Oh man this was an amazing installment in this series! We got to learn a bit about the history of magic in Chicago, and oh, I had a great time learning about it all! And dealing with such an interesting-but devastating-threat!

This scheme with long awaited vengeance? Yeah, it was interesting to get these pieces of information, and given the way the book went, I'm hoping we'll learn more about the past, since there were so many secrets there!

And oh, the developments! Lulu had a pretty big part, and I need to see more from her. And then there's the pack and some interlopers causing trouble. And between the threat that was posed by the bad guy, and what they did...I had to keep turning the pages, it was so compelling!

Oh that last chapter? There's a few important pieces of information dropped-and actions that I need to know what's going to happen next. They're going to have consequences, and after what they just went through, well, at least they have a little bit of experience-they're going to need it!

Loved this book, and I need to know what's going to go!

Devouring Darkness is the Fourth installment in author Chloe Neill's Heirs of Chicagoland series. Elisa Sullivan, the only born, not made vampire, has become part of Chicago's Supernatural Ombudsman office. After a request from Roger Yuen, the Ombudsman himself, Elisa and Theo Martin agree to escort a source named Rose, who can manipulate emotions, from Edenton, Illinois to Chicago. Rose has been a sort of undercover, giving Roger heads up to problems that may arise.

With the demon loose, Chicago is under siege with chaos wreaking havoc. The stakes are high, as Elisa and her allies, Lulu, Alexei, Theo, Petra, Ariel Shaw, and Detective Gwen Robinson of the Chicago PD, try to find the demon, and stop her from destroying Chicago. When the demon targets Cadogan House, Elisa and her allies have only a few days to find a way to defeat the demon before the House is gone forever.

Elisa, as you may know, also has been fighting with an internal monster that she has come to accept as being part of her. She's also become very independent from her own parents Ethan Sullivan and Merit and Cadogan House which she has not pledged loyalty to. Elisa has her best friend Lulu Bell who is trying to make something of herself as an artist. I will say this non spoiler-y, pay attention to Lulu in this story. I will also say that Lulu's parents, Mallory and Catcher Bell, are brought back to the city because of a dangerous demon who puts everyone in dangerous.

I will also hint that there are things going on with the North American Central Pack which will affect Connor Keene going forward. As the title of this series says, he is the heir of the pack and it's only a matter of time before his father decides to retire. I will also say this, prepare for anything. There are literally two endings to this book, and one of them is a cliffhanger. No spoilers. I will say that it has been sometime since this villain has had conflicts with Elisa, and now it appears that the villain has done something that will change things for the worse.

In this episode of the Heirs of Chicagoland series, Elisa and her colleagues have to find and capture a chaos demon who has damaged one of the wards built in 1872 which allowed her entrance.

While Elisa is busy dealing with the chaos demon, the Pack is dealing with interlopers from out of town who have come to lodge complaints. Connor is pulled between helping Elisa and helping with the pack.

Things get much worse when the demon causes Cadogan House to disappear just before Elisa and Connor arrive for a brainstorming session about removing the demon from Chicago. Trapped in the house are Elisa's parents, Connor's parents and Lulu Bell's parents along with the head of one of the other vampire houses and all the vampires who were at home when Cadogan House was removed.

Elisa and her team now have to figure things out on their own without the help of older vampires and the extensive library at Cadogan House. Lulu is so angry that she decides that she has to share a secret she's been keeping for ten years about her reasons for not using her magic.

The story was fast-paced and filled with action. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the worldbuilding in a Chicago with a variety of supernaturals. Fans of the series won't want to miss this latest episode.

Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill is the 5th book in her fantastic Heirs of Chicagoland series. Refresher: Elisa Sullivan, our heroine, is the only vampire child ever born, and her parents (Ethan & Merit) are the powerful leaders of the vampires that lead Chicagoland. Connor Keen, our hero, is a werewolf and the heir apparent to the North American Central Pack Apex (Alpha). Connor and Elisa have become a wonderful romantic couple, as the chemistry between them is sizzling.

