By Strangers Mourned is a book in the Sheriff Tilghman Mystery series by J. R. Lindermuth. This book is set in rural Pennsylvania in the spring of 1899. In this installment an unknown naked woman is found drowned in a local creek. As Sheriff Tilghman investigates, he is drawn into the world of immigration and human trafficking and ultimately involves law enforcement from a number of different towns in the area to both track down the killer and determine the identity of the victim.

After having read the previous book in this series, I was familiar with the majority of the characters involved in the story. Once again, the author has done a good job of developing his characters and their backstory. This installment did a better job of moving the story along with less focus on the mundane everyday activities but again the culprit was revealed early on in the story and much of the remainder was devoted to trying to track him down and bring him to justice. Unfortunately, I found this installment to be a bit on the dark side to be a true cozy mystery.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Sunbury Press and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Princess Fuzzypants here: it is 1899 and when the naked body of a young woman, a stranger, is discovered in a creek, it is up to Syl to investigate. While he tries to find out who she is, he must also keep watch on the various goings on amongst the citizen of the town. And there are some shenanigans that could get out of hand.

But it is the tragedy of the young woman who turns out to be an immigrant looking for a better life that is the heart of the story. She seems to have found that life and then she and her sister, like many other immigrant women fell prey to some despicable predators. They book is interesting and a quick read.

Four purrs and two paws up.

I read this book really quickly, it was a gripping read with a good amount of mystery, suspense and small town community. A great read for fans of true mystery reads.
