I really enjoy reading this book. It was different that the books I have read so far.
Anora Silby running from her past stumbled upon a new future she couldn’t imagine being a part of. She could see the dead and spin a thread that turned souls into coins but she didn’t know that she was a part of something bigger.

Truly amazing. I am loving every single thing Scarlett writes. There's so much adventure and imagination in reading her books. I will definitely be recommending

First I’d like to say a huge thank you to Sourcebooks Bloom Publishing for giving my this E-ARC. As always thoughts and opinions are mine.

When Stars Come Out follows 16 year old Anora Silby who is able to see the dead after the death of her Poppa. Months after his death Anora and his mother moves to a new school and town hoping to star anew but all that changes when Anora stars to see the dead on her first day of school.

Y’all the way I ate this books up was ungodly no cause I need to sequel to this book immediately miss st. clair Idk how I never came across this book when I was in my YA phase in high school but nonetheless this book was sensational.

The plot and writing was so good I am already obsessed over anything Scarlett writes I fell in live with her previous books. I really loved the darkness that this book has even for being a YA book I mean you get past spirits, reincarnation, fated mates, and boys with secret identities, but also a bad ass female main character who can kick ass and starts to find who she is within all that.

Also the relationship between Shy and Anora was so cute and really was giving me young love nobody will tear us apart at some moments and I ate that up.

When Stars Come Out is available on all major retailers on July 26th run and go preorder now!

Thank you to NetGalley, Scarlett St. Clair, and Sourcebooks Bloom Books for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I was SUPER excited to read another Scarlett St. Clair book after loving Touch of Darkness! I was pulled in from page one and could hardly put it down. The haunting mystery kept me wanting more. The story was unique and creative. I was unfamiliar with the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, so I enjoyed it greatly!

I would 10/10 recommend this book to those that love greek mythology type stories. Can’t wait to read it again!

This review will be posted to my Goodreads and Amazon accounts immediately and to my instagram account @ginganinja333 upon publication on 7/26/2022.

When Stars Come out is a well thought out YA paranormal fantasy filled with ghosts, shifters and secret governments. First off, let me just say that I could not put this book down. it was addicting and I already need a book 2 (this is my plea for Scarlett to write another!).

Scarlett does a wonderful job of weaving a creative storyline together that had me turning the page and wanting to know what happens next. Anora can see the dead and happens to have the power of turning spirits into gold coins. Her first day of school is rough, she accidently turns a ghost on campus into a gold coin and then subsequently loses the coin. Now Anora needs to get her coin back and also figure out how to navigate high school while hiding her secrets from those that want to use her.

The plot was really what kept me coming back for more, it gave me the one more chapter feeling every time. Scarlett gives us a mystery that slowly unfolds. We learn along with Anora what is really going on and all the twists and turns were surprising and I don't feel like I ever year guessed what was going to happen next.

The characters were well written although I did feel there could have been a little more depth given to the side characters. For instance, I felt that we never really learned what was wrong with Anora's mother or much about Jacobi or Natalie besides very surface level interactions but they appear in the book a lot. I did enjoy Anora and Shy and felt Anora was easily relatable. She is a teen that just wants to fit in but keeps getting faced with tough choices. She must navigate feeling constantly alone in her world with the dead and knowing who to trust.

I loved the message of this story - mainly to learn how to trust people and don't be afraid to ask for help. There are some big trigger warnings in this book so please do read them before giving this one a shot!

recommended for those that love paranormal, shifters, secret governments, a little YA romance and for fans of books like the Dark Elements series by JLA.

Overall, I loved this story, I don't often find paranormal stories to be as enchanting as high fantasy but this one proved me wrong and I eagerly await a 2nd one.

thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Bloom books for this E-ARC!

This book was so good! The fantastical aspects were really easy to understand, the mystery was gripping and kept making me question who was responsible for the events, the characters were all interesting and has their own stories, and I loved the forbidden romance between Anora and Shy.

4/5 ⭐️

WOW wow wow! First of all this cover is stunning, okay - solid choice for a cover change because wow 😍
I literally did not know about this book until I saw it on NetGalley and hey I love Scarlett St. Clair, I love fantasy/mythology and I love YA it’s the perfect storm!

There was so much about this story that enticing! It was the mystery that kept me thinking about this book until I could read it again! That part of the book was so well paced, so good on Scarlett St. Clair for that one. I do however feel like some different aspects of the book could have been fleshed out a little better but that can totally just be a personal preference thing.

I think one of the biggest things about this book that I didn’t love and why it did not get 5 ⭐️ is that this book probably would have made more sense if the characters were just slightly older, like this could have been NA instead of YA.

All and all pretty good book! Plot was good, pacing was good and the characters were interesting!