When Elisa and her Ombudsman colleagues agree to escort a troubled sorcerer to Chicago, they quickly learn that the woman they were trying save was a demon. With the demon loose, Chicago is under siege with chaos wreaking havoc. The stakes are high, as Elisa tries to find the demon, and stop her from destroying Chicago; Connor always shows up to be by her side throughout. Things become worse when Elisa’s family home disappears, which includes her mother, father, Connor’s mother, father, and many others we knew from previous books. Time is of essence, as they only have a few days to stop the demon and save the family. Connor is also under pressure from an out-of-town pack that plans on taking over his pack and challenging him.

I love how Elisa and Connor were so great together, with both of them always supporting each other, constantly being by their side whenever needed; even though she was a vampire and he was a werewolf. They were both independent, strong, savvy and very much in love, with awesome chemistry. It was also nice to see many of the recurring characters in this series, such as Lulu, Alexi, Theo, Petra, as well as many of the originals from Chicagoland.

What follows is an exciting action filled adventure, especially in the last half of the book as the danger escalates, with threats are escalated. Devouring Darkness was very well-written by Chole Neill, with lots of action, romance, fun and intense. Once again, I thought Elisa was a fabulous heroine, and we got a glimpse of the monster inside of her, who would help her when the danger escalated, adding the strong element of a berserker. Only Connor was aware of the monster.

Chloe Neill gives us another great story, with a wonderful couple, great secondary characters. Devouring Darkness was an exciting, tense, nonstop action filled addition to this wonderful series. I wholly suggest you read this series. I can’t wait for more.

In Devouring Darkness enters a chaos demon—just what Chicago needs! Said demon manages to disappear the whole of Cadogan House with all of the parents inside it, and without their presence Elisa, Connor, and Lulu all manage to grow a bit more. Connor has to face the responsibilities of being heir to the pack, Lulu starts down the path of accepting her magic, and Elisa begins to understand her monster. Oh, they also try to get their parents back, of course.

All in all, with its solid character development and plot, Devouring Darkness is a great installment in the Heirs of Chicagoland series.

I received this ARC at no cost from NetGalley.com and am providing an unbiased review.

This is the fourth book in this spin-off sereis of Heirs to Chicagoland, and takes off pretty much from where the last book ended. I have enjoyed Chloe Neill's writing style and story-telling ability from the start with the 'Chicagoland Vampires' series, and she is able to keep a story going through the children of the main characters from that series is nice. It will be nice to see possible future installments as some issues still have not been resolved (I won't spoil by listing).

Overall was a pretty fast read for me, and kept my attention. There is some love interests, mild flirtation, and some action scenes that were written well. I would defintely recommend this series to anyone that is interested in Urban Fantasy.

A demon is loose in Chicago, wreaking havoc wherever she goes.  At the same time, NAC has their handful with some pack members not happy with the current state.  Dueling priorities mean Elisa and Connor have to split their focus as they try to protect their city with the help of their friends.

I've genuinely been enjoying this series, but I never thought there would come a point where Connor and Elisa would surpass Merit and Ethan....until this book.  Ethan and Merit were placed on this pedestal of the perfect couple, in my opinion, because of all they went through.  The struggles, the fights, the friendship, and finally their romance.  It wasn't easy for them, but they figured it out.  I wasn't sure what to expect with Elisa and Connor, from the two toddlers fighting in the epilogue in Blade Bound to the adults in Devouring Darkness.  But as I finished this book, I realized that Connor and Elisa are so much more than their parents.

What I love about Elisa and Connor is their support and understanding of the other.  They know who the other is and they never try to stand in the way of doing what they must.  They worry, but they constantly support.  They know the good, the bad, and the ugly about each other and none of that matters.  Ethan may have learned to do all of this for Merit, it's almost instinctual with Connor and it's why I think they've surpassed Elisa's parents.

