It has been awhile since I've read a book from this era, so it took me a little bit to get into the book and terminology, but once I did I was sucked in. I couldn't wait to see how things would turn out. Rhiannon is a wonderful person. I love the care she has for everyone around her. Lief is an interesting character. I loved his transformation in this story. This is a beautiful yet at times heartbreaking story.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Netgalley and this is my honest review.

Very well written. I liked reading the author's note at the end and seeing how accurate the author was to the historical event the book was based on. In all honesty, I did not realize this was about Vikings before reading it...I got it confused with another of her books and just didn't pay attention. If I had known I would not have requested it because I don't prefer reading books from that time period. That's just personal preference though. Other than that, I do wish Rhiannon and Leif had had more time together. I feel like their relationship was not very believable that they would already be in love after having spoken three times and having to overcome their tragic first meeting. I liked their characters and the supporting characters and the way the author slowly revealed the villain.

Talented author and storyteller Sian Ann Bessey has penned a riveting story based on true happenings in the history of Wales and Ireland in the 1100s. With Vikings based in various settlements in Ireland, the people of Wales were often terrorized by the raids the Vikings conducted. The two main fictionalized characters, Rhiannon and Leif, were both deeply affected by one of the raids, which ended with the death of Rhiannon’s father. The Viking Leif witnessed the death and turned away from participating in the pillaging raids, becoming a skilled silversmith and a believer in Christ. When he reconnects with Rhiannon, the two become involved in trying to find a killer. Although they develop feelings for each other, with such diverse backgrounds, they feel they may never be able to be together.

Vivid imagery, rich historical details, masterfully-crafted characters, and obvious deep research combine to create a story that kept me totally engrossed. With lots of history, action, suspense, a dash of romance, and some redemption and forgiveness, this tale has something for everyone. I loved learning some fascinating history while enjoying a captivating romantic story. The addition of a genealogical outline, a glossary of terms, a map of the area, and even a QR code for a pronunciation guide for unfamiliar names and words were a great help. I also appreciated the author’s notes. The fact that she grew up in the area where her story occurred gave added authenticity and interest to her book.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Sian Ann Bessey for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for The Call of the Sea coming out November 1, 2022. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Rhiannon has always found comfort in the shores of the ocean. It’s the eve of her betrothal to a nobleman when Viking ships arrive on the shores of the sea she loves. A raid leaves her beloved father dead and her life in ruins. She travels to Ynys Môn, where she takes up residence at the royal court of Owain Gwynedd.

Leif is a born voyager. He loves the sea wind and loves traveling on the open water. He’s the son of a Viking chief. He knows the ways of his people’s practice of plundering and looting. One of his companions ruthlessly kills an old man in front of the man’s daughter. Leif is haunted by the memory. Leif seeks forgiveness for the murder he let occur. He’s offered the gospel by an Irish priest and is given the chance to repent. Leif is then reunited with Rhiannon. Will he have the opportunity to gain her forgiveness? Will they be able to set aside their differences in background and culture?

Sian Ann Bessey is one of my favorite authors and I was so excited to get this book! I’ve read a lot of her books and love the the themes of bringing to life her native Wales. I also love the historical content.

I love that this book is about Wales and Vikings. Everything was well-written and I love the story. I think it would’ve been perfect for me if there had been more interaction between Rhiannon and Leif. I was a little disappointed at times because it didn’t seem like they had a lot of time getting to know each other. Sometimes it seemed like Rhiannon was the damsel in the political plot. I thought she would’ve been a little stronger with more to do based on other books by Bessey. I enjoyed it, but just felt like something was missing.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction novels about Wales and Vikings!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Gorgeously written historical fiction on Viking antecedent. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical aspect of the story. There is slight romance but I enjoyed the story as a whole regardless of romance was present or not. I would highly recommend this story if your looking for Viking lore and historical reminders with a bit of a mystery instead of a romance.

1141 in Wales England, Rihanna is getting ready for a meet the man her father has picket for her to marry, when Vikings ships land on the shore by her home. The Vikings need food to sustain them for their long row home. That night would change her whole life when she comes face-to-face with two Viking warriors. One kills her father, before the other one can stop him. Leif does not like the senseless killing that is done when his comrades raid villages. This time, he sees the beautiful Rihanna and is unable to stop Rune from killing her father. Leif hears her screams in his nightmares and remembers the horror and tears of this beautiful young women for over 2 years. Intrigue, murder, castles and Norseman play out in this interesting and enjoyable story placed in Wales and Viking camps in Ireland. It is well written and has some wonderful references in Gaelic. It is hard to imagine the life of someone in 1141, the lack of so many advances people enjoyed in the 1700-1800's. This is a great read you do not want to miss!

Rhiannon and Leif meet one fateful evening when his Viking longboat lands at her father's Welsh farmhouse to find food - and her father is killed in the process. This delays her imminent marriage (to a man her father chose but she doesn't know) and moves him to step away from raiding and explore her faith. When they finally meet again unexpectedly, he's charged with discovering the truth of a murder blamed on her uncle - but he can't do it alone. Will Rhiannon be willing to open her heart to a man associated with her father's death, however much he shows his regret? Can they together find the true murderer without becoming targets themselves?

