This physiological thriller has you guessing from the beginning. Chapters switch between present and past storylines. With each turn of a page you find yourself wondering how these two time parallels are going to connect.

Great descriptive writing, especially during the present day prose. Highly recommend.

This was a page turning psychological thriller that I did not want to put down. The storyline grabbed my interest right away and Paris's short chapters moved the plot along so well. And there was a big plot twist that I didn't see coming. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

BA Paris does not disappoint!!! The story is told in past & preset of Amelie and what happens when she marries her boss for a 1 month arrangement. She finds out that that the man she temporarily marries leaves no problems alive. When they get kidnapped and she is in a dark room-she fights to keep her sanity. As the story unravels, she thinks everyone that surrounds them is in on it in some capacity and she needs too find the truth. A truth that may shock her. I could not read it fast enough to figure it out. You won’t be able to put it down!!

This was another great suspense from B.A. Paris. I read this book so quickly and was invested from the start.

I feel This one started out strong, and was similar to the feelings I had reading Behind Closed Doors. However, the last half was too much of a play by play. Literally describing every single action in detail, and was way too drawn out. Could have been a 100 pages less. The first half was so fast-paced, lots left to the imagination, filled with suspense, and the last half felt like an entirely different book. I also Don’t feel that every factor needed to be re-visited.

This book was one of my most anticipated for the year and I'm so glad I was able to get an early copy thanks to St. Martin's Press!

This is B. A. Paris' 6th book and I have now read all of them. She's an auto-buy/read author for me for sure. My favorite so far has been Bring Me Back and this one falls slightly under that one for second place.

This story gripped me right away and I was sitting there within the first few pages like "WAIT! WHAT IS HAPPENENING?" I love the way she slowly reveals important details in the first half making you second guess everything/everyone.

The chapters are super short and switch between past/present for the first half of the book.

The ending was just OK for me. There were SO many details and it was "told not shown" in a way that dragged on a little long for my taste.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this one and think it will be a big hit when it publishes on November 15th!

3.5 Rounded Up

Interesting and clever plot (despite being stretched somewhat into the unbelievable territory). Great character development for Amelie and Ned, but little for the remaining characters - some are practically interchangeable.

This definitely could have been a 4.5 to 5 star book if not for the drawn out ending. I’m glad for the explanations the ending provided though.

Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

The story started off with a lot of promise, but once the plot continued to develop, it simply didn’t keep my interest. It was a lot of repetition. The characters were not likable and the reason the main character was kidnapped fell short for me and was quite disappointing.

Also, the ending?? It was so abrupt and random.. I thought I missed something

B. A. Paris is one of the first authors I ever read when jumping into the thriller/suspense genre. She is such a great writer and her books are why I still love and read thriller books! The Prisoner is another magnificent book, written by B. A. Paris! Her descriptive words take you right to where the book is being written, you can see, taste, smell, the whole scene, every time! I loved this book, the puzzle pieces slowing coming together. The past and present coming into each other, just brilliant! Highly recommend this book! Thank you to @netgalley for this opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.

B.A. Paris can be hit or miss for me. I did enjoy this overall much more than some previous books. I was very invested in the story and why Amelie was kidnapped. This has short chapters, tension, and lots of suspense! The story is told in dual timelines and I kept reading this very quickly to get back to the past timeline. The present day timeline just felt a bit repetitive since she is in the same room for a huge portion of the book. I guessed the 'who' very early on but not the 'why'. The main character had a good background and story arc but some of the other important supporting characters lacked much detail and I confused a couple names because of that. I didn't love the ending and how everything wrapped up (a bit eye-rolly too) but the first 80% was very solid for me. You really have to suspend reality with much of this story as well. Amelie also mentioned Stockholm Syndrome earlier and I think this played a role as well into the slightly ambiguous ending.

This one hurts a little because I’m truly such a big fan of B.A. Paris! I think she’s a fantastic thriller author, but her last two books have unfortunately fell short for me. I was so excited for this book! It was incredibly high on my most anticipated reads for this year.

Synopsis: Amelie wakes up in a dark room, alone and terrified. She has been kidnapped and she has no idea why. Her captors do not communicate with her in any way except to bring her food. The story then alternates between past and present timelines uncovering how Amelie ended up in her current situation.

