Based on the nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb is Tammi Sauer's new upcoming nursery rhyme rendition of Mary Had a Little Plan. This was such a cute read where one day Mary was out walking with her dad and she comes across an empty field. Mary along with her father comes up with a little plan to make the field a place where she and her friends can play and spend their time. Mary Had a Little Plan follows Mary along on her journey to creating the best space ever. I am a sucker for renditions so this was one of my favorite little books and would be great to use for my visits with pre-schoolers. Mary Had a Little Plan by Tammi Sauer is the perfect read for children aged 3-6 years old.

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book was super cute! The text flows really well and it’s a quick read. I adored the message of working hard and working with friends to solve a problem and invest time and energy into something within your community. I think it’s an excellent book for young kids and I got a chuckle at the inclusion of other nursery rhyme characters.

This is definitely one I would pick up to add to my kiddo’s shelf. We have other books about community gardens, but they’re meant for a little older audience so my child doesn’t have the patience to sit through them whereas this one got the message across and was great for young kids with short attention spans.

"Mary Had a Little Plan" is an inspiring book that encourages kids, no matter how small, that they can make a big difference in the world around them.

One day Mary passes an old abandoned lot in the centre of her neighbourhood with a marked up wall and wild weeds growing everywhere. She stops and looks around. Suddenly she knows how to turn the eye-sore into something beautiful that the whole community will be proud of. It needs a cleanup and a complete overhaul. But how will she make that happen?

She receives help from her family, friends and locals that's how. Under Mary's leadership the tight-knit community bands together to make Mary's vision come true. With hard work and determination everyone catches the spirit of the revival, roll up their sleeves and together they create a wonderful space to enjoy where everyone is welcome.

The story is written in rhyme which kids will love and the illustrations are full of colour, detail and life. They are spot on and take you right into the story. I love the diversity of the characters who gather together to creatively transform this space for all of the community to assemble and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The book will spark conversations about environmental themes, leadership, teamwork, imagination and creativity. I love the nod to the nursery rhymes that's a fun component. It's fantastic that a little girl takes the lead and inspires others to get on board and work with her for the good of every resident living there. I highly recommend the book.

I wasn't sure if the twist on Mary Had A Little Lamb could really fill an entire picture's book, but the Sauer did a fantastic job of adjusting the lyrics -- keeping the rhyme and rhythm, while also telling a tale that unfolded as Mary worked with her community to fix a local garden. I thought that the pages balanced the use of white space to draw attention to the text, while also having bold, beautiful illustrations that bring the vivacity of the garden and Mary's energy / enthusiasm to life.

Mary had a little plan is about a child named Mary who finds an abandoned parking lot in her neighborhood and decides to get help to decorate it.

Although a fun way of reading about a parking lot that got a makeover it deserved, I found it to be an okay read. As an adult, I found the meaning to be quite straightforward, but I worry a child, and I’m going to write that it is recommend for 3-6 year-olds, might have difficulties understanding the meaning of it.

Other than that, a cute little read with pretty illustrations. It fell a bit short, to the young readers it’s meant for, but I would definitely recommend it for young readers who are 6+, and are learning to read and better understand the world.

Mary Had a Little Plan by Tammi Sauer was a delightful read! My 5 year old picked out the title and we were so excited to be approved. Mary has a little plan features a girl who is empowered to change a corner of her world. Through Mary's enthusiasm the verse comes together in a fun way including a play on words and rhyming. We loved this book.

As a young little girl Mary has a very smart idea. With help of her father and friends she transform a abandon junkyard become pretty and useful spot to play and learning gardening. Some the action in real not as easy as look in book but this story inspiring kids to have creative mind and aware about environmental.

This was a very cute book. I think it will encourage children in the idea that they can do anything. They can create change even if it seems small. Through team work and help from the community, Mary was able to turn an eye sore into a garden. The illustrations were nice and colorful.

I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Really like the premise of this book and the art is adorable. The characters represent a lot of diverse ethnicities and cultures which is awesome. And the build a Little Free Library which is amazing. But I didn't love the nursery rhyme angle and doubt the ability of small children to decipher the meanings of several of the words.

Further proof of the utterly implausible ideas of the left wing, this book is a perfect rhymed story of a girl purloining an abandoned lot and giving it everything – decorated trees, nicely graffitied walls, a book swap, communal gardens, and probably a treasure at the foot of every Pride flag. It's very well-meaning, and it is done very well, but the simple fact is that this is not doable, and is quite definitely trespass – where's the realism in these kinds of tales of positivity that they need before they register? One for the gullible.

Such an uplifting storybook encouraging the kids as well as the guardians to plant more and make more places green!

The concept is simple but the idea is something that can work well if the kids and the adults are actively involved. Kudos to the team for the cheerful presentation and the artist for the amazing illustrations.

Thank you, Union Square Kids, for the advance reading copy.
