Time Travel. Serial Killer. Light Moments for Laughter. Kick-Ass Female.

I loved, loved, loved this book! I am always a sucker for time travel. I enjoy imagining how someone from present day adapts to living in a historical period. With this book, I got everything I wanted. It’s going to be a series, and I am already trying to get my hands on book two!

Mallory is a homicide detective in 2019. When she steps into an alley to investigate a scream, she finds herself being strangled. When she wakes up, she’s in 1869 in the body of Catriona, a housemaid for Dr. Gray.

This story gives Mallory an opportunity to feign memory loss due to a head injury, which gives her time to find out how to act in this new body and time period. I enjoyed this idea, and I liked that over time, she finds ways to acclimate, and uses the excuse less. One of my favorite things was seeing how she navigated the wording. She’d use a word, see a reaction, and try for something that would have been more likely to be used. Little moments like this made me giggle!

There are great characters who create friendships, allies, and red herrings. I loved them all. My favorite character besides Mallory was Dr. Gray’s sister. Their friendship is fantastic, and it’s something I’m looking forward to seeing evolve in the second book.

Overall, I thought this was a fantastic read. I loved the story and the characters. The investigative moments were awesome, and I loved how Mallory partners with different characters to solve the murders. I would highly recommend this for readers that enjoy time-travel and murder mysteries!

A mild and comforting mystery including time travel and a victorian murder investigation. Mild Sherlock Holmes vibes.

Our main character is thrown back in time and placed in the life of a troublesome young maid. As if time travel doesn’t have its own hurdles, this story offers up so much more.

I enjoyed the characters and their consistency and the effects each one had on the story line. This story was not predictable for me at all and I enjoyed that part most and this was shown all throughout the story.

I would recommend this to readers who enjoys forensics, murder mysteries, and or time travel. If you liked Outlander this is may be a similar read for you.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had elements of most of my favorite genres, time travel, historical fiction, crime and drama. .

Mallory, detective from 2019, investigates noises coming from a dark alley, upon awakening she finds herself in 1869 in another body. Her struggles to adapt to living in a different time and body without giving herself away show us just how everything has changed since then. Mallory's struggle to find a way home and catch a murderer keep the reader intrigued. I look forward to next next part of the story.

Wonderful start of a series! I didn't realize it was a series until I was like halfway through, so what I suspected was a Weeping Angels situation became a possible Quantum Leap scenario. There were many moving parts and layers, very intriguing all the way through. Mallory's learning curve of how to speak and what slang is era and region appropriate was super fun to read. Isla is a hoot, hopefully in future installments we'll get more of her, Duncan, and Hugh's dynamic. I'm excited for the evolution of the core and the setting for the series :)

I was glad that I chose to listen to this audiobook! A perfect combination of historical fiction, mystery and suspense with a spunky female main character all wrapped up in one. I loved how Mallory used her knowledge as a modern day homicide detective to help solve the murder and find the killer. It was a pleasure to find out this would be a new series and I can't wait to get the next book! It is the perfect new series for those readers that are fond of the Outlander books. Thank you to NetGally and Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook copy.

#ARipThroughTime: ⁣

Initial thoughts: Listen, if there’s anyone that will get me to read historical fiction, it has to be Kelley Armstrong. ⁣

Review: KELLLLLLLEYYYYYYYYY!!!! I really thought this would be good, but hot dog, not THIS good. I finished this in about 24 hours and wanted to the next book in the series. (This is book 1, and it’s not even out yet) There were so many different directions this could have gone, and I’m so glad it went exactly the way it did.⁣

I really found it interesting how Mallory kept referencing how she had to change her vocabulary to reflect the era. Also, she kept expanding how she kept reaching for her phone, to find it not there. It really made me realize how much I actually use my phone. Flashlight? Phone. Measuring tape? Phone. Notes to write my thoughts down (like this review).. phone. The vocabulary mentions kind of seemed redundant, but at the same time, I had no ideas some phrases were as new age as they are now, so clearly I’d be labeled as a witch if I traveled back in time. I did like that there were discussions of things she wished she could say would change in the future, and still haven’t. It made me reflect as to why things STILL haven’t changed. ⁣

The audio was phenomenal. Kate Handford knocked it out of the park with the accents and the snark. I thought the sarcasm hit perfectly and really amplified Mallory’s personality. ⁣

The mystery itself was wild as all get out. I did not guess the killer, but I also didn’t really.. try? I just enjoyed the audio and loved every interaction and story.⁣

Thank you so much @minotaur_books and @macmillan.audio for the gifted copy. Another 5 🏃‍♀️ from Kelley Armstrong. A Rip Through Time is out 5/31!

Reading this i discovered time travel books don't necessarily work for me. I did however love the setting and the historical fiction and the mystery aspect of the book. The characters and atmosphere were well done, but not my favorite book by the author

This book reminds me of the A Murder in Time series but much better.

