Bottom line: you won’t be bored!
Fast paced + super short chapters = good thriller. Overall, I liked it and it made for a fun buddy read.
I enjoyed the first part more than second, where it got bogged down in over explaining. There were some odd relationship dynamics, wild assumptions by the MC, and too many minor characters to keep track of.
If you’re looking for a quick read or use thrillers as a quick palette cleanser, this is perfect for that.

One of my favorite authors! This book was a page tuner and I enjoyed it, but not as much as her previous books. Amelie moves after her father dies and meets some friends who work at a fashion magazine. They all become great friends. One day their boss, Ned, convinces Amelie to marry him for money, she agrees to a month long marriage, and then she will have the money she needs to go to college. What Amelie was not expecting was who her husband really was and the nightmare that awaits. Ned and Amelie are kidnapped and held prisoner. Why did this happen? Who wants them dead and why? Will they escape? This book is a whirlwind and I really enjoyed the twist at the end. Great winter read. Thank you to #stmartinspress and #netgalley for the spectacular ARC! #theprisoner

Reviewed on Goodreads 8/21: This book was great and easy to get through until the ending. The plot twist was semi predictable but also not one I found particularly interesting. Paris’ writing still made this is a 3 star (and honestly was a 4.5 star until the last 15% of the book).

This one started off so interesting! I really loved how it hooked me from page 1. I wish the rest of the book would have followed that same pattern, but unfortunately it did not. I did still enjoy this book, but it was not one of my favorites by this author. 3.5 stars

I was so excited to read this book since B.A. Paris is renown for excellent writing! The first half of this book (The Kidnapping) was fast-paced and a page-turner but in the second half (The Reckoning) the pace really slowed down and the story got a bit convoluted and I wasn’t nearly as engaged. There were times I considered not finishing it

I’ve read every one of B.A. Paris’s books and this one did not disappoint. It’s fast and twisty and easy to read. I couldn’t put it down!
I loved that the story was new and fresh- something original compared to a lot of the latest thrillers. It kept me guessing all the way to the final page! I found myself trying to get through the book as fast as I could to figure out what was happening!
As usual with this author, it’s thriller plus a healthy dose of moral dilemma. I find that to be the ongoing thread of all the books. I really enjoyed it!

B.A. Paris is a hit or miss author for me. Some of her books I’ve loved and some I’ve found to be not so great. However her newes thriller The Prisoner was 100% addicting and I loved the storyline. I loved the characters in this story and the creative plot, this was not your typical thriller! Loved it!

I loved the dual timeline of the story, flipping between Amelie’s past prior to meeting Ned and her current situation as a prisoner. The chapters are short which makes this book a quick read. Additionally the author does an excellent job at sprinkling in little bits here and there to keep you guessing what happened. Although you might think this is your typical locked room read…the story takes some turns I was not expecting which kept me wanting to know more.

This was another book I finished last week on vacation, but I’ve fallen behind with writing and posting reviews. I enjoyed this thriller about a woman being held prisoner in a dark room. It has dual timelines, leading up to the kidnapping then during her time trapped. I think it worked well for the story and during the past segments I was questioning everyone. In the end it was an enjoyable read. If you like thrillers, check it out when it comes out this fall.

The Prisoner quickly sucked me in-the first half alternates between the main character's kidnapping and her life before the kidnapping. The majority of the book flew by, but towards the end, things seemed to slow down, with all of the answers given out in one lump sum, so for that I am giving four stars. I would recommend The Prisoner and all books by B.A. Paris.

The Prisoner opens with Amelie waking up in a pitch black room with no idea why she is there. Her story is told in dual timelines, one where she is in the room and one about her life leading up until this moment. As the storylines converge you are left wondering if she is more of a prisoner in this room or in her marriage to billionaire Ned Hawthorpe.
It's a fast paced book that keeps you engaged with some things being predictable in the comforting was thrillers are, but with also enough unpredictability to keep you turning pages.
My first B.A. Paris book and I throughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advanced e-copy of this book.

