Thank you to Macmillan Audio and to NetGalley for an ARC of this audiobook.

I had been recommended books by Linda Castillo for years and finally selected this one to try. I am was not dissapointed.

I had never read a story about the Amish quite like this one before, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't know at the time, but this book is a part of a series, but it was still ok to read as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed this one, and will look forward to reading other books by Linda Castillo in the future.

The narrator was great on this audiobook as well.

Yes this is part of a series but I couldn’t resist giving it a shot. I’m so glad I did. Yes, there was part of the back story that I didn’t understand but not enough it detracted from the story.

I really liked this author’s story telling. I enjoyed the way she used Amish words and then translated them without breaking story telling. I knew what the reasoning was from the prologue but that may be because my family is from that area and of that descent. It didn’t take away from the story.

Another good installment of the Kate Burkholder series. After a childhood friend is arrested for murder, Kate travels from Ohio to Pennsylvania to help defend the Amish man. While there, she discovers evidence that puts her life in serious danger. This novel (though repetitive at times) kept me reading way past my bedtime because I wanted to make sure Kate was okay! As always, I'm anxiously awaiting another Kate story in the future.

What happened to Bishop Stoltzfus? He disappeared over ten years ago. Now skeletal remains have been found.

The elders from the vanished Bishop's district have approached Kate Burkholder. They want her to investigate the man charged with the murder. Ironically, the accused man was Kate's first love. Will she find the facts that will clear his name?

I highly recommend The Hidden One to all Amish fiction fans.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free digital audio copy of this title to review from Net Galley.

I really enjoyed listening to this book so much that I finished it all in one day. There are a few things that stood out for me that made this such an interesting and fun book to listen too. First the narrator did a fantastic job at bringing the story to life. Second would be the fact that this was my first time reading the series but the author made it where I did not have to read the 13 books previously released in order to understand what was going on in the story or to be able to fully capture the suspense of the mystery. Lastly I loved getting a look into the Amish culture and their vocabulary. I highly recommend this book to all listeners you will definitely not be disappointed.

I listened to this story and loved every minute. I love Kate Burkholder. I loved that Kate went to a different town to help an old friend get out of trouble. I loved the narration of thus book. I loved the suspense and that we get to know more about Kates past. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Thanks for the ARC. I have been in a reading funk, so this one took way longer than it should have for me. I love the fact that Castillo has me still caught up in this series and can't wait for the next one! Again, I highly recommend this series to anyone who hasn't tried it yet. I haven't had a patron complain about this series yet!

I love this author. Burkholder is an awesome cop. Love how she gets right in there and starts investigating.. can't wait until the next installment of this author. Characters are definitely easy to fall I love with.

I both listened to and read The Hidden One, and of the two, I think I preferred the audio version The narrator did a great job pronouncing the Pennsylvania Dutch, which I sometimes have trouble with in Amish stories. Personally, I'm a fan of the suspense genre and this one was like listening to great radio theater. It kept me engaged in the story,

I didn't realize at first that this was written for a general audience, as most stories involving the Amish are in the Christian book realm, so some of the language took me by surprise. Once I did realize the audience, the language made sense.

When skeletal remains on a farm in Pennsylvania are identified as Amish Bishop Ananias Stoltzfus who went missing 10 years previously, Jonas Bowman is arrested and accused of murder. His rifle was buried with the body, but did he pull the trigger? The current bishop and both ministers of the district believe in Jonas' innocence, but they need help proving it. Since the Amish generally handle their own problems, they turn to former Amish woman, Kate Burkholder, who is now the police chief in Painter's Mill, OH. Can Kate investigate a 10-year-old disappearance and find the truth before Jonas is sentenced for a crime he did not commit?

As Kate investigates she hits roadblocks from the local police who don't want her "horning in" on their case. Then, she is attacked in her hotel room and told to leave. Her questions have made someone nervous. As she turns up clues that indicate the bishop was not the man he seemed, can she expose a killer before he sets his sights on her again?

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I know it's part of a series, and I will definitely look to read more of the Kate Burkholder stories. I definitely recommend!

I loved this book. This was the first time I have listen too or even read a book about the Amish. I love the fact that it was so full of twist and turns. I know how secretive the Amish are so this makes me wonder if something like this could ever happen or has happen.

