I LOVE this book! Hazel Hill is everything we need in middle school. She's full of authenticity and her struggle with friendship hits home for many kids. But it's her fight against sexual harassment that will cause every reader to root for her. It's a realistic fight full of disbelieving adults who made me ANGRY and kids who don't know which side to take. I appreciate Hazel's bumbling yet supportive parents, and I love the confidence she has in her sexuality. Horne navigates this middle school landscape with grace and humor. HAZEL HILL IS GONNA WIN THIS ONE is a must-read for kids looking to find their voice and ready to speak out against injustice, but also for adults who could use a lesson in believing kids. With its riveting storytelling, authentic characters, and satisfying conclusion, HAZEL HILL will win over readers and leave them thinking about this one long after they've finished reading.

Thank you, Clarion Books, for allowing me to read Hazel Hill Is Gonna Win This One early!

Middle-grade books are such a balm for my soul. After reading books targeted to older audiences, titles like Hazel Hill Is Gonna Win This One feel like a breath of fresh air, although they are not often about not-so-light topics. Maggie Horne wrote a spectacular debut.

Hazel along with two new friends, Ella and Riley, decide to try and prove that a popular, well-liked boy has been sexually harassing and cyber bullying Ella. Riley wonders if it’s worth it, but Ella says it has to be so others won’t have to put up with his harassment.. Because Ella and Hazel were getting ready for a speech competition, Hazel comes up with an idea. Will people finally listen and do something?

I would rate this even higher if I could! Hazel's voice is so authentic and I fell in love with her, her parents, and her friends so quickly! This book is funny, frustrating, and touching and reflects the middle school experience of being a girl so deftly and compassionately. I cannot wait for more books from Maggie Horne!