I've never read much set in this sort of time period, but I think this author could very quickly change that. Despite the often unfamiliar names (and too many starting with C!), my attention was grabbed and held from the start. I very quickly came to care for Rhiannon and Leif and was thrilled when they finally learned to care and communicate. While I soon guessed who the true culprit was, I enjoyed watching them gradually work out how to prove it and then bring it to light. All in all, a great read with a delightfully satisfying ending. Looking forward to more by the author.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

What a book, y'all. What a book.

The Call of the Sea was such a well written book (as per the usual when it comes to Sian Ann Bessey books). I loved how unique of a story this was, along with all the awesome historical details woven throughout it.

Rhiannon and Leif were awesome characters. They are the kind of characters you just can't help but love from the start. Rhiannon was courageous and resilient. She's one of those characters I wish I could meet in real life, if only for the chance to give her the biggest hug ever (but also I'm pretty sure we would actually be bffs in real life). I loved that Leif was willing to stand up for what he felt was right, no matter the cost. I was cheering for these two from the beginning.

If this book isn't on your TBR list already, it should be. Trust me friends. You don't want to miss it.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for the early copy; all thoughts are my own :)

Very enjoyable. It was fun to read a book that was from that era (not my usual regency read).
I learned a lot from this book- I had no idea Vikings were in Ireland- the Author did a lot of research for this one.
I did find it a bit confusing to keep characters straight since their names were so unfamiliar and similar to each other. I did like how the author explained that they used the first and last name when addressing each other.
The story was interesting it wasn’t overly romantic but it had plenty of action and intrigue- this is probably one my dad would enjoy reading.

✨Book Review✨
“A lock of her hair blew against her face. With gentle fingers, Leif lifted it away, marveling at its silkiness. "Perhaps," he said, "but I happen to appreciate
both those things. They tell me that you and I share a similar love for the wind,
the waves, and the seashore.””

This book has everything! Enemy to lover trope, murder, mystery and swoony moments. I loved everything about this book. It wasn’t my normal historical fiction time frame that I read, but I enjoyed it and would be willing to read more from that time period.

The start of Rhiannon’s story is so heartbreaking breaking, but watching her overcome that and become a strong female character was great! Her character arc was compelling and relatable. She genuinely cares about those around her and what’s to do what’s right. And I love her relationship with Lief. I wish the book was longer so we could see how their relationship continues to develop.

Leif is such a good character! He comes a long from the beginning of the book. His character development was the most compelling one in this book in my opinion. I love that he is so rocked by the events in the beginning of that story that he decides to change his way so he can do better. I admire his desire to help a stranger out, despite the fact it was dangerous for him to do it.

Sian Ann Bessey has written such a wonderful book. I didn’t want to put it down. It wasn’t as fast pace as some of the other books I read but it was still good.

These thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

A Beautifully written tale, full of suspense, pain, and joy...... two people from different worlds finding love, and a murder mystery that needs to be solved,... with the right amount of medieval and Viking history.

Dual Storyline, it begins with a tragic event with the murder of Rhiannon's father, and Leif's involvement,... changing the trajectory of their lives... a dual point of view...different cultures...Redemption and Forgiveness. I loved the courage and that even despise their differences they complimented each other so well. I only wish they were more romantic scenes between Rhiannon and Leif. loved the faith elements felt very organically, not in a preaching way but as the development and growth of the character.

The Call of the Sea is a well written historical romance. The setting the Welsh coast in the 1140s. The princess is set to wed when her betrothed is murdered allegedly by her uncle. He flees to the Vikings claiming he has been framed and seeks help exonerating himself. But he is the side story. Rhiannon is niece to the Welsh king. She has no love for Vikings because they attacked her home and killed her father. But she meets Leif who is a silversmith trading wares at their market. She remembers him from the raiding party as he remembers her. Leif is also the son of a Viking king and because he can speak Gaelic he can try and help solve the mystery of the murdered bridegroom.

This is a fascinating story and all the more so because other than the romance it is based on real history. I’ve seen Viking artifacts found in England but didn’t realize that Vikings had full villages in Ireland and England in medieval times. The mystery isn’t that hard to solve but it is handled well. Rhiannon is privileged as niece of the king but Bessey keeps things realistic in that marriages are more about alliances than love. She also brings in a Christianity message without being preachy.

This is a story that includes viking raids, murder, betrothals, mystery and romance. It also includes interesting historical facts so I felt I was learning. Do take a moment and read Glossary at the beginning for Welsh and Norse words that are used throughout the book. I only had to read them once but it helped as I read the story. This is a clean book for language and does not go beyond a few kisses.

Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a beautifully written story! It hooks you on the first page and doesn't let go. I loved how the author wove history and fiction together to make a story that you hate to see end. This book has just the right amount of suspense, drama and romance to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. Loved it and highly recommend it.

4.5 stars. Beautiful story with just the right amount of medieval and Viking history, Christianity, action and romance. You can get tripped up a little with the names and welsh words but the glossary and pronunciation guide (on YouTube) is so helpful. Sian always knows how to write history in an exciting way and add a great romance. I felt very connected to the setting and the emotions of the characters. It was beautifully written.
