Thank you to NetGalley and Ad Lib Publishers for the arc of this book by Moira Martingale.

5 stars- such an interesting read about killers some who include: Jeffrey Dahmer, Austin Harrouff (Florida), John Johnson (Montana), Hamilton Albert Fish, the 'Brooklyn Vampire', Richard Chase, the 'Vampire of Sacramento' and Luka Magnotta, the Canadian killer whose true story inspired Netflix's 'Don't F*ck with Cats

A good little book that delves deep into it’s subject matter, I found it scary but fascinating also and really enjoyed it tho felt guilty for doing so 😂

This was way more fascinating than it should have been. I was deep in a true crime phase when I got this free epub and devoured it whole, so I can't really say why it took me so long to review it. Moira Martingale picked an excellent assortment of cases and I enjoyed her writing style and way of narration. I think it's always a morbid sense of curiosity (that does not belong in polite society) that makes me read about true crime cases, but nevertheless, those involving cannibal cases are, of course, particulary gruesome and have to be handled more delicately. Martingale manages to do exactly that. Definitely a recommendation for all true crime enthusiast!

This was actually a Did not finish for me.
I found this book very bitty, jumping from bit to bit, not easy to follow and although the subject is gruesome, there were no interesting parts, I found this boring and sadly could not continue with it

I was unable to finish this title, most likely due to the heaviness of the content. I would have liked to see sources cited.

An engaging non-fiction that was well r4esearched. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.

This review is for an updated version of this book; the original was published in 1994.

Before reading this I truly had no idea how many cannibalistic killers there were. The layout of this gives you specifics and history in the first half and statistics and psychology of serial killers in the second half. The subject matter is difficult to handle at times, but the author handles it very well presenting it in an easy-to-follow format. The writing is not full of unnecessary information and reads fluidly.

This wasn't an easy read, but I definitely feel more educated on the topic now. Truth is more terrifying than fiction and this book definitely reminds you of that.

This book was very interesting and you could tell that Moira Mortingale put a lot of research into it. I loved the history that was included and the fact that it covered many cannibal killers instead of just the few well known ones.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first book on cannibal killers by this author years ago and found it sickeningly interesting. This second book is filled with new facts and cases and is just as fascinating.

I saw this book and knew I was going to read it! It's one of those topics that is so taboo no one really speaks about it. When I was reading this book I was both fascinated and disgusted at the same time. I wanted to read but I didn't at the same time. This had some fascinating history such as the Shi Hu court in North China would cook and eat Harem girls at banquets because they looked good to eat.
This book talks about the 1972 Andes plane crash with 45 passengers, the conditions were dire with no food and freezing temperatures. Some survivors ate the dead to survive, others that couldn't bring themselves to eat human flesh died. I had a discussion with some people asking them if they would eat another person to survive and it was a varied response. However, this book does take a more sinister turn and discusses some of the most famous cannibals that existed and the most recent German Armin Meiwes that butchered and ate a man after posting an ad on the dark web for a person willing to be eaten.
This author talks about how rare cannibalism was and how due to the internet people can communicate with others like themselves and explore fantasies, Armin Meiwes claimed that there were over 800 cannibals in Germany at the time of his trial.
This was so interesting but nauseating at the same time. This won't be for everyone and if you have problems with blood, flesh, murder, and other gruesome things...then don't read this book.

Extremely interesting bordering on disturbing. Martingale spares not one detail in her study of cannibalistic murderers. As someone with an interest in true crime, for better or for worse, I couldn't stop reading. Definitely not an enjoyable read, but you can tell lots of research went into not only the crimes, but also the backgrounds of these killers. There was a smattering of analysis of what can be done in the future to prevent these things from happening, but it wasn't the focus of the book.

Fans of serial killer books will (pun intended) eat this up. While it's proper to sit with pearls clutched about the horrific crimes of real murders in this book, the American fascination with gore and mayhem is tried and true. Definitely worth a read if you're into the subject matter.

