i was pretty underwhelmed by this story. imogen's narration style was also grating at times. i had the strong sense that i had read this story before the entire time i was reading it, as the plot just felt a bit tired.

Thank you for the arc ! This was not quite for me. There were moments of relatability. Overall I just didn’t feel a connection with the characters and found myself skimming over some pages.

I was instantly attracted to the premise of this book. Two female characters at two different points in life/career trying to navigate the world of magazine publishing/writing. For the most part I really enjoyed getting to know both Imogen and Harri but there were times where it felt the story needed a bit more of something I can't put my finger on.

All Imogen wants is for her internship to turn into a proper writing job. Harri is a seasoned and established fashion editor who did not think her next career step was going to be trying to get a new feminist site, The Know, off the ground. She brings Imogen on board because of the content Imogen creates on her blog - spicy and personal. At first Imogen is thrilled but as the job starts taking over more and more of their persona life, both women will have to take a closer look at their dreams and their careers.

Both Imogen and Harri were complex and interesting characters and I think many women will find the subject matter relatable. I was invested in finding out how each one of them will navigate reconciling personal dreams and desires with the realities of their respective careers. As I mentioned in my intro though for the most part I enjoyed Careering, I kept wanting a bit more from the story. I'm sure there will be many fans of contemporary fiction with a penchant for novels about magazines and writing who will find this an enjoyable read.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for gifting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Careering by Daisy Buchanan was a great read! Definitely enjoyed it! Not sure why I waited so long to read it but glad I did. Looking forward to the next great read by author.

Imogen and Harri are the Thelma and Louise of the British women’s media realm! They both have realizations, in their respective roles in the Hudson company, of what a “job” can do for them versus how it can change their lives. This story had its moments of introspective narratives from the MC’s POVs, but it also touched on the broader aspects of human nature and how we all fall into a trap of tunnel vision of what we imagine “could be,” instead of “what is.”

Really glad I found a different reading version of this book and finally finished it!

Awaiting an EPUB copy from the library to complete my review, as reading a PDF version on my phone is migraine inducing. Will review properly later but, 25% in, I’m definitely intrigued in the story development.

This ARC was provided by the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

This book was quite different than what I expected when picking it up. If you are looking for a light and comedic read this one definitely fits that category!

Queue two women trying to fall back in love with their job in a toxic workplace. They are under appreciated and consistently let down in their place of work. Imogen is in her twenties and has her *dream* job at a magazine company which turns out to leave her questioning her choice, strapped for cash and navigating a tricky family situation. Harri is in her forties and thinks she is becoming the next big editor when the rug is swept out from under her and she is moved to an online blog site.

I haven’t read a book quite like this (doesn’t have the usual romance I read) but it is hilariously honest and encapsulates what it is to be a woman in the workplace. If you’re looking for something light, easy to read, funny and honest this is the one for you. I found some of the Language to be a little tricky or perhaps overly verbal if that makes any sense at all but otherwise really easy to follow along with.

DNF - I might see if the audiobook format brings me more success than a traditional format approach. I was interested but I also think that it wasn't the right time to try & read this so I think I will revisit this in future.

This year has very much been the year of writing about young women going through it and this book fits right in there. I'm once again asking authors to continue writing books that I literally have to remind myself are not about me. Really enjoyed this one! The dialogue is sometimes a little off/cringe but other than that I thought it was well paced and a really good story. Devoured this over 2 days, could not get enough!

I loved the premise of this book!! Reading about a woman dealing with career burnout was utterly relatable but I found the execution fell a little flat for me. Just an okay read. Would definitely recommend for fans of A hundred other girls by Imani Hairi-Kia. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I loved this book’s cover and the synopsis really caught my eye, however I quickly disliked the author’s writing and the story was quite cringey. Bummer- I had hopes for this one but after quickly losing interest I gave up!
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for this ARC!

There was lots to enjoy in this book: a relatable and witty main character, vivid supporting characters, and lots of interesting plot twists. It was a fun read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read it in advance of publication!

I loved the cover and the synopsis made the storyline sound appealing but Careering just was not for me. I didn’t find anything about it hilarious.
Thank You to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This book is definitely written for youngish adults who are trying to figure out work-life balance and "adulting". We often create our identities based on the roles we fill in life, like a job, but careers are not supposed to be our whole lives either. I like that the book the focus on burnout, being too high achieving (and unrealistic) in our expectations of ourselves and our jobs. With the added touch of relatable characters and hilarious storylines, this book is fun to read and gives you lots of chances to reflect on your own life too. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

Imogen is in her late twenties and her career as a writer has not emerged. Working multiple jobs to support her internship at Panache, a woman’s lifestyle magazine, and writing her sex blog in her free time, she is doing everything to support her dream. Harri has been in the publishing world for a long time and is expecting to be promoted to editor in chief at Panache. When instead Harri is moved to a start-up she takes Imogen with her to be a staff writer, covering the modern young woman’s sex life.
A raw and honest look at what it feels like to be young and struggling with your friends, career, sex life, and feeling like everyone else is doing just a bit better than you. Imogen is part of so many women I know and myself. Just trying to figure her own life out while the world and everyone else’s expectations and opinions are bombarding her at every step. Harri has paid her dues and is still trying to get the respect she deserves. And she is determined to take her team and her new magazine and show everyone what they can do.
I really enjoyed this book. I love any book where I can see the reality of the situation. My heart went out to both of these women and all the characters in their circle.

Thank you to Daisy Buchanan and Penguin Random House and Netgallery for providing me a copy of Careering to review.

Careering tells the stories of two women, Imogen and Harri, grinding their way through their careers in the same media publishing company. Imogen is a struggling intern working multiple unsatisfying jobs to make ends meet and working on her sex blog in her free time. Harri is more established in her career and is on the precipice of a promotion when things take an unexpected turn.

The novel switches POVs between Harri and Imogen and has several open-door descriptions of sex scenes. The experiences of both main characters are relatable yet something was lacking. I found I was often frustrated with Imogen and bored with Harri. There just wasn’t quite enough humour in the writing and there were a few too many underdeveloped side characters.

If you like reading about toxic office culture in the vein of The Devil Wears Prada you might enjoy this one.

Thank you, NetGalley for this ARC!

Careering by Daisy Buchanan was laugh out loud funny as well as highly relatable. It invites readers to consider their own relationships with work and passion. Millennials, especially, will connect with the portrayal of the uphill slog that is hustle culture.

Funny, relatable, hopeful.

Thoroughly enjoyed. 4 Stars.