As always, our hero/heroine save the day, but the ending of the book (plus the epilogue) shows there's at least one more story for this series.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....let there be one more story.  I need a complete ending for Connor and Elisa.  So...just one more...PLEASE!

I’ve been reading this author for years, and I was so excited when she started this series. I’m glad it’s still going strong after this fourth book. Elisa is a very independent character, almost more than her mother. I love that this latest let’s us see most of the characters from the first series, Chicagoland, together again, but not long enough to satisfy me. There were secret reveals, action, and some very interesting plot twists in this. However, there were a couple of slow moments as well. Thankfully, that didn’t detract much from the book, and it is a well-written, urban fantasy full of fun, intense action, and romance. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Chloe Neill continues her series The Chicagoland Vampires with this story centering on the only born vampire, Elissa Sullivan, and her friends and family. Neill allows the reader to pick up on the relationships, the action, and the characters without having to read the entire previous series, but without boring readers already familiar with her work. For fans of Urban Fantasy, Neill is a skillful storyteller, as she moves her tale along, engages, and entertains. There is personal sacrifice, mystery, good character development, and a complex story to tell.

Elisa and Connor are back - defending Chicago from a demon who is trying to take over the city. When a request for a pick-up becomes an attack by angry ghosts, Elisa discovers secrets about the city that even the supernatural powerhouses are unaware of. If the team can't figure out how to stop a chaos demon, there will be no place to call home.

I continue to enjoy this spin-off of Chicagoland Vampires. Elisa and Connor's relationship is now solid. Lulu is coming into her magic and Chicago is getting the next generation of Ombuds to defend its borders. Bravo!

#netgalleyarc SO GOOD! I almost gave this book 5 stars but there were a few slow moments that kept me to a 4, really a 4.5. Dare I say I’m loving this series more than the original one? I think I might be. I love the variety of characters in this series and loved the teamwork in this book. Not something I see my students enjoying but I loved it.

DEVOURING DARKNESS is book four in the Heirs of Chicagoland series and this time, Elisa has her hands full when she gets involved with a troubled sorceresses. The stakes are high if she can’t quickly get a handle on things, but luckily, she has someone like Connor to help her navigate through the supernatural streets of Chicago.

Chloe Neill keeps things pretty light with this book. The banter and flirtation has always been one of my favorite things about her writing and although there’s a lot of action and suspense throughout the novel, I feel like these little parts make the book for me. Neill does a good job of balancing the romance and action, so there’s enough of both to satisfy any reader.

If you haven’t read this series yet, I would definitely suggest reading the original Chicagoland series first, but you’ll have plenty to look forward to with this series that follows Ethan and Merit’s daughter. Elisa is a wonderful protagonist that I enjoy reading about. She’s never too much, but has a lot of interesting quirks to her as well.

All in all, this is a fun book that definitely made the night fly by.

3.5 stars

My emotional investment in the “demon attacking Chicago” storyline was underwhelming until the halfway point, when the stakes suddenly became interesting. As usual: I like the Elisa/Connor ship a lot; their romantic relationship is settled/conflict-free in this installment. I have a feeling that won’t last considering Elisa’s inner monster issue is still unaddressed. I’m also nervous about how they’re going to resolve the mortal/immortal issue — I know Connor is cool with it, but the difference makes me legit anxious. I’m sorta hoping that Elisa becomes mortal; immortality seems kinda sad if all your friends die off.

Disclaimer: I received a free e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God!! Those last 2 chapters...Oh my God!!!

So I LOVED this installment. As I've said before and will probably say again, I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! It really is the perfect spin-off/continuation of a series. Having said all that, this book ratchets up everything! I don't know what to say without giving stuff away. The pacing was great and this was incredibly hard to put down...especially since I had to work! We learn more about some of the more secondary characters. There is drama and chaos and it was just such a fun roller coaster ride. I really can't wait for the next installment...but I must...so now the withdrawls begin as I wait for about a year to find out what happens next! UGH, not sure if my heart can take it!