Cannibal Killers Review!

True crime fans, this is where it is at! I always love reading about serial killers, but cannibal killers is an even more twisted kind of killer. Cannibal Killers was a 4/5 ⭐️ for me. I cruised through the first 2/3 of this book. Martingale gave gory and graphic details of so many cannibals that I have never even heard of before! The last third was a bit dry, more of the science of why people turn to cannibalism. There was also political parts about abortion and Trump that I did not really feel were necessary when it came to killers who resort to cannibalism. 😅 Other than that, a great true crime book that I learned a lot from!

A very interesting read - Martingale gave enough description of each killer without being overdramatic or drawing it out for so long that it became longwinded.

Isn't it fascinating? How the mind of a cannibal works? What is it exactly that makes him devour raw human meat? Well I always was fascinated with this concept. And when I spotted this book, I promptly went ahead and requested for it. After I picked up this book to read, I was mind-blowned. Such well researched and detailed book. And at parts very graphic so you need to have a strong stomach. An absolute amazing book.

Cannibalism! I can’t even! This book really taught me a lot about cannibalism and those who practice it! It’s truly morbid. This was well written and gave me good insight into the topic and crime.

What a fascinating book! Not for the faint hearted given the subject but really interesting look into the world of killers with a certain appetite! Really enjoyed dipping in and out of this book. The research that has gone into it made it truly horrific in a good way!

Cannibal Killers is a 2022 updated version of this 1994 book. I have previously read a cannibal killers book (not by the same author) but it lost my interest as it wasn’t well written. However this book even though it was quite long kept my attention all the way through and at times I had to force myself to put it down!!

It was very well written, jam packed with facts and cases not just the theories behind the phenomenon and also well presented so that the book flows very well and it does not jump backwards and forwards between cases. I am a true crime enthusiast but I found cases in this book I had never heard of and ‘enjoyed’ the section on Luka Magnotta revealing parts of the case I either didn’t notice in the Netflix documentary or were excluded.

One of the things I liked the most is there are both very well documented cases going back through history and some lesser known crimes and each one is given as much time and analysis rather than the focus being on just the ‘famous’ cases. I also was surprised to find out some details on the popular killers that I had not previously read in other books

In conclusion if you are a true crime enthusiast like me it would be a very good investment of your time to read this book! You won’t be disappointed, I definitely feel more knowledgeable on the subject and is a great mix between an educational textbook for scholars of criminology and psychology and a book for true crime addicts!

Morbidly fascinating!

This book gives a detailed account into the history or Vampirism/ Cannibalism whilst mentioning well known killers such as Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer to name a few.

It also talks about the psychological aspects, serial killer profiles, Hollywood influences such as The Silence of the Lambs and how the internet can play a part.

This is a great read for anybody interested in true crime but be warned it does not dilute on the criminal acts and goes into graphic detail!

Thank you Netgalley for my arc!

I like a dose of true crime every once in a while and there is just something about serial killers that intrigues me. Cannibal Killers sounded like an absolutely fascinating read and I've been looking forward to read it. Sadly, it wasn't ment to be... And I ended up having a completely different reading experience instead. I do not mind gruesome or gory (that is what you would expect when you decide to read a book about cannibal killers after all), but for me there was way too much focus on the sexual angle of the crimes. True, part of the cannibal killers do have that motivation, but the constant repetition of the sexual angle AND the sensationalist way it was described really put me off. It felt like this focus was used to attract more readers and make things 'more exciting', while cannibalism alone is a plenty fascinating topic to discuss without resorting to cheap carnival tricks. There was something about the writing style that bothered me considerably as well: it often went between boring and repetitive and way too sensational, and my aversion to the writing style made it really hard to continue reading. I tried skim-reading to see if my reaction to this true crime story would improve, but in the end it was all too off-putting to continue making the effort to keep reading. There is one thing for sure: Cannibal Killers definitely wasn't for me!