I received an audio of The Hidden One from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

I’ve read a few books from the Kate Burkholder series and have enjoyed them. I live in Pennsylvania near Lancaster in a Mennonite area. The Amish setting is extremely interesting a familiar. The book has a good back story of Kate and childhood friend Jonas Bowman (the accused). My only question is how does a small police chief get so many days off? 4stars

This Linda Castillo book, The Hidden One, is as good as her others. The finding of skeletal remains which turn out to be that of an elder throws a Pennsylvania Amish community into turmoil The man accused of the murder is a past lover of Kate's which complicates the matter even further. The plot twists that go back over decades and generations is fascinating.

As one of my all time favorite series this one did not disappoint. Kate Burkholder was approached by two bishops who were seeking assistance. A bishop who was missing for 18 years, has been found through his skeletal remains. The person who is accused of the crime is someone that Kate knew years ago and was her first love. He is married with a family after having been forced out of Painters Mill.

As always, Kate is there to lend a hand to the authorities who do not feel like she needs to be kept in the loop. Kate does her own investigation and she ultimately finds out the truth.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.

5 stars

Castillo's Kate Burkholder again gets pulled into a mystery out of her jurisdiction. A childhood friend is accused of murder and Kati is asked to intervene. Her old friend (who was also her first love), is charged with murder of an Amish bishop in Pennsylvania where he now lives.

Though the community is also Amish, it has markedly different traditions and customs from the Ohio group with which Kate is familiar. She wants to help her old friend but must tread carefully to avoid stepping on toes as well as making herself a target.

To complicate matters, only skeletal remains were found as the Bishop was murdered at least ten years ago. Can Sheriff Burkholder avoid the pitfalls to save her friend? Is he innocent?

Read The Hidden One to learn the answers.

The Hidden One is another Amish mystery revealing just how human, even this religious sect tend to be. They more often than not hide these frailties, but Kate does not accept flimsy explanations for murder, especially when her first love is implicated.

I have long since been fascinated by the Amish lifestyle and have been wanting to read more novels around this.
Linda Castillo has been recommended in this genre so I was excited to try her latest one!
The plot is fast paced, there are lots of characters and relationships to keep track of, as well as scenes from different timelines too so as an audio I did have to rewind rather a lot to fully grasp the unfolding events.
This is book 14 in her Kate Burkholder series so the characters are well established. There are lots of references to Kate's backstory so I would definitely recommend reading in order. I definitely feel like I've missed out on some great books and would love to go back and read them later.

The Lord looks at the heart...

This is a thoroughly enjoyable audiobook. I found myself going back occasionally to find details, because they seemed important later. I don't generally like a book so immersed in one culture or religion, in this case both. However, Amish are much more complicated than they look like from the outside. It is a community that many of us have lost over the past decade.

I really liked how Kate Burkholder is going back to her home and is the only one who is able to solve the crime though some others might have tried.

This is one of my favorite series, and I always look forward to reading each new book. This one has lots of unexpected elements, including an Amish suicide in an Englischer church. I like looking back at parts of Kate's childhood, and the thoughts of roads not taken. I think the mystery here is complicated and nuanced. Themes of history, attachments, choices, and personal change run through the book, and having Kate be far from home, separated (physically) from Tomasetti, worked well. Castillo always does a great job with characters. Not all Amish people are good (or bad). Neither are all cops or any other group or identifier you can think of. Her well-rounded characters, thoughtful plots, and suspenseful pacing always keep me glued to the screen (or, in this case, earbuds).

The only reason this is 4 stars rather than 5 is that I feel like the solution is telegraphed a bit too much near the end. I think Kate would put the clues together faster than I would, and she doesn't in this case.

But still a super story.

I really enjoyed this audiobook, but then again I love all the books in this series and The Hidden One did not disappoint. Excellent series, well written. Who would have thought that this many murders would take place within the Amish community! Loved it!!!

I do love a good mystery series, and normally I like to start from the beginning, even if reviews etc say they can be read as standalones. But this Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo has been recommended to me multiples times so when I had the opportunity to jump into it (at book #14!) I threw caution to the wind. I'm glad I did - I think - because now I want to go back to the beginning and read the previous 13 - more books to add to my TBR pile!
The mystery here takes Burkholder away from her small Ohio hometown when she's asked to look into a cold case from 10 years prior in an Amish community in Pennsylvania. Her help is requested because she has a connection to the man who's been accused of the murder. It's an interesting case and while I suspected the motive, I didn't guess who the murderer was until it was revealed. Kate's an interesting character, and knowing so little about her it was nice to get a look at her teen years in flashbacks. And I can tell I'll enjoy the cast of quirky characters that seem to surround her when she's in her home territory, as well as more insights into Amish life. I listened to the audio version and that was nice when the Deitsch dialogue came in - my German and Dutch, always shaky, is very old and rusty these days and pronunciations would've been butchered even in my head.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
