A great and very usable baking cookbook from one of the masters of baking. The recipes that are included seem doable, with ingredients and tools your average home baker would likely have in their kitchen. Have considered purchasing this for my own kitchen because of the depth and breadth of recipes.

I am not a huge fan of Paul Hollywood's treatment of people on Bake-Off, but the man does know how to bake! The recipes are nicely laid out with clear instructions and accompanying photos

Cakes, breads, cheesecakes, cookies, scones, pizzas and many other decadent eats from around the world fill this book beginning to end. Baked by Paul Hollywood combines the author's travels and restaurant experiences with traditions learned growing up that he translates into delicious baked goods.

The snippets provided for each recipe are helpful, but I really enjoyed the ones where he shares how baked goods remind him of his childhood favorites.

Many recipes would be considered classics in household across the globe and the way he incorporates recipes with a global appeal makes his version worth trying.

The snippet about key lime pie and baking it in Miami using local key limes reminded me of the first time I had the real deal. The addition of the lime meringue pie recipe adds a different twist on the lemon version that makes me want to bake both.

This book comes across as a tribute to the author’s love of baking and the recipes from breads to dessert showcases his ability to translate years of experience into recipes and steps you can successfully bake in your own kitchen.

This is a fantastic cookbook! Paul Hollywood is one of the best known and most talented bakers of our time, and his recipes show you exactly what to do.

I’m especially interested in trying the bread recipes, because he is a particular expert on that subject. There are excellent dessert recipes as well. I’m definitely buying this cookbook! 5 stars.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA, Bloomsbury Publishing for an ARC copy of Bake in exchange for an honest review.

The Great British Baking show judge and baker extraordinaire, Paul Hollywood, has released a new cookbook full of his take on a variety of classic recipes. This cookbook delves into a wide range of bakes from the sweet to the savory, Danishes to doughnuts to soufflés and of course Hollywood's signature breads. Each recipe has easy to follow instructions and some include extra tips and tricks to make the tougher recipes look like they were made from a pro. The photography is beautiful and will make the most novice baker want to get their hands dirty. This is a great cookbook to add to the home bakers collection.

Bake: My Best Ever Recipes for the Classics consists of great recipes and colorful photographs to inspire readers. I appreciate that the instructions have the conversion for those who know tablespoons instead of grams, as I do not enjoy having to look up the equivalents when making a recipe from someone using the metric system. There is a great introduction, with tips for successful baking, great instruction on bread baking, and overall hints.

The recipes are divided into logical sections, which I have listed below with some of the standout dishes.

Cakes: Chocolate Orange Banana Bread; Chocolate Hazelnut Torte; Lemon Drizzle Cake

Cookies and Scones: Almond and Orange Bisscotti; Chocolate Macarons; Scones

Breads and Flatbreads: Ciabatta; Baguettes; Seeded Sandwich Bread; Hot Cross Buns

Pizza and Doughnuts: Pizza Dough; Garlic and Mushroom Pizza; Creamed Jelly Doughnuts

Pastry and Pies: Thai Chicken Pie; Meat and Potato Hand Pies; Beef Empanadas

Desserts: Sticky Toffee Pudding; Baked Alaska; White Chocolate and Raspberry Bread Pudding; Lemon Tartlets

Overall, those who are familiar with Paul Hollywood can be confident in knowing that this cookbook has a level of proficiency and an attention to detail. Bake is an inspiring cookbook and one that I would recommend to others.

My mom and I adored this book. We’re both huge bake off fans and always try to replicate things we see on the show. This was a treat through and through!

I trust Paul Hollywood to show me how to make the best and he does a fantastic job in his latest cookbook. Gorgeous photos, including detailed step by step photos. Easy to understand instructions and so many amazing recipes that I want to make today, like right now. Where to begin??!!

A confession--I have over 500 cookbooks, with an entire shelf dedicated to the Great British Baking Show (GBBO for those in the UK and elsewhere). So, can I recommend Paul Hollywood's latest book, Bake, to both new bakers and long-time bakers?

Of course! Hollywood gives us a tour of Britain and Cyprus and the types of bakes we've viewed over the past seasons. Still, all are Hollywood's variations on a theme--even the Lemon Drizzle, a cake that needs a place in anyone's baking repertoire, is Hollywood's bake.

All recipes include weight and volume measurements and ingredients that can be found at a supermarket or through a specialty vendor (yes, there is mastic!), and most importantly, the recipes work! This baking book is meant to be used, not merely paged through. New bakers will find the directions easy to follow--remember the admonition from GBBO that if you follow the directions, you'll have a successful bake--while the more experienced bakers will be able to extend their own repertoire and perhaps find a type of baked good that they haven't tried before.

No matter what level of baker you are, you'll want to add Bake to your baking bookshelf!

Highly recommended: 5/5 stars

Fans of The Great British Bake-Off know him from his steely gaze, his hearty handshake, and his cutting critiques of the bakers, but Paul Hollywood comes by his baking knowledge through old fashioned experience. His father had a bakery, so he was learning how to bake at a time in life when most of us were still out riding bikes or doing homework. He has traveled and learned pastry all over the world, and he has put all his decades of knowledge into Bake.

