This was such an unusual story but it was interesting and I liked the connection between lust, love and death. The way it was told, as if from a diary entry, was really interesting. I did find some parts very repetitive and wished there would have been more action to the story.

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.

This was a wonderfully eerie read. You could feel things sliding into darkness more and more with each chapter. The narrator was perfect for it as well!

The cover and blurb pulled me in, the writing and plot kept me hooked. Normally with writing as unique and beautiful as The Taxidermist's Lover, I'd switch to reading vs. listening, but the narration of the audiobook was brilliant. Highly recommend for a listen or a read.

The most impressive mark of a horror novel for me is when I can feel myself getting nauseated from the description. When listening to this that happened every other chapter. Polly Hall is a fantastic writer.

The narrator was very well suited for this book. I really enjoyed her inflection and the slight anxiety she put into every word. I was captivated within a few chapters. This book is definitely a dark one. The descriptions of the most mundane things sent shivers down my spine, Hall did a great job of making everything in the characters lives just off enough that the reader is constantly on edge. I really felt so unsettled by the writing that I had limits for what times of the day I could listen to it so I would be able to sleep.

Absolutely check the trigger warnings before picking this up, but I really can not recommend it enough. The audiobook adds a whole other level of spookiness to the story.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

Wowza! I did not see that coming! Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed the narrators voice and it worked really well with the single person storytelling. The story took me a few chapters to get fully enveloped in, but once I did I had to know where it was going. It’s definitely not like most other books I’ve read, and I really appreciated that! If your into quirky with a touch of horror and fantasy, this is the book for you!

Picked this one up basically just to see what it was about on behalf of my book club. The cover, the title, the description someone in our book club had to see what this was about and that somebody was me.

This book is A LOT. It is dark, it is sexual, it is bizarre. It made my stomach turn on several occasions and yet it kept me reading. It most certainly kept me entertained.

The writing was so incredibly atmospheric and descriptive. At times almost too descriptive.

Pick this one up if you like stories of passion with a side of taxidermied hybrid creations. Or if you just want to go way outside your comfort zone for a bizarrely entertaining read.

Do take heed there is a dark trigger for miscarriage

Thank you #NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I don’t know how to begin this review. This book was not for me. I gave it three stars for originality, but I did not enjoy it. Now, I’m not saying it’s not a good book, it was well written. The author was able to keep the reader in a constant state of unease and feeling like things were off. I had trouble with the animal parts. I really should’ve suspected considering it’s about taxidermy, but I didn’t think it would bother me as much as it did. Her relationship with her brother was odd as well, everything was odd and felt off. To me that’s good writing, to be able to elicit those feelings from a reader through the entire book. There was not one moment where things felt “normal”. The ending was disturbing to say the least, even though I suspected something of that nature was going to happen.
SPOILER COMING AND TRIGGER WARNING!!!
There was a very graphic and troubling miscarriage scene…it was rough.
So, this book may be perfect for some, just wasn’t for me.

Oh my goodness, what in the world did I just read?

First of all, I loved it. Second of all, it's definitely not a book for everyone.

I can't even try to categorize what genre this book is, but good God it was beautiful and eerie and downright weird.
