An unusual protagonist, he has served Russia, Germany and England, but mostly he serves himself.
The incredibly dangerous situations he gets himself into, and always finds a way out, are entertaining and action-packed, if not always tenable. Based on some fascinating episodes of actual history.

This novel is a spy lover's cup of tea. The main character, Alexsi Smirnoff< had impeccable training from the Soviets prior to being sent to Germany as a spy and ingratiating himself into the highest rungs of German military including even meeting Hitler. But like many things, the best plans don't always go the way we would like. Alexsi is totally focused on his own self-preservation.

Our spy master gets taken by British troops and then through a series of confounding steps becomes a British spy but one who had to go back to Germany. All this is confounding as the Soviets want to rid themselves of the turncoat spy.

A novel builds on suspense during the tumultuous times of WW II and the trust, or lack, between the British and the Soviets. Who will persevere and come out on top? Read this exciting and fast paced novel to find out. Most enjoyable read.

A good spy, WWII thriller. More action than spy craft but good for an action thriller. Might be a good idea to read Christie’s first book in the series , A Single Agent. Christie keeps the plot moving and is a more than adequate writer. I enjoyed the book but didn’t love it. The actions of Alexi were just too unbelievable -sort of like a WWII Jason Bourne. Recommended but not highly.
