I loved this book. Such a feel good story about family, secrets, and starting over to follow your dreams.
Meghan's dream was to become a chef, but after years of working a dead end job, she and her best friend, Tess, decide to pack it in and spend the summer at the house on the beach she inherited from her Pappy. Things are harder there than she thought. Pappy's house has been empty for over ten years, and the repairs are piling up faster than she can make money. But under all the stress, there is a mystery that needs to be solved. The problem is the key to the mystery is inside the head of an older man suffering from the onset of dementia.
The characters in the story were awesome, so easy to relate to and cheer for. The plot flowed smoothly from scene to scene. Highly recommend .

Meghan, and her best friend and her labrador leave NYC for Hatteras, NC. As someone who had lived on an island south of there for a summer it was a fun read to spark fond memories of the outer banks. A bit of romance, a bit of mystery, and plenty of interaction leads to a good read. Have enjoyed this author in the past and this was no exception. Would recommend. Would make a great summer read.

I have been a fan of Jenny Hale's for a while now, but I believe this is her best work yet. Such an encompassing story of fate. The Universe aligns for Meghan. She travels to the Outer Banks to claim the house her grandfather willed to her. It's the one place she has always felt centered - where she finds her calm. With aspirations of becoming a chef, she believes a fresh start is what she needs. An elderly gentleman, suffering from dementia, mistakes her as his long, lost love. She is fascinated with his story and is determined to discover the connection between her and his lost love, Hester. And as they say - the rest is fate.

Such a great beach read! This is a feel-good book perfect for the summer and full of romance. I love Jenny Hale and was delighted to read this story set in Hatteras. Leaving New York City, Megan Gray returns home to where she grew up with her late Pappy on Hatteras Island to find her calm. Megan is grieving and lost, flailing in the direction where life should lead her. On the island she meets a brooding but handsome man, Toby and his ailing grandfather who mistakes her for a golden age movie star. Megan, while falling for Toby, she sets out to unravel the mystery of what is real and what is his grandfather’s delusion. With an envelope containing the contents left to her from her Pappy, Megan also unknowingly holds the key to a secret that will unlock her future.
This heart-warming romance is a quick read that is a delight. You can feel yourself on the sand with the sound of the surf. It’s just pure enjoyment.

I love love love Jenny Hale, and An Island Summer was good, but I must admit it wasn’t my favorite. The main character, Meghan, has recently lost her Pappy and quit her job to move in to his place, bringing a friend named Tess with her. They kind of had a strange friendship, one I didn’t always understand. Meghan is understandably grieving, and after a while Tess mentions, “you have quite an attachment to your pappy, don’t you?” Uh, duh, he raised her after her parents died. On the flip side, Tess was excited about the move and the new possibilities, whereas Meghan was seemingly bringing her down at every turn. I can look past it knowing how difficult it is to grieve for your loved ones, but she was so lost that she was just becoming negative about everything. They soon meet Toby and Rupert. Rupert has dementia and thinks Meghan is an old Hollywood starlet, and Toby is his grandson who is rumored to be stealing millions from his grandfather. That part of the plot felt a bit awkward to me, but I understand that Meghan was attached to Rupert because he reminded her of her pappy. The second half was much better than the first, so if you’re struggling, push through! All in all, it’s a pretty cute beach read, I’d recommend adding it to your summer list!

First of all, I like all front covers of Jenny Hale's books--they are so pretty! Second of all, the story was heartwarming family drama tale.

Meghan Gray's seems to crumble in New York and decides to move back to her grandfather, Peppy's place in Hatteras Island for the summer. While in the island, she meets entrepreneur, Toby. While the two hit off, Toby's grandfather, Ruper who is suffering from dementia, mistakenly thinks she is Hester Quinn. Along with her best friend Tess, she tries to solve a mystery her grandfather had left her--an old photograph with a mysterious key and soon she finds some family secrets.

Nearly all of Jenny Hale's books are based on family ancestral stories with a little bit of family secrets that ties to the story. The writing was really great though there were some boring bits in the story. Unraveling the secret part, finding about Hester Quinn and the budding romance between Meghan and Toby was great.

Overall, if you like a light romance with a summer vibe in it, then this book is one for you--worth four stars

Romance mixed with mystery, in a beautiful coastal setting - this book ticked all the boxes for me. It’s the perfect beach read, being relaxing but with an engaging plot to keep you hooked. I was engrossed right from the start and couldn’t put it down. I love the idea of making a fresh start on an idyllic island so found it easy to relate to Meghan when she moved to the island. I found this a great read for the Summer.

After her career in NYC as a chef doesn’t materialize, Meghan returns to Hatteras Island with her friend Tess. The two move into Meghan’s grandfather’s cottage and get jobs as waitresses at a local inn. Meghan becomes friends with Rupert the inn-owner’s grandfather who suffers from dementia. There’s also a spark between his grandson Toby and Meghan but Toby clearly is hiding something. When Rupert mistakes Meghan for his long, lost love Hester, Meghan feels drawn to find out more about her. Jenny Hale has included sufficient mystery and romance to keep the reader engaged. It was a bit slow in parts but overall I enjoyed it. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.

An Island Summer by Jenny Hale is a beautiful story about following your dreams, remembering family, and new beginnings. I enjoyed this book very much! Meghan Gray had planned to become a successful chef in one of the prestigious restaurants in New York but was passed over for the chance. Meghan decides that serving tables for ten years while she knows she could do much more is too frustrating to continue. So, what could be better than having your best friend Tess join you on a trip home to Hatteras Island? Megan has the old envelope with items left to her with the old home when Pappy died. She feels confident that she and Tess will be able to find jobs while they stay in the old fishing cottage and decide what to do with their lives.
Meghan meets Toby Meyers with his grandfather one evening and is surprised when the older man calls her Hester and becomes distraught. It is soon apparent that Rupert, who is experiencing dementia, thinks Meghan is his best friend from years ago. I loved this whole storyline and how it links the past with the present.

I really enjoyed Meghan and Toby's story. Once Toby's grandfather gets involved things start to happen and make sense. It's like a treasure hunt for their future and falling in love along the way

An Island Summer was a great feel-good romance set in an idyllic place with the happy ending many would fantasize about. It took a while for the book to garner momentum and the pace to quicken, but the second half contained an inheritance mystery that made it more exciting as more clues are revealed. I did find it rather slow at first, but the plot surrounding Hester was quite fascinating and well thought-out.

It was a little summery treat, the kind of beach read romance that does deliver on its promise of entertainment and escapism.

I enjoy reading Jenny Hale's books! An Island Summer is the perfect read for this summer! I loved the friendship between Meghan and Tess. It was was a heartwarming story about friendship, loss, love and new beginnings. Great read!

When an old man with dementia mistakes her for an old movie star, she plays along, not realising just how much this will change her life.

A quick and easy read with a nice mix of characters which was enjoyable and entertaining.