Thank you to NetGalley and Source Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Anora can see and speak to the dead. After fleeing New York with her mum, Anora is desperate for a new start, and to be normal but after a ghost appears on her first day at Nacoma Knight Academy, Anora realises it's not so easy to be normal...

After binging the A Touch of Darkness series I just needed more from @authorscarlettstclair!
When Stars Come Out, however, is very different from ATOD - this is very YA. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. It gives us the perfect ratio of life as a teenager at school with all the electricity of a YA fantasy.

This was a fabulous read and I cant wait for more!!

A unique reimagining of Orpheus & Eurydice that leant to a really cool magic system. St. Clair has a very easy writing style that you get lost reading.

"I'm struck by this feeling that she's the embodiment of my heart, and she's walking around outside my chest, and I'd do anything to protect her, no matter the cost."

“Rule number one: ignore the dead”
“Then it’s just me, the school, and the dead girl. Well, crap”
“And there goes rule number three: Don’t capture souls in Oklahoma”
I love Scarlett St Clair!!!!
The first book I read, written by her, A Touch of Darkness, captured my heart and it still has in a tight grip and when the opportunity to read this one presented itself … I couldn’t not try and take the chance !!!!
This book was almost as good as expected … maybe even more!!!!
I fell in love with the plot, the characters’ dynamics and the world building, with the magic system and the romantic theme in it!!!!
I genuinely couldn’t put it down!!!!
And the fact that the story may not be over … the excitement grows !!!!
The story of a girl who can see and capture souls and who finds herself in a strange and uncommon school with people and situations she cannot understand, while trying not to catch too much attention on herself.
And the story of a boy who somehow stars doubting everything his Institution says.
Great, great, great reading !!!!
If you haven’t read the book when the author first self-published it, you absolutely have to do it now !!!
“The shadow knight who breaks her heart or the ones who breaks the rules?”
“My words flood the air between us far past midnight, when stars come out and monsters come to life”

DNF @ 40%

The pacing just wasn’t working for me and unfortunately I couldn’t get much further than this, and getting to this point was really, really slow.

The characters were not vibing with me unfortunately either, I didn’t love them despite how much I wanted to.

I loved her Hades and Persephone series so I’m gutted that this one just wasn’t for me.

From gothic to magical, ghosts, Ravens and dark academia. I young YA romance, but I wanted more, which would have moved the story further, The premises of the book was enjoyable, maybe I have invested more into the NA writing of the author.

This was such an amazing debut YA by St.Clair!!! The mythology component was genius! I loved the Shadow-Knights, and how they fit with Anora’s role as the Eurydice. I wish I knew more about some of the backstory… Shy and Anora’s past lives, her time in New York, etc.
I could also see a potential for Roth to have his story told as well! I couldn’t put it down!

4 out of 5 stars!

Scarlett St. Clair has done it again! This time in a YA fantasy/paranormal story!

The blurb and cover intrigued my interests and the book did not disappoint!

Before I begin, this story has reference to suicide so if that’s a trigger for you, then I don’t recommend reading this book!
Anora is a great and edgy character who lost her Poppa not so long ago. She moved to the new area with her mum, where she started the school.
Anora can see the dead - which is a pretty cool thing to do - unless it pulls you into another world that you didn’t see coming.
Anora has a hard time dealing with the death until she meets someone who also sees them.

Loved this story and cannot wait to see where it takes us! This story is definitely different from the other books that Scarlett has written; but definitely not worse !

I really REALLY hoping to like this.
but I ended up feeling...meh about it.
I was bored, nothing really stood out to me. There were aspects of the story that were interesting (turning souls into gold coins, cool!) But something about the plot felt tired. Person who can see the paranormal is sent to a special school because a parent/relative thinks they are crazy? So tired.
And the instalove....was too much, I didn't even really feel the chemistry between the characters.
Maybe Scarelett ST. Clair's books aren't for me.
final rating : 3 stars

Apparently indie books do occasionally get picked up by larger publishers. This book totally deserved it. It was amazing. I can't stop thinking about it. I was even trying to explain the story to my dad earlier today. It's that good.

However, first off, there is (and should be) a trigger warning. If suicide is a trigger for you, you won't want to read this book. There are several suicides and references to suicides. These are tragic events, and seen as such. But they happen. There are also a lot of dead people. A lot, a lot. The thing is, Anora can see dead people.

It started when her Poppy died, and he saw his soul emerged and then turned it into a coin. Really. It happened just like that. But when she tells her mom, her mom threatens to send her to a mental institution, so that's out. Instead, they move to Oklahoma, to a new school, and unfortunately, Anora sees dead people there, too, and things begin to get really strange.