When homicide detective Mallory’s attacked in a dark alley in Edinburgh, she wakes up in 1869 in the body of a servant. Fortunately for her, her boss is also a medical examiner, and she can use her detective skills to catch a killer.

Mallory has a good head on her shoulders and is very good at going with the flow. I’ve read Kelley Armstrong’s previous time travel book and was disappointed, so I’m glad that writing murder mysteries brings out the best in her. I'm hoping that this will be a series.

The audiobook was fun with the different accents.

Intriguing story, that will keep you guessing and a cliffhanger that says ….. more please! It’s a story of travel time from 2019 to 1869. Murder mystery, who done it, adjusting to the 1869 but keeping your identity secret that you are from the future, plus trying the solve the problem of returning to your time. It’s has it all! Mallory is a detective on leave in Edinburgh, Scotland at the bedside of her dying grandmother. Needing a break she jogs through the streets near the hospital. Hearing cries of a women the cop in her goes to investigate and there things goes terribly wrong! Waking up in a different place, wearing different clothes and trying to figure out what happened and how Malloy, now Catriona is in a different body. Thankfully she is employed as a housemaid and does have a roof over her her, but her boss Dr, Gray is a undertaker and a sometime medical examiner, which draws in Malloy/ Catriona into helping him solve a murder mystery that may also solve her dilemma.
Love the characters and the narrator was excellent, she held my interest and did wonderful with the story telling. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #ARipThroughTime #MacmillanAudio

I have always enjoyed anything written by Kelley Armstrong! I am a huge fan! However, this was my first audiobook of hers; and it sure did not disappoint!

I love the idea of time travel and even more so when you have someone stuck in another person's body. What would you do if you suddenly became someone else in a different time period. There are no flushable toilets, no electricity, no cell phones… How would you survive?

This sure did make me think about how I would likely NOT survive! Well I could… But it sure would be a challenge. Mallory, a modern day detective, finds herself in a dark alley in Edinburgh while she is visiting her dying grandmother… but she is not alone! After an event, she finds herself stuck in a housemaid's body 150 years earlier who also experienced a similar event. A Rip Through Time does a fantastic job at peaking interest and holding it. While the detective tries to act like a housemaid, she is also trying to solve a crime and find a way back home… this book is jam packed full of challenges and adventure!

Mallory, a homicide detective, is spending time in Edinburgh to be by the side of her dying grandmother. When she goes for a jog to clear her head she hears a woman’s scream in an alley, goes to investigate, and is attacked. She wakes up 150 years in the past in someone else’s body. While in this time, she needs to investigate to find out what happen and how to get back to 2019.

I completely loved this compelling and truly interesting book. I am usually not into historical fiction, but the synopsis drew me in. A murder mystery and time travel? You had me at the first sentence! The atmosphere and characters of the book kept me intrigued and I did not figure out the killer until the very end along with Mallory. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Kate Hanford’s narration of the book was captivating. She easily switched from accents and it greatly helped with the atmosphere of the book.

I want to thank NetGalley, Kelley Armstrong and Macmillan Audio for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.

Part murder mystery, part time travel fantasy, set in Victorian era Edinburgh, Scotland, what's not to love? I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The narrator of the audio version did an excellent job. The characters were relatable and the storyline was imaginative and fun, with lots of twists and turns throughout. I loved the whip-smart, sassy, and brave Mallory. I'd be interested to know what Catriona is experiencing in Mallory's time as well. Maybe that will be covered in one of the sequels? I definitely want to know what happens next!

I had no expectations for A Rip Through Time. The amateurish cover suggested it might have an unpolished, indie feel to it. I am pleased to report that couldn't be farther from the truth. This was a compelling and exciting adventure. I give it five enthusiastic stars.

In a nutshell, a present day Canadian police detective, Mallory Atkinson, is attacked by a man she accidentally spilled coffee on earlier in the day. When she awakens, she finds herself in the body of a housemaid in 1869 Edinburgh working for a Mr. Duncan Gray, an undertaker who fancies himself more of a forensic scientist, even though such a job doesn't quite have a name yet. Incredibly the author skillfully makes this coincidence work.

I couldn't stop reading, and kept finding ways to sneak in a little more, because it was such a fascinating slow burn. The world building for the time period, the character development, and the mystery were all excellently put together into something simply exhilarating.

I'm especially excited to know this is the start of a series. Sign me up for all the rest!

May 20, 2019: Mallory, a homicide detective has traveled to Edinburgh to spend time with her dying grandmother. She hears a woman in distress in an alley and goes to investigate, is attacked, and wakes up in the wrong time and in the wrong body.

May 20, 1869: Catriona Mitchell, a housemaid, is enjoying her half day off when she is attacked in an alley way 150 years before Mallory is attacked. Catriona was strangled and left for dead.

Mallory wakes up in Catriola's body and what a shock that is. She is in the wrong time, there are customs and sayings she is not familiar with. She is being called a stranger's name and expected to get back to work. So, you were strangled big deal, there is a chamber pot that needs cleaning. Her employer, Dr. Gray, moonlights as a medical examiner. Women have been killed and he begins to investigate their murders.

