emotional capture of a strong man, determined to stay on top and always win, and then, brought low by a small woman. She was a woman who had been used and abused and lived by her own wits. She hated her brother and wanted him dead but had promised her mother it would not be by her hand.

The Scots are battling the Norwegians, again. Will it ever stop? The commander of Lord of Argyll’s warriors has just captured the feistiest Norwegian he has fought. Imagine his feelings when he discovers that this experienced warrior is a woman. Thorburn MacDougall is amazed and confused at the same time. Just what is he to do with her? So, the plot thickens and becomes an adventure for both. I enjoyed reading this escapade and I am looking forward to the next journey in the series.

4.5 Stars
When mighty Thorburn MacDougall, commander of the Lord of Argyll’s warriors, overpowers the canniest Norwegian he’s ever battled, he rips off the man’s helm to savour the look of horror right before delivering the killing blow. But the canny Norwegian isn’t a man at all. She’s a blue-eyed beauty with fire in her eyes and fury in her soul. Adellis Bjørnsdóttir weighed the risks and found them worth it. Freedom. At any cost. The only other escape is death, and she’s not ready to give up yet. But the Gallóglaigh warrior, the fearsome Scottish bear she allows to capture her, isn’t the cruel tyrant she thought to endure long enough to secure safe passage to Scotland.
The start of a new series & what a page turner it was, I devoured it in a sitting. Strong characters, fast paced story, sizzling chemistry all made for a very enjoyable read & to cap it all Highlanders & Norwegians. I loved that Thorburn & Adellis actually talked so there weren’t misunderstandings nor angst, they did fall each other hard & fast but it was a novella. I look forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