But Anora is determined to make a new start, so she gives herself three rules. 1. Ignore the dead. 2. Absolutely no boys. And 3. Don't capture souls in Oklahoma. I'll let you guess how many chapters it takes for her to break her rules.

This is the perfect "we love each other but can't be together" trope. It also takes the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to a new level. And in addition to the death-speakers, we get to meet a group of people called Valryns who take on three forms: human, raven, and a hybrid of the two. I mean, who of us hasn't wished we could do that! If you like high school drama with supernatural characters, dark settings, and morally gray characters, you will love this book. It was quite the ride and I eagerly anticipate book 2.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and have reviewed it because it was amazing!

TW : Suicide (Lots of mentions and depictions), Death, Blood, Violence, Kidnaping, Plane Crash, Fire

I enjoyed this book a lot more than expected, I requested it on a whim as I’ve loved all of Scarlet’s previous books and was curious how she would handle YA and it’s restrictions. This book is very violence and is descriptive for its violence almost up to the do not pass go line for YA fiction. I thought this was a fun mythology retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice and I’m curious how it continues in the next book. I did not know going into the book that it was a mythology retelling but I was very pleasantly surprised by it.

Our main Character Anora, has been keeping a secret ever since her Poppa died that she can now not only see ghosts but can turn them into coins. After she accidentally kills someone in her old school, she and her mother move to Oklahoma to get a fresh start and send Anora to a school that deals with special kids. Anora meets Shy, who is the quarterback and popular guy at Nacoma Knight Academy and they have an instant connection. Anora still doesn’t feel like she fits in as she’s trying to hide her past from everyone, especially her new school gossip app, Roundtable, that seems to know everything about everyone.

The romance in this book was very much instant love but I didn't mind as the couple did seem to get to know each other before fully going into a romance. Eurydice is always reincarnated with a protector and they have a special bond that connects them so they can sense each other's feelings and wellbeing at all times.

The fantasy elements of this book were very intriguing. We have the Valryn, who are basically raven shifters, that are trained to fight to protect the world and serve Charon and are tasked with protecting the Eurydice whenever she is alive. There are also witches and death speakers, I did wish we had seen a bit more about the witches because the one scene we did get was very interesting and I would have loved knowing more about their magic. The Order is the government of the Valryn and their dynamic and how they expected everyone to follow orders no matter if there was evidence to back them up or not was really reminiscent of some real life situations. One other not well explained magic element is the Influence that causes people to act very out of character and almost always kill people, which we see in a plane crash in Switzerland and a fire in London.

I recommend this for fans of loose mythology retellings, romance, and urban fantasy. This was a great YA debut from Scarlett St. Clair and I’m excited for book 2.

I enjoyed this dark fantasy read and thought it was great if you are looking for an easier read. When I first started the book, I was a little unsure of the writing style as I felt like it was a little on the simpler side and the book starts off with only whispers of magic. It wasn’t until I got about a third or half way into the book that it picked up for me and I started to feel more immersed in the world created.

This book takes place in a small and strange town in Oklahoma where there are tons of souls and a fresh new start for our high school aged main character, Anora. I thought this main character was a fairly typical altruistic protagonist - she wants to be a good person and can be brave and rash. However, I didn’t feel like she was someone that I could relate to and most of her personality revolves around wanting to be good and trying to figure out her powers. I felt pretty neutrally about her, I didn’t fall in love with her but also did not find her to be annoying.

This book is written mostly from a first person point of view from our main character, with a few chapters written from a secondary main character’s point of view, Shy, our mysterious main male character. The writing style is easy to understand and the pace of the book is pretty quick. I think the two points of view really help fill the reader in on more background without dragging out the book for Anora to learn of these things.

As the book centers around seeing the souls of the dead and there is a death on the campus, one of the main themes of this book is grief and how different people handle death differently and how sometimes holding onto your grief isn’t always the best. Additionally, the book also covers complex parental relationships between these high school kids and their parents. I thought this was interesting to read about and made for more interesting character motivations.

I would say this book is about learning to believe in yourself and stand up for what you believe in. The main character starts her journey trying to keep her powers a secret, never really believing in herself but really develops throughout the book. I believe there is a sequel and I can’t wait to see what else she is capable of. Additionally, a lot of the characters really struggle to determine if they should follow their ruling government even when they don’t necessarily agree with their practices, which is another big theme the author includes.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a darker fantasy book that is easy to read and has some mystery and romance elements. This book has some dark imagery, unique magical creatures and mysterious boys. In addition, this book has quite a few twists, some more seasoned fantasy readers may be able to predict but are fun to follow regardless.

I’d like to thank SourceBooks Bloom Books for providing me with an eARC of this book.
