Buffy Silverman has spent a lot of time and (digital) film capturing autumn imagery, and here collects it, along with a simple little poem to tie it all together. The images are lush, and I especially love the close-ups of insects and reptiles. Even a spider, something VERY scary for my kid, was rendered cute and nonthreatening by Silverman's lens.

The book is mostly focused on an North-Eastern United States setting (as we see sumacs, otters, moose, and wooly bear caterpillars), but plenty of the image are, if not nationwide (I'm from the Western seaboard, I have not seen that many red leaves that weren't red from fire EVER), then at least depicted enough in pop culture to be recognizable. If you're from a region with a different-looking autumn, this could be a good way to bring up how the season looks different where you live.

The book ends with a LENGTHY text section, explaining most of the lines, as well as a glossary. This does give some educational quality to the book, but it is probably best used in actual nature. Read this section ahead and then bring this book along on a walk. When you see something covered in the book, you can bring it out to help your little one connect the story to nature.

Remember On A Snow-Melting Day: Seeking Signs of Spring? Buffy Silverman is giving us another wonderfully poetic look at a season, this time, it's On A Gold-Blooming Day: Finding Fall Treasures which will be out on September 6th. I was thrilled when Buffy sent an advanced copy, wishing I could be in a classroom of younger students, starting them off with this book's challenge to search all through these coming weeks into September, for those "treasures" of fall that Buffy shares.
Buffy, along with other photographers, shows beautiful photos and clever brief poems that celebrate fall in a special "leaf-peeping" way. Pages include "leaf-lunching' by a moose and "hole-digging" by a squirrel. Plants and animals "lift" and "drift", "rattle" and "skedaddle". The action shown cannot be ignored on any page, inviting searches during the beginning weeks of school, or at home with children, and perhaps with journals for recording each discovery.
In the backmatter, Buffy takes time to explain the actions that are shown in the book, like "crickets chirp" and "mushrooms pop", and adds a glossary and a list for further reading.
It's a don't-miss book for fall, inspirational to see, then do some of one's own searching on those "gold-blooming" days!

A wonderful book showcasing all the special things that can be found on a bright and shiny fall day. The photographs are stunning. The words are simple, allowing the reader to absorb the majesty of the outside world. The scenery is captured so magnificently within these pages. A description of phrases such as “snakes glide” follows. It also contains additional references and a glossary.

I received an ARC from Millbrook Press through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.

Beautiful rhyming verse, full of autumn imagery.

Lush, gorgeous photographs that draw the reader into the heart of nature.

"On a frog-leaping,
Log-sleeping,
Goose-honking day...
Cattails sway,
Otters play"

No matter where you live, this book will help you experience autumn wildlife. Even if you're surrounded by desert or snow, or live in a big city where nature experiences are scarce.

The wildlife flora and fauna in the book are found in the United States, in the midwest and northeast regions. Whether this is where you live, or a place that's new to you, this gorgeous book is the perfect way to experience a fall visit. Have you ever wanted to dive into a pile of fall leaves? Pick apples or pumpkins? Watch a fall rainstorm roll in? It's here in these pages, ablaze with color.

The end of the book offers some great info about each of the scenes in the book, from apples to woodpeckers.

This book is perfect for fall and would be great followed by a nature hike in the woods discovering all the changes happening in the fall. The photographs are beautiful and the rhyming is fun. The information in the back of the book was a great addition.
