Usually I have to wait on hold quite a while for the newest audiobooks in this series but I was given this one the same day it was released. Lucky!!

THE HIDDEN ONE by Linda Castillo, narrated by Kathleen McInerney, is the 14th book in the Kate Burkholder series.

Kate goes out of state to help a childhood friend prove his innocence in a cold case murder. The Amish don’t want to trust her because she left the fold. The local police don’t like her nosing around even though she’s a police chief in another state, or maybe because of that. She doesn’t let any of that stop her and she keeps exploring all the little bits of info she gleans. Of course, there’s those that would be more than happy to silence her questions for good, and are determined to do just that.

This is another great book in this wonderful series. 5 stars!!

Thanks to NetGalley, Minotaur Books, and MacMillan Audio for giving be this audiobook in exchange for my honest review. I loved it!!

Linda Castillo has written another Kate Burkholder novel that engages the reader from the start and keeps them guessing until the end. Amish elders from a town in Ohio travel to Painters Mill to look into the long ago murder of an Amish bishop called Ananias Stoltzfus and the alleged murderer is Kate’s first love Jonas Bowman.

Ms. Castillo has written another entertaining installment of the Kate Burkolder series. Fans and newbies alike will be entertained. I enjoyed the visit to Kate’s origin story and the impact of her first love after the trauma that changed the trajectory of her life.

Rating: 3.75
Author: Linda Castillo

When I received this book I had no idea it was part of a series. Luckily the author did a great job of introducing characters/settings so a new reader wouldn’t be confused. I love being able to pick up a random book in a series and reading it as a standalone so that made me happy. However, if you're a fan of the series you will definitely connect and understand this one more than a newbie. I will say reading this one made me excited for the next and I might even go back and read some of the early ones!

This isn’t the type of book I would typically read but the title along with the synopsis intrigued me and made me want to give it a try. I switched between the audiobook and physical book and can say both formats were enjoyable. I thought the narrator did a good job and it was easy to listen to while at 3.0x speed. I found a few words to be repeated a lot and I do mean a lot but that will honestly probably just be a me thing and not an everyone thing.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this one. As a reader I love when I can notice when an author is passionate about her characters/settings. This is the 14th book in the series and I have a feeling there will be several more.

Thank you so much to @minotaur for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

While Amish are peaceful society, murder does happen there.

In "The Hidden One", newest mystery by Linda Castillo, Chief of Police Katie Burkholder takes a trip to Lancaster county in Pennsylvania. She is asked by community elders to help prove innocence of her first love, Jonas Bowman. Jonas is accused of killing beloved bishop Ananias Stoltzfus, whose remains were just found after over decade of being missing.

But who really was Ananias Stoltzfus?

The Hidden One is the fourteenth title in the Kate Burkholder series. Fans of Linda Castillo will not be disappointed. I have not read all of the titles in this series yet, but each are fast-paced and keep the readers guessing who did it. The Hidden One fills in much of Kate’s background and I loved seeing how her history has shaped who the character has become. I highly recommend this title. The narrator, Kathleen McInerney, was good and the pronunciation of the Amish words was easily understandable and she read where the characters were distinguishable.

I received an ARC eaudiobook from NetGalley and MacMillian audio in exchange for an honest review.

This was a bit unique for me. Kate Burkholder, raised as Amish but left the order at 18. She is now the Chief of Police in a small Ohio town. A group of Amish men from a town in Pennsylvania come to ask her to come and help find out what happened in a murder in which a former friend of hers is implicated. There’s quite a bit of action and plenty of information about Amish life.

The story was pretty good, as was the narrator.

The Author continues to provide insight into the Amish way of life and write another wonderful book for her fans. With this book Sheriff Kate Burkholder has been asked to look into the death of a Bishop. A Bishop that has been dead for eighteen years, but who’s body had just recently been found and the accused murderer is someone Kate knew at one time very, very well. I received an ARC of this good book from Netgalley and St.Martin’s Press
The comments and review are my honest opinion.

Just like historical fiction, I love the aspect of leaning about a culture while joining it with a crime/mystery. The first chapter threw me, I had realized it was a flashback, and worried the book was going to be a tad bit too religious compared to my normal reads. I’m glad I pushed through to get to the full storyline- I’d definitely recommend.

Another excellent read by Linda Castillo. I don’t think I could ever tire of stories of Kate Burkholder. I especially enjoyed this one as it talks about Kate’s past and we get to meet a former lover that she stops at nothing to save from a wrongful conviction. As the story unfolds, her life is threatened as she gets closer and closer to the truth. Will she save her old friend from being convicted? Overall, I’d rate this one four stars, but I can’t be the only Castillo fan wondering with Kate and John are going to tie the knot already? And a little romance also never hurts!

𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤!

I have no idea why I haven’t read anything from Linda Castillo before, this is the 14th book in this series and the second one I read. They’re just addictive; full of suspense, thrilling, and impossible to put down. If you like crime and police procedurals you need to check this series.

Thank you Minotaur Books Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this gifted copy and ALC.