Hollywood has subtitled this My Best Ever Recipes for the Classics, and that’s exactly what this is. It’s tried and true recipes for (mostly British) classic desserts and breads. These are his favorite recipes. You can tell just by how he talks about them. But there’s also how he talks about baking in general. He sees it as a way to give to others, to bring joy, to be creative, and to connect with cultures all over the world.

Throughout the cookbook, there are some recipes or techniques that get a series of photos to help newer bakers see exactly how to do something, or how the bake is supposed to look throughout the recipe steps. The key steps for bread-making get this treatment, as well as the Victoria Sandwich Cake, Almond and Orange Biscotti, The Ultimate Focaccia, Pizza Margharita, Creamed Jelly Doughnut, Croissants, and Chocolate Soufflés, among others.

There are chapters for classic bakes, like Cakes, Cookies and Scones, Breads and Flatbreads, Pastry and Pies, and Desserts. And then there is the chapter of Pizza and Doughnuts. Hollywood said that’s his favorite meal, so he dedicated an entire chapter to recipes for his favorite pizza and for doughnuts. I’m not complaining, since those are both excellent food groups, but I can’t say I’ve seen them in a chapter together before.

The recipes include just about anything you’d want to bake or eat, from classics like a Lemon Drizzle Cake, Blueberry Muffins, Classic Scones (the Queen Mother said they were the best scones she’d ever had), Shortbread, Baguettes, Chocolate Doughnuts, Pigs in Blankets, and Barry Pavlova as well as more complicated treats like Lime Macarons, Sourdough (including instructions for making your own starter), Hand-Raised Sunday Lunch Pie, Baked Alaska, and Chocolate and Raspberry Entremets.

Basically Bake is a master class in British baking. It’s the best of Hollywood’s experience captured in recipes and gorgeous photographs. If you ever wanted to know what the chefs on The Great British Bake Off learn in a season, then bake your way through this book. It will get you there. A lot of bakers learn what they know from parents or grandparents; they just grow up around baking and absorb the information through the years. For those of us who didn’t get that kind of opportunity, this book is exactly that kind of mentorship.

I thought Bake was a beautiful cookbook. I’ve been a big fan of the Bake Off for years, and I have several other cookbooks from the chefs involved and from the series. They’re good, but I have yet to see one like this from the franchise. Even Hollywood’s other cookbooks, while excellent, don’t feel like this sort of master class in baking. The insights he shares with these recipes, and all the beautiful photos that help guide me when I’m baking, make me feel like this is a must-have cookbook to keep in my collection for a very long time, or until I’ve got all the pages stuck together or dripped with chocolate and find that I need a new copy.

Egalleys for Bake were provided by Bloomsbury USA through NetGalley, with many thanks, but I loved that early copy so much I pre-ordered a hardcover copy for myself.

Paul Hollywood bakes...

With a hefty dose of flour, a significant splash of olive oil, Paul Hollywood bakes the classics.
The recipes are familiar and favorites. What I did like was that the recipes were simplistic and called for the finest of ingredients. I could really get on board with quality over quantity. Loved the Victoria Sandwich cake and the focaccia (i need to use way more olive oil).
Recommend.

This is not my first Paul Hollywood’s baking cookbook. I am a fan of Paul on the TV series The Great British Bake Off so I was excited to have the opportunity to review his latest book: BAKE - My Best Ever Recipes for the Classics.

Well, I was not disappointed! In order to write this review, I had to take out his other books to compare how he presented these classics. The new book is very well thought out, includes lots of appetizing recipe pictures and technical steps to help you along the way.

Paul may come across as intimidating when he judges bakes from contestants on the show. But, I like to think that it’s because of his extensive baking knowledge and experience (and maybe a bit of arrogance that I came to enjoy as a viewer).

For those home bakers who already have other baking cookbooks, I trust there will be something new for you to learn and try in this latest book

Paul proves that there are infinite ways to vary a bake based on ingredients, presentation and imagination. Happy Baking!

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been baking for years, and though many of these recipes are familiar to what I grew up making, they are just that little bit better. If you’ve ever baked with recipes attempting to adjust for allergies or sensitivities, inevitably you try to substitute something small. In this case, I really appreciate when the recipe is marked with a “do not substitute” warning- so you know better. I look forward to using some of these recipes as my new go- tos.

This is an easy to follow cookbook with great pictures. Normally I don't like his books but this one was the exception so I will be using this for my cookbook club and our library will be buying multi copies of it.

Bake is packed full of recipes created by one skilled and reputable baker. A quick flip through this book and you will begin salivating with all the gorgeous pictures! I was really impressed with the variety of recipes contained within. No, this is not only for desert. There are plenty of savory recipes to choose from as well, including meat pies and an assortment of bread (my favorite section). Instructions are clearly laid out and can make even an unexperienced baker a success. There are a lot of recipes provided here, suitable to all tastes. I tip my hat to Paul Hollywood.
