Everyday Cake is a casual cookbook with 45 recipes developed and curated by Polina Chesnakova. Due out 16th Aug 2022 from Sasquatch Books, it's 176 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This book really is comprehensively cake-y. There are cakes which are familiar and beloved alongside new-to-me types of cake. I am a huge cake fanatic and I couldn't think of a single type which isn't represented here in one form or another.

The recipes are grouped roughly thematically: bundt & tube cakes, round cakes, square & rectangular cakes, and loaf cakes. Each recipe includes an introduction, yields, description, equipment, ingredients listed bullet-style in a sidebar with metric and American standard measures included, and step by step specific directions which are clear and easy to follow. Alternatives and special info is included in highlighted in text bars at the end of the recipes.

The photography is superb. Most (but not all) of the recipes are accompanied by one or more color photos. Tutorial/serving shots are clear and easy to understand. The food is well styled and attractive. This is a classic and comprehensive collection and will be a favorite go-to.

Five stars. This collection is full of inspiration for gatherings, potlucks, family get-togethers, church/work/buffets and similar dinners. The included grapefruit poppy seed cake with hibiscus glaze is mind-blowing and will definitely be accompanying me to my next departmental gathering.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

This is a practical guide to baking cakes, with a tips and hints section at the front. The book is divided into sections based on the type of cake, such as round, bundt, square, or loaf. There are twists on old favorites and some really interesting flavors, such as Marbled Matcha Pound Cake with Berry Compote.

The recipes I want to try first are Salted Butterscotch Fudge Sheet Cake and Summer Berry Buckle with Crunchy Sugar. But there are many great recipes to choose from. Cake lovers should check this one out.

I received a free copy of this book from Sasquatch Books via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.

I like that the recipes were simple and easy to do. I love trying new and interesting recipes, but sometimes it’s nice to just do a simple cake. I liked that the ingredients are what most people have in their pantries. I like the baking tips dispersed throughout the book. The pictures sprinkled throughout were great as well. I like how words that people may not be familiar with were given the meanings of. I liked how some of the cakes were various colors, which made them pop.

I love my copy of Snack Cakes. I acquired it last year, when Hardcover Cook was having a sale on their ingredients boxes. So that’s the standard to which I was holding Everyday Cakes. I’m pleased to report that it rose to the challenge.

Everyday Cakes is based on the premise that there is a cake for every mood and every occasion. Its forty-five recipes for layer, bundt, loaf, and sheet cakes are designed to be reliably delicious but neither too complex nor overly sweet. The author meant for her recipes to empower rather than overwhelm the reader by writing them clearly and with tons of details.

After a brief introduction, the book began with basic baking tips, such as “read the recipe first” and “use a mise en place,” and then continued with a basic description of equipment and ingredients. The recipe section of the book was divided according to the different types of pan used to bake the cake. The bundt and tube cake section began with a page’s worth of tips to get a cake to release from a bundt pan, which is something that I frequently struggle with. Other sections contained different tips that complemented their selection of recipes.

Unfortunately, due to the poor quality of the galley that I received, I am unable to comment on the readability of the recipes. However, I did observe that the majority of ingredients were readily available in US supermarkets (or at least those in my corner of New England). Ingredient measurements were provided both in Imperial volumes and Metric weights. However, oven temperatures and pan sizes were only provided in Imperial measurements.

Overall, the book was very interesting due to its wide variety of recipes. The selection of recipes drew from Italian, French, and Russian traditions, with the occasional riffs on Southern, Spanish, Turkish, and other influences. The combinations are eclectic, including hibiscus, warm spices, citrus, and nuts.

I received this book as a digital advance reader copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion. I have yet to try any of the recipes from this book, but will update my review when I do.

If you’re looking for original and delicious cake recipes, look no further than “Everyday Cake”. “Everyday Cake” is a bit of a misnomer, because these recipes look pretty distinctive; there’s nothing “everyday” or run-of-the-mill about them. But you’ll probably wish you could eat one everyday!

This gorgeous cookbook starts bakers out right with lots of baking tips, tools, and supplies to ensure successful results. The sections are organized by the type of cake – Bundt/tube, round, square/rectangle, and loaf. Most bakers will have the majority of the ingredients on hand, but there are some recipes that require ingredients that take a recipe from ordinary to extraordinary, such as rose water, crystallized ginger, or dried hibiscus flowers. The extra effort looks absolutely worth it, because these cakes look incredible.

The pictures look luscious, and I especially appreciate the recipes that contain some in-process photos. The recipes are clear and detailed, include both cup and gram measurements, and come in a variety of difficulties. Some recipes are simpler, and some are a little more complex and time-consuming with more steps, but the results look invariably delicious. New recipes like Lemon-Lavender Yogurt Cake or Marbled Matcha Pound Cake with Berry Compote are sure to be winners. There are also fresh takes on classics, like a Yellow Birthday Cake with Whipped Malt Chocolate Frosting. Malted milk powder in frosting – um, yes please! Excuse me while I go eat that with a spoon! And I’m already planning to add the Roasted Pumpkin Spice Cake with Tahini Glaze to my Thanksgiving dessert list. This is a cookbook that I’ll reach for again and again when I want dessert to be something special.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books for providing me an advance copy of this book.

Gorgeous pictures, well explained recipes, and lots of delicious cakes! The stand out recipes for me that I can't wait to try are the Marbled Matcha Pound Cake with Berry Compote, and the Chocolate Sour Cream Cake.

The beginning of the book has a good sized section with baking tips that includes everything from how to measure your flour correctly, to the best pans to use to bake the best cakes (in the author's opinion)

The recipes are given in both cups and grams, There is a nice mix of fairly easy cake recipes, as well as some more labor intensive ones. I think that even a beginner would be able to navigate the more intricate recipes, as each recipe has very detailed directions.

If you love cake, and baking, you definitely need this book. Thank you Netgalley, for the ARC, I really enjoyed it!

Chock full of recipes using unusual, but easily available ingredients, this book will turn anyone into an expert cake baker. The recipes are easy enough for family dinners, but I can see them used for pot lucks, bae sales and casual inner parties.

I find the title of this book slightly misleading, as I picture "everyday" cakes as easy recipes that you can whip up in a pinch. While not everyday recipes, they combine exotic and interesting ingredients to create cakes that you won't find at your local grocery store bakery.

The beginning of the book contains background and information about tools and ingredients. Some recipes include step-by-step photos and instructions for assembly. While all of the recipes are interesting, they don't all have a photograph of the finished product.

Who doesn't love cake? This book has mouthwatering photos of cake and easy-to-follow recipes. Vanilla malted milk cake with chocolate frosting! Roasted strawberry shortcake! So many different styles of cake to choose from.

I love that the recipes don't seem overly sweet - I'm a big cake fan but many of them are overpowered by sugar-bomb frostings. I can't wait to get baking!

- the recipes have clear instructions
- Beautiful photos that make you wAnt to eat it all.

I cannot wait to make one of these cakes for tomorrow’s girls night! 5 stars!
