Thank you Top Shelf Productions and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this adorable graphic novel! I really enjoyed the artwork, the magic, and the fast moving plot. It ended too fast for me and I’d love to read more. Looking forward to sharing this book with my YA students and hearing their reactions to it.

A fast, fun and sweet read, with a witchy sapphic romance thrown in.
I had a great time reading this, though it wasn't the deepest of tales. The characters are very cute (especially Stanley!) and the plot whizzes along nicely. There are some threads left unfinished - we never find out why the lady from the Witch Hub has such a vendetta against Margot, for example - and a slower pace would have allowed for more development for characters other than Margot.
I liked the use of colour, though the art style wasn't always to my taste.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

If you're looking for a cute, relatively simple wlw witchy graphic novel this fall, Doughnuts and Doom is the graphic novel for you.

Sometimes you meet someone and you hit it off immediately, and sometimes you accidentally curse the cashier at a doughnut shop, and that's the start of your romance. It happens to everyone right? Well, Margot and Elena unfortunately fall into that second category.

The novel is a mix of sapphic romance, magic, music, and pretty much everything you'd want in a fluffy, witchy graphic novel. I loved the art style and the story was overall very sweet. I do wish it was a bit longer since some of the major plot points were either not fully explained or wrapped up, but overall it was still a great read.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and IDW Publishing for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This adorable little graphic novel won my heart over easily. DOUGHNUTS AND DOOM is a sweet little sapphic romance that gets off to a rocky start-- I'd describe the beginning as more of a meet-ugly than a meet-cute. But it is quickly apparent that first impressions aren't always everything, and that accountability and atonement can repair relationships and bring people together. I loved the limited color palette-- different dreamy shades of blue with occasional pink accents denoting magic. Great characters and complex character dynamics make for a compelling story; creative and fun worldbuilding really makes it pop. I so look forward to seeing what Balazs Lorinczi does next.

Doughnuts and Doom was a quick and heartfelt read. While the art style didn't fully cut for me, the story was 100% what I wanted it to be. A page-turner for the cute graphic novel lovers.

Sweet and fast, perfect combo. The illustrations are simple and the color palette a quirky choice. The story is very simple; a young witch has a mishap in a doughnut shop. Only to later befriend (and flirt) with the young cashier she accidentally cursed, a story of overcoming a challenge. This a fun quick read. I wish it were longer, unsure if the writer has any plans to continue but would love to know where these two go.

The story was a cute enemies to friends to [redacted], which made it all the more fun to read. I never knew I needed a donut-obsessed snake in my life, but now I do. There was a positive portrayal of forgiveness and atonement. I want more from these characters. They were wonderful!

I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Margot is a witch and Elena is a musician working at a doughnut shop. They meet when emotions (and doughnuts) are running high and Margot accidentally curses Elena.
The premise sounded so promising! The art wasn't my style, but I really hoped the story would be enough to carry me through. It sadly was not. Besides the curse, and Elena needing to pass her witch test, there wasn't much going on. Both of those plot points were there but not that important, the romance was a sub-sub-sub plot and my favorite part was Margot's little snake familiar.

**Disclaimer: I received a free advanced readers copy of Doughnuts and Doom by Balazs Lorinczi through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this opportunity.

Doughnuts and Doom by Balazs Lorinczi is a young adult graphic novel about a witch who accidentally curses a musician who works at a doughnut shop and has to right her wrong.  It is set to be published on September 20th, 2022.  I rated it 4 stars on Goodreads.

Here's the summary from Goodreads:

Being a teenage witch--or rock star--is tougher than it looks! But maybe enemies can become friends...or more? Flying brooms and electric guitars set hearts aflame in this fantastically fizzy graphic novel.
When Margot meets Elena, emotions run high, magic is in the air, and doughnuts...float? One is a stressed-out witch trying to get her potions business off the ground, the other is a struggling rock musician whose band is going nowhere. Neither of them are having a good time! No wonder things quickly escalate from words to literal sparks flying when they first meet. Could this be the start of a delicious new relationship...or is a bad-luck curse leading them to certain doom?

This sapphic graphic novel is super cute.

The art style is really adorable.  I like the design of the characters.  They are well drawn and the panels are well illustrated.  I liked the minimal use of colour because it made it really easy to tell when magic was going to be used because the pink colour was really highlighted.  I really enjoyed the visuals of the graphic novel.

The storyline was also cute.  I liked the idea of magic being a fairly accepted part of the world, and how witches would have to go through testing in order to be properly licensed to practice.  I liked the unfortunate way Margot and Elena come together, and how they go from enemies to friends to something more as the story progressed.  They had a really good dynamic, and I found myself really engaged in the story the whole way through.

Overall, I highly recommend that you pick up this graphic novel when it comes out!

6/10
thanks to netgalley and IDW publishing for the arc!
this sapphic fantasy graphic novel is about a witch who accidentally curses a doughnut shop worker, and them falling in love along the way to curing her. i thought the story was cute and the artwork was fun and beautiful, but i felt like something was missing. i liked the ending, but wanted to learn more about the world that they are in and about the characters themselves. it feels a little rushed and needs more developing.

A disastrous meet-cute turns into the one thing that helps a witch pass her test and obtain her license. Very cute story, and a quick read. Students will love this GN!

This was SUCH a cute graphic novel. I loved the romance aspect and the magic system of the world. I loved the two characters and how they grow as people together. I also thought the use of colours in the book really made things pop without needed to be pointed out explicitly. Fun, queer, and super sweet!

This was adorable! I want more.

Margot Grapes is a witch, without a license, and that's becoming detrimental to her way of life. After an extremely bad day and feeling defeated she stops at her favorite doughnut shop and ends up sort of, accidentally, curses Elena, the singer/guitar player of her favorite band "Birds, Birds, Birds." Things don't go well for Elena, and Margot struggles to make things right.
Angsty young adults, f/f pairing, and just a lot of sweetness, this is book to sink your teeth into.

This was a cute quick read about a teenage witch struggling to fine tune her powers. I thought the mild romance was a nice touch as well as the friendship between the band members. The ending could use some work. The story ends very abruptly without really being wrapped up.

I was really excited when I saw the title and the general summary behind this graphic novel. The title was captivating and the book cover intrigued me. I am a sucker for a unique perspective when it comes to art in graphic novels and I was hooked... and then let down.

Again the concept of the story and plotline was nice, but only nice and the delivery of the story was rushed and somewhat of a letdown. I wish more development and story had gone into this graphic novel as it had a lot of potential. The jump from moment to moment was abrupt, and also led to some confusion on my part. I struggled at times to understand the significance of part of the plot due to no development of story or characters and just jumping from one thought to another.

I did give 2 stars because I still love the creativity of the title and the unique style and artistry in the pages of this graphic novel. I even like the plot just wish it were longer to offer more plot and character development.

This was cute. I thought it ended kind of abruptly. I wish there had been more information on the Witch Hub and how witches fit into the general population/world. I think I noticed a werewolf in the background of a group scene? Are there more magical creatures in this world that just weren't mentioned? As is, it's a cute, queer witchy story but it could stand some fleshing out or even a second volume.

Very sweet love story and fabulous art style - I would have liked to get a little deeper into the characters than the author went but would absolutely read another if it were a series!