Welcome to the mind games. Amelie and her billionaire husband, Ned, are kidnapped in the middle of the night. Who took them and why?
In classic B.A. Paris style, the twists and turns kept me guessing. I was hooked from the very first line. Everything goes as expected right up until it doesn’t. While I enjoyed this fast paced thriller, a critical point in the plot left me with a lot of questions.
This is a great stormy afternoon thriller read. Get cozy and sink into a world of money and shadows.

The Prisoner is a fast paced thriller about a husband and wife being kidnapped and figuring out who kidnapped them and why they did it.
Part 1 of the story had me hooked! It was fast paced and held my interest. The second part was interesting at first and then I feel like the story just ended. It was interesting to find out who was behind the kidnapping though!
Overall I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend to anyone who loves to read thrillers!

I struggled with this one. Here’s the thing… When you have one storyline that for half the book means every second chapter details someone doing nothing because they’ve been kidnapped and are in a pitch black room… every second chapter for half the book are similar. It truly felt like copy paste and I had to force myself to read the chapters in case there was information I needed.
I also found the “helpless trapped girl” trope to be a little frustrating and over played. The storyline was just also not feasible. There is just also 0 chance that any of the storyline would happen 😂 the ‘cover up’ of the murders?
This one was sadly a miss for me but I would rec it for fans of domestic thrillers or for those that don’t read too many thrillers and aren’t exhausted by the vulnerable female trope.

Definitely not what I expected. I really like that the author included the "past" and "present" perspectives. I wished we spent more time getting to know the main character, Amelie. Through out the book, I had a lot of questions about her and it felt like I just got glimpses of her personality, motivations, etc. The ending was a little weird, but I would read another book by B.A. Paris.

I really enjoy B.A. Paris's books and was excited to receive an ARC of The Prisoner from the publisher. It did not disappoint! The Prisoner opens with the kidnapping of Amelie and her new husband, Ned. Like many books, the chapters alternate between the present and the past, gradually filling in the blanks about how Amelie ended up in her current situation. Paris does an excellent job of doling out just enough information in each chapter to keep you reading--I finished the book in a day because I absolutely had to find out what happened next! No spoilers, but I did really enjoy the last part of the book--it wasn't what I had expected, but it was very satisfying. Fans of domestic suspense novels will enjoy this well-written and innovative take on the genre.

I've read most of B.A. Paris's books and really thought I was going to love this one. The main character, Amelie, is a young girl whose father dies and she is left orphaned. She ends up marrying a real jerk for money so she can go to law school and they end up getting kidnapped. It was very slow and despite the short chapters, I thought the first half of the book during the kidnapping was repetitive and dragged...how many times can you walk around the room and feel the walls, count the steps, and describe getting your food each day. It started to pick up after the kidnapping was over and I really thought it was going to get interesting, and parts of it were. But then it started to drag again, just too much description about the reason behind the kidnapping and no real character development throughout the story. And the ending was a real disappointment for me.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

I’ve been on a thriller binge all summer and this is by far the first one that I read in one sitting and can’t stop thinking about. It kept me engaged and needing to see what happened next . I’ve read other B.A. Paris books and this one certainly didn’t disappoint!

3.5 rounded up.
I think I’m still chasing the thrill of Behind Closed Doors and nothing Paris has written since then has hit quite the same sweet spot.
Some of the plot had me quickly turning pages because I was eager to learn more about what was happening, but it felt like there were a lot of other random bits of tidying that felt inauthentic. The biggest twist felt very obvious from about a third of the way into the book, but the extent of the deeds of the villain was expected and yielded a high body count.
While the ending is mostly tied up in a bow, there are still a handful of questions, but given that it was a summer read for me, I’m willing to ignore them in favor of a great suspension of disbelief.

This book was amazing. You could really feel the terror the characters felt while they were kidnapped and being held. The story flowed well and kept me guessing the whole time. I never saw the ending coming!
Thank you to B.A. Paris, the publisher, and to Netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest thoughts.