This is an Amish Mystery Suspense/Thriller, and this is the 14th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read and reviewed all the other books in this series before reading this book. Even though I enjoyed the other books in this series I do feel you can read this book as a standalone, but you will be missing the character development that happens in other books. This book is all about Kate helping an Amish man that was her first love, and we get flashbacks of when she was Amish throughout this book. I really loved this book. I loved getting more of Kate's backstory. The mystery in this book was really good and kept me on my toes guessing what was going to happen. I loved the characters in this book. Kate's character has done so much growing and changing throughout this series, and I love her character how she is now. I think this book is my favorite Kate Burkholder book so far. I re-read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I really loved the narrator. I was kindly provided an e-copy and e-audiobook of this book by the publisher (Minotaur Books) or author (Linda Castillo) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This is the first book I’ve “read” by Linda Castillo, and although it’s #14 in her Kate Burkholder series, the flashbacks made it easy to enjoy as a stand-alone novel. I would be tempted to go back and catch up on the earlier books except for the coarse language and occasional violence. That was also the difference between a4 and 5 star rating for me. Otherwise, the writing and pacing were crisp and kept me on the edge of my seat. This clever mystery plays on the violent death of an cruel Amish bishop - anomalies in the gentle, pacifist Amish culture. The man jailed in this not-so-cold case is Kate’s first love, whom she hasn’t seen in decades. Motivated to right old wrongs, Kate overcomes stubborn silences, dusty memories, personal threats, and nearly deadly assaults to unearth the truth. I really enjoyed the twists right up to the end! I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher via NetGalley and was not required to post a review.

THE HIDDEN ONE is a perfect blend of characters, plotting, and pacing. My favorite part was Kate Burkholder’s character; she took my breath away. She is determined, resilient, and fearless. Finding books with an intelligent and strong woman character like this is sometimes difficult. Thank you, Linda Castillo, for bringing this stalwart character to life. Castillo’s writing is skilled and smart.

Castillo grabbed my attention from the beginning of the story with a mysterious note, “I know who you are. I know what you did. I know your secrets, all of them.” This suspenseful mystery will keep you guessing right up to the satisfying end.

How have I not heard of this Kate Burkholder series before now? I plan to remedy that situation very soon. I selected THE HIDDEN ONE merely hoping to get a better feeling for the Amish culture. I got that and more and can't wait to read the entire series.

I listened to the audiobook of THE HIDDEN ONE, performed by the captivating narrator Kathleen McInerney. McInerney easily differentiates characters and will have readers impressed with accents, tone, and pacing. She treats listeners to an assortment of personalities.

Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions expressed here are my own.

The Hidden One is a must read!

I have always enjoyed books about the Amish for as long as I can remember. For some reason I find their way of life interesting.

I listened to this book on audio in one day. I had to know what was going to happen in this murder mystery! The ending did not disappoint.

I will def be checking out Linda’s other books in the near future!

I am a huge fan of Linda Castillo and was eagerly waiting for The Hidden One which is her 14th novel in her Kate Burkholder series. Even though Kate is called away to help solve a crime we still get to see Tomasetti and the gang at the police department. I love everything about this series and hope there are many more to come!

The narrator is so good and I love listening to these books because I'm bound to get the Amish words wrong in my head. By listening I just get to enjoy and learn a little bit too.

If you haven't started this series yet, please go to the beginning because each book builds on the next. This truly is one of my favorite series of all time!

Thank you Netgalley for giving me the audio version to listen to. All opinions are my own and in my humble opinion this is a 5 star read!

I discovered this book on Net Galley. The author was a new one for me and I really enjoyed her writing style. I chose this title in audiobook form and the narrator’s voice was perfect. She sounded pleasant, kept my attention and did not put me to sleep or cause my mind to wander while listening. When I first started the book I did not realize that it was part of a series. Being as the main character, Police Chief Kate Burkholder was so likeable, I plan to seek out the other books in the series. The book was very intriguing and made me want to keep listening so that I could find out “who did it”. All in all, great book.

This was a solid three and a half stars, but I’m rounding up because I’m nice.
This was the fourteenth book featuring police chief, Kate Burkholder, of which I had previously read zero. Had I known that this was one in a long series, I probably wouldn’t have requested it; I hate jumping into a bunch of history between characters that the author assumes we already know. There seemed to be a little of that here, but not too bad.
The story itself was pretty good - the remains of an Amish bishop are uncovered years after he went missing, and another member of the community has been arrested for his murder. Kate is pulled into the fray due to her former life as an Amish girl and her previous ties to the accused. A lot of of police stuff follows, some predictable, some not.
I listened to the audiobook and always forget to mention that Netgalley audiobooks are trash. The sound quality is horrible and they’re glitchy as well.
Thanks to #netgalley and #minotaurbooks for this #arc of #thehiddenone in exchange for an honest review.

Linda Castillo never fails to delivery! Loved this book. Honestly i just read book 1 of the Painter's Mill series a few months ago and didn't realize it was a series till i got the opportunity to pre-read this book and felt like I stepped right back into town with all the characters from the first book right there with me. And i went and looked the books up. Her writing makes you fully feel the characters thoughts and actions. There are times when she's describing the characters actions/movements like a head tilt, smile, etc and i feel myself doing them. The story line keeps you hooked, waiting, wanting, needing to keep going to see what will happen. Loved, loved, loved! Definitely going back and reading all her other books!!

Linda Castillo provides another excellent addition to a wonderful series. Kate Burkholder takes on a case in Pennsylvania, moving us away from Ohio for this installment. We learn more about Katie's childhood and background through a series of flashbacks that give depth to the present time. Linda Castillo writes beautifully, keeping a nice balance between past, present, humor, suspense, and thrilling moments,. Her accounts of Amish life are detailed and respectful, at least to from non-Amish perspective. I highly recommend this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Kathleen McInerney is an excellent reader. I have enjoyed several of her performances and she never fails to impress me. Her timing, tone, and keen ability to bring the story to life without overdoing it, are outstanding.