Wanting to get back to her own time and having her interest piqued, Mallory begins her own investigation while navigating a world and class system she has only read about.

So good! This was a pleasure from beginning to end. I was drawn into this book from the very beginning. I kept fining opportunities to listen more and more and finished this in two days. I found the story to be gripping, intelligent, and entertaining. While reading this book, I thought of the Christopher Reeve movie Somewhere in Time. Very different storylines but with a character going back in time.

I cannot believe that I have not read a book by Kelly Armstrong before. Seriously, what rock have I been hiding under. I am not typically a fantasy fan but this was more historical fiction meets science fiction and the mash up was done beautifully.

I can't wait for the next book in the series. What a captivating page turner with suspense and intrigue! So happy I took a chance on this book.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong
Time travel mystery.
Detective Mallory hears a cry and finds a half transparent women being strangled in the alley. As she attempts to help she finds herself fighting with the attacker and blacks out as he attempts to strangles her. She wakes up 150 years in the past in the body of a young house maid who has also been attacked.

Suspenseful, intriguing and engrossing. The author pulls on heartstrings at the same time as describing roles in society. We feel Mallory’s frustration with the limitations of being trapped in the voluminous skirts while hunting for hidden killer.
The mystery is solid and smart and I’m excited to read the next in the series.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Kate Hanford. The performance was engaging and told from the Detective’s POV. Emotions were clear and held the listener captive with anticipation of what would happen next. I listened to this at 1.3 which is my preferred speed for conversational compatibility.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Macmillan audio. I also purchased a copy to keep.

A Rip Through Time is the first book in a series and I'm very intrigued by it, maybe especially intrigued because I have zero idea where the series will go from here. I don't want to say much, about the overall plot itself because it is an excellent mystery (in my opinion), but this book sets up a cast of characters so clearly established in the past that I'm curious how the time traveling element will continue to apply in future books. Regardless, this book was so incredibly atmospheric that I was beyond anxious at certain points and stayed up just a littttle too late to read it. I really was fully absorbed and utterly invested in this mystery.

Essentially, A Rip Through Time follows Mallory as she and Catriona are strangled in the same spot 150 years apart and then Mallory falls back in time and finds herself inhabiting Catriona's life. Mallory, in the present, is a police detective from Canada, and so she can't quite help being fascinated by her new boss and his interest in forensic science and also the mystery of this wild murder. Mallory wants to get back to the future, but it turns out making that happen isn't as "easy" as it seems in the movies. Nor is it easy to inhabit the life of a housemaid with a sketchy past.

What I personally loved about this book is the friendship that develops between Mallory and Isla, the lady of the house and Dr. Duncan Grey's widowed sister. I really liked the way their relationship develops and I think it adds depth to what I'm really hoping is the slow burn romance to come with Mallory and Duncan. And if one happens to (re?)develop between Isla and Detective McCreadie, I certainly wouldn't complain. I also really appreciated the atmosphere of this book and how well done the mystery was. I remember realizing that there was an unresolved thread that I wish had come together a bit more, but tbh, it's been a couple of days and I can't remember that part. I only remember how much I enjoyed it.

Final note, I was able to listen to an early review copy thanks to Netgalley, and I really enjoyed the narration! Kate Hanford did a good job (to this American reader's ears) with the Scottish accent. I think she contributed significantly to the overall atmosphere of my reading experience and I'm grateful for that. Anyway, thanks so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced review copy!

I went into this book with the wrong idea of what it was and I am glad because what it turned out to be was so much better. Before I get further let me thank #NetGalley the publisher Macmillan Audio and author Kelley Armstrong for allowing me an advanced reader copy of this audio-book in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this would be a time travel romance book where the would be a predictable love triangle and lots of swooning etc.. Its not that at all. The lead is a 30 year old homicide detective who ends up falling through a rift in time, this is not explained there is no science here trying to explain the time travel which is fine. It is called a rip through time after all so I did not expect her to have invented a time machine.

What it actually is turns out to be a pretty good murder mystery mixed with some time travel and in a setting with a group of rich well developed characters. The story moves well and really kept me interested from opening to close. The last hour or so really surprised me not because of some did not see it coming twist but because of how well thought out the end of the book was from the writer. It definitely leaves the world open for a sequel which is good because I loved this book and want to read the next one as soon as possible. I never felt at any time in the story that events were forced, like this only happened because she needed it to happen to move the story along, I have been so frustrated with so many books where they do something completely out of character of the protagonist just to move the story along and this avoids that trap completely.

The narration was also absolutely top notch. Kate Handford did such a good job that I now plan on finding other books narrated by her as I have found that to be an effective way of finding new authors by just searching other stories narrated by the best narrators. It looks like she has a decent selection of books that she has already narrated in the past and I am looking forward to listening to more from her. I will also be reading more from Kelley Armstrong!
