Thanks Netgalley for the review copy.

I will be buying several copies of this book.
As a Tolkien fan it was super cute and a great way to introduce kids to the father of modern fantasy.
The illustrations were colourful and engaging.
Every classroom needs a copy for sure!

This picture book biography is written about J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The story beings with his childhood in South Africa, follows his childhood and adolescence in England, his family and how he found success as an author. A common theme woven throughout is his passion for literature. The story ends with a timeline and some pictures/biographical information about him.

Each page has beautiful, colour-filled pages with 3-4 lines of text. There is a lot of great biographical information, but it also follows a story that will hook young readers. I believe this book would be best fit for children in the 7-11 age range, and while the Hobbit and LOTR are generally aimed more at older students, I think that children might still enjoy reading and learning about a famous author, and maybe some preteens have watched the movies! As a grade 3 teacher I could definitely see this book in my classroom library in the future!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review a digital ARC of this book!

We love this book series, so I was really excited to see the addition of J. R. R. Tolkien! Both my children and I really enjoyed this one. It is short and simple, but also contained some fun and interesting kid-friendly facts that interested them to Tolkien and his life. Great book!

These are always so special and magical. I think the illustrations always bring them to life - I loved the drawing of the LOTR characters as an extra touch. I've read several books in this series and would definitely recommend.

This was an absolute delight! I learned some lovely things about one of my favorite authors who wrote my number one favorite book, The Hobbit! The illustrations were gorgeous and it made me want to own all of the books in this vein from this author!

Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and to the author for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!

This is my first book in the series "Little People, Big Dreams" I read and I could not resist it because it was about one of my favorite writers "J.R.R. Tolkien". I have to say that I loved the experience and the illustrations were so cute. A good book for little people indeed, in order to let them discover who is behind some of the greatest books of the fantasy genre.

I've been curious about the Little People, Big Dreams collection for a while now. I kept seeing raving reviews of multiple books belonging to this proliferative series, and I couldn't resist adding Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara's newest installment featuring J.R.R. Tolkien to my shelves. What better way to get an introduction to this series than with a bookish person? And I can definitely understand my love for this collection now.

The Little People, Big Dreams books are picture books designed for the younger readers (4-7 years) and they form the perfect short and easy to understand introduction to the lives of important people. They are biographies that are designed for small children to get a basic idea of what the life of the person in question was like and what they did that made them stand out. It's a great way to spark interest and make them want to discover more about the person in the spotlight... In this case, the life of John Ronald Reuel; better know under his pen name J.R.R. Tolkien. While it's true that most children won't have heard of him nor his books before, they might remember him when they grow a little older and want to start reading fantasy. The Hobbit is also a great book to read together with (slightly older) children for an introduction to his work of course.

The illustrations themselves are wonderful and really complement the story. I really liked the use of color and I'm sure they will be very appealing to the target group. I did feel the beginning of the story was a bit dark for such a young reader? There was nothing too explicit and J.R.R. Tolkien had a very sad beginning of his life of course, but still. As a philologist, I could really appreciate the mention of his love for languages and philology: I would have loved to hear even more about the language creation and its importance in the worldbuilding, but it was a bonus to have it mentioned at all. The incorporation of why he created his fantasy world in the first place was also a great touch.

Between the charming illustrations and short and easy to understand text, younger readers will be delighted to read this biography and learn the basics about J.R.R. Tolkien. It's a great introduction to the author's life, and I can't wait to discover more of this Little People, Big Dreams collection!

My thanks to Quarto Group - Francis Lincoln Children’s Books for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘J.R.R. Tolkien’, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Aaron Cushley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a recent addition to the publishers highly acclaimed ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS’ series of mini-biographies that introduces young readers, aged 4-7, to the lives of people who have excelled across various disciplines, including writers, artists, musicians, political figures and more.

I am always impressed how well Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara distills her subjects’ childhoods, including their dreams and aspirations, and demonstrates how these were carried into their adult lives.

Aaron Cushley’s illustrations were adorable and suited his subject, emphasising Tolkien’s love of nature. My favourite picture shows the adult Tolkien sitting under a tree while in the background Bilbo runs to join Gandalf and the dwarves as they embark on their journey.

The book ends with a biographical timeline accompanied by photographs and a suggestion for further reading at an older level.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings played an important role in my childhood since I first discovered ‘The Hobbit’ and that admiration has continued throughout my life.

This was another delightful addition to this excellent series and I have no hesitation in recommending it to parents, educators, and librarians as a way to inspire children to follow their dreams as well as to introduce them to nonfiction. It also would make a thoughtful gift for little ones, who may soon be introduced to hobbits, the Shire and Middle Earth.

The Little People, Big Dreams series is my favorite for kids of all ages and adults, there is something for everyone! Well written, beautifully illustrated, and I love the time line in the back of each book.

This is my first "Little People, Big Dreams" read and it's a great introduction to J.R.R. Tolkein's biography. Illustrated by Aaron Cushley, this is a stunning book.

Beautifully written in a way that is suitable for young minds, Vegara tells this story in a flowing, easy to understand format. It doesn't shy away from some of the hardships Tolkein faced, especially as a young child. The story still feels "light" in spite of this and inspires the younger generation to dream big, which in my opinion is the purpose of this book series.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We just love these books!!! This one is about a very well known -and loved- author. It was a wonderful read as always. We read this book and immediately went and looked up his books!

These books are terrific for younger kids to teach them about important people.

My son did wonder why all the adults only had one long eyebrow. Lol the things kids notice!

Another great addition to the little people big dreams series! I'm ashamed to admit I knew next to nothing about J.R.R. Tolkien expect for the memes about his names. Quick and factual this was a great little way to learn more about him. The illustrations were a lovely accompaniment to the story.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!

What I was looking for: I had seen other installments of these "Little people, big dreams" books in the children’s section and wanted to see one for myself. Also, I wanted to learn more about J. R. R. Tolkien.

What I got: Such a beautiful book! The artwork is great, whimsical and captivating. Obviously, given the target age group and length, the life of J.R.R. Tolkien can only be a rough sketch. But it still gave a good overview and also mentions hard times, i.e. the death of both of his parents and WW1. A great book which I would gift to every young child.

I'm a little ashamed to admit that despite having a Hobbit-themed bedroom and a cat named after my favorite Hobbit, Pippin, I didn't actually know what the JRR stood for prior to reading this book. Thankfully, that has now been rectified. This was an adorable little book about a man who created a world that means so much to so many people. I really enjoyed the timeline in the back for more advanced readers or those seeking to learn more than the story offered. Great addition to a library or classroom!

I'm a fan of Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara's Little People Big Dreams series and like to read them with my kids. I'm also a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien. The illustrations on this one are very well done and adorable. I also appreciate that his love for languages was mentioned. I wish that his language creation and how it played into his world building connected later in the book. It also felt like there was a bit too much mention of death in the first part of the book. I think i'll save this one for a little later with my young ones, when they can also appreciate me reading the hobbit to them but I'm glad to see this added to the series.

Such a fan of the Little People, Big Dreams series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. It is such a treat when you are reading about someone to a child but you also learn something during that process. I had seen the movies, I knew it was based on a book, I knew the author of the books, but I had no idea about J. R. R. Tolkien's life, and in these series, you are always learning something new. My personal favorite is the timeline at the end because it shows the adult being read about and the children could see how from a child with a passion or a special interest you can carry it on to make something really special into their adulthood or profession, that's the best lesson ever.
