Thank you to Kind World Publishing and NetGalley for the advanced copy!

Lumber Baby tells the story of an energetic, tactile and curious baby who just won’t go to sleep. The end of the day approaches, and his parents try their best to convince him to get some rest. Unfortunately, everything they try only seems to rev him up even more! That’s when Big Sis saves the day.

It was fun reading about a baby that, pretty obviously, enjoyed the sensory aspect of play. The art is sweet, simple, and colourful. I love the emphasis on the colourful characters that contrasted with the greyscale of the background. The characters appeared dynamic - lots of grand gestures and funny facial expressions! Children are sure to love the illustrations!

As for the writing? When reading the story aloud, it sounds like poetry! Other reviews have called the style “lyrical”, and I’m inclined to agree. There’s just something about the flow of words that feels familiar. However, my one gripe with the story is the lack of satisfactory conclusion. <spoiler> Very sweet that Big Sis noticed Lumber Baby’s need for sensory stimulation, but I would’ve much preferred that observation resulted in utilising a white noise machine or something. Instead, the rest of the family goes off to have a good night’s sleep and Lumber Baby is left to his own devices - which is a saw!? </spoiler>

Overall, a solid 4 star read. Children will enjoy listening and looking at it. Caregivers will enjoy reading it.

This would have been my youngest's favourite book as a toddler. He loved play tools and tape measures and all things construction. He cut his 2nd birthday cake with a plastic saw 🤣

The pictures were cute and the story was silly but relatable. Very fun.

I think this book is based on the story of Paul Bunyan though I'm not super familiar with that story. This story tells of a little baby lumberjack who cannot settle down. His family is at their wits end after trying everything that calms most babies. Once his sister realizes that lumber baby is not a regular baby and is actually a mini lumber jack, she gets him a blue ox, creates a (sound proof?) logging room and leaves the baby to his sawing. While maybe not the best parenting advice, I think this book is super cute and hilarious. It has a rhyming text so it will be fairly accessible for young readers. There is one scene where the baby rolls on his tummy during a diaper change so you see his naked bum, but often children find that hilarious and it is not meant to be inappropriate or harmful. I would recommend this book to families and teachers of young readers in the 5-9 age range. It is a funny and enjoyable book that a family or class will love to read together. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this great book!

Lumber Baby is a delightful little book with great puns to tickle both adult and child. I loved the artwork, as well as the way the story gave a nod to Paul Bunyan.

This was super cute and super sweet, perfect for parents and adults, carers and teachers and providers looking for their children to read books. I was grinning the entire way through, I honestly thought it was great!

I think this has the potential to be a really cute bedtime story. I liked the imagery of it and how "at home" items were used to relate to "lumberjack" items/the Paul Bunyan story. However, I wasn't a huge fan of actual tools and lumber or an actual living ox being given to the baby at the end. It would have been nice to continue the follow through with everyday household items/toys in lieu of actual tools. The story also got a bit disjointed. I understand it is describing how a baby can be fussy at bedtime/naptime. But the resolution of the baby being able to settle never really occurred. The artwork was adorable. With a few slight tweaks I think this would be a really fun and well loved book.

I received and ARC of this book through Netgally in exchange for an honest review.

I get that this is an attempted retelling of Paul Bunyun. I do. But there is something about ending a book with a baby in his bedroom alone at night with sharp hand tools, wooden logs, and an ox that doesn't sit well. Have you ever known a child that would translate that as a good thing for them to do? A preschooler that would take that as permission, even encouragement, to take the use of a handsaw into his own hands? I have. I have birth to a few of them. For that reason, I have to pass on this one.

This illustrations are really cute and the rhyming has a decent cadence.

This sprightly verse book shows a young kid who just cannot get off to sleep, and wants this and that and the other before he's even nearly ready for bed. The thing is, his parents can't work out what those things are – but we've kind of been told, through the name of the book, the plaid endpapers and more. It's the usual thing of a kid who needs something quite specialist to keep his mind occupied enough to tire him out, but done to a humorous extreme and done well – I don't believe the note in my proof about the artwork not being final, either, for that too is full of charm and character. And you know what? For dropping the hints and word-play into the verse, which comes at us just a couplet per spread in fine easy-to-read form, I think this book proves that it went further than it needed to to be complete. And that makes it a five-star achievement in my estimation.

This was cute, but I found it to be encouraging of loud behaviors. I know it's just a story, but kids want to do what they see.

Lumber Baby is such a cute book. My son and I loved the fun, lyrical text.

The illustrations are fun and engaging. I enjoyed the addition of the blue ox in the crib. My son thought that was hilarious. The page at the end about “sawing logs” was very cute too.

Overall, this is a fun, original children's book that would make a great addition to any kiddos bookshelf!

Very cute and funny story with lovely illustrations. A little bit shocking with the pretty dangerous and destructive activities the baby ends up doing throughout the book, but I imagine the target audience will just find it silly and not actually be encouraged to do any of the things depicted.

A cute book with a few flaws.

Lumber Baby works all day, but won't go to sleep! Can his big sister figure out what's wrong? I really loved the illustrations in this book. The digitally-rendered art style is very modern and creates a whimsical atmosphere. However, while I enjoyed the first half of the book immensely, the ending and solution to Lumber Baby's fussiness struck me as a bit too silly. Of course I understand that this is a book for children, but I thought going in that the message would be about taking time to reflect or calm down at night, rather than giving the baby an actual saw. While I get the joke, I'm just not sure this is a polished story.

Thank you, Kind World Publishing, for the advance reading copy.

This story will be quite relatable not only to the parents of toddlers but also everyone who are familiar with how difficult it is put kids this age to go to sleep especially when they get active and do not want to sleep when everyone else is dead tired.

Love the illustrations so much. However, the last page shook me. You will know why.

A silly yet fun story about Lumber Baby, the youngest in the house. The family is unable to sleep or even rest, due to Lumber Baby's ruckus. But his elder sister finally comes up with a good idea to save the family some sleep.

I overall enjoyed reading through this book and I'm very sure that kids would definitely cherish this story.

Lumber Baby was a unique take on a baby not giving his family any rest! Lumber Baby can't be soothed by any number of distractions his family tries. The illustrations were really cute, I loved the little Blue Ox!