The story started off with a lot of promise, but once the plot continued to develop, it simply didn’t keep my interest. The backstory of Amelie and the corrupt characters and events that led to her being captured were boring. The characters were not likable, and the information dump at the end was confusing and forgettable. It had good moments of suspense sprinkled throughout but the whole book was one step forward, three steps back 😒

Also, the ending?? I literally turned the page expecting the story to keep going because it was so abrupt and random.

Really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller! Lots of twists to keep you guessing. The main character makes some interesting life choices but is resilient and keeps pushing through. Will definitely recommend this to our library patrons who like plot driven stories.

Amelie finds herself in a whirlwind marriage with a billionaire... but at what cost? When she and her new husband are abducted and kept as prisoners, she wonders how she could have gotten herself into this situation. Her husband isn't who she thought he was - is he the enemy, or are the kidnappers? Who is on her side?

B.A. Paris has a way of writing that totally captivates me every time. You definitely end up connecting with and feeling sorry for Amelie, and rooting for her to find her way out of the kidnapping. I didn't love the ending, I wish it was thought out a little bit more, but not all stories have closure, and I need to be okay with that. Amelie suffers so much that you really want her to have a happy ending. Still a great read!

I was disappointed in this one - I've enjoyed her novels in the past and always found them to be quick and easy reads full of lots of twists and turns that, while requiring some suspension of disbelief, remained just plausible enough throughout most of the story that I could enjoy them. This one, on the other hand, veered into unbelievable early on and only dug its way deeper as the story progressed. It dragged on and was fairly repetitive throughout the hostage situation - which I understand on one hand, but doesn't exactly make for compelling reading chapter after chapter on the other. And I found the resolution a bizarre mix of predictable and odd, and while it did nothing to make the story more believable, it did make it slightly more entertaining. On the whole though this was not my favorite of the Paris novels..

I loved this book. It kept my interest from beginning to the end. Every time I had to put it down I kept thinking about it and what would happen next. Great character development. I felt like I was part of the story.

I cannot get enough of BA Paris’ novels. They suck my in from page one and my plans, chores, etc disappear until I am done with the book, and The Prisoner was no exception!

The story is based around Amelie a young woman residing in France who recently lost her father. She decides to move to England to start over. In England, things are very tough in the beginning until she meets a woman who shows her some kindness. But that is short lived and Amelie’s luck starts to change again….

This novel is a fast read and I love her the author always takes time to tie up loose ends!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital advanced readers copy!!

I wasn't too excited about reading this book, but I wanted to like it and give it a chance. It's hard to make any story about a person being held hostage exciting simply because they're stuck in a room with not much change in the position they're in.
The story lacked character development. The main character's background was detailed, but everyone else was just a part of the story and they were just there with little to no background.
The first half of the book was okay. It got better a little into the first half. The second part was an explanation of the plot, but it felt rushed and everything was thrown together quickly. I didn't really like the ending and expected more.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

This is a great page turner which keeps you guessing. Who can you trust? Are some things that happen by chance too good to be true?

When life takes a terrible turn for Amelie who is orphaned as a result of her fathers death, she decides to pick up and move to London to make a new life for herself. She ends up encountering the right people to help her get on her feet in the hopes of ultimately pursuing her dream of one day going to college. But is this new life and friend group too good to be true? When Amelie finds herself a prisoner in her new life she begins to question everything.

This book starts out really strong and really draws you in with a format alternating between past and present- making you want to just read one more chapter! I was very engaged from the beginning and wanted to keep reading.

I really liked the main character of Amelie and felt for her as she has gone through a lot even though she is very young. She was orphaned at 17 and the homeless until she was employed and semi adopted by a woman who meets her in a coffee shop.

The story never stopped being enthralling for me- I really liked the short chapters that were full of suspense and didn’t guess the ending which can be hard for some thrillers to accomplish.

I did feel that the ending was lackluster- while I didn’t guess it, I didn’t think it was great. Overall- I enjoyed the book!

The Prisoner starts out as a fast paced thriller that had me reading off and on all day…I couldn’t put it down! But I felt it went on way too long and by the end, I was just frustrated. I was going to rate it as 3 stars but the final chapters just knocked it down one. I don’t like loose ends but the “explanation” went on and on, and then abruptly ended with a “maybe” that was just annoying. I guess that was the point but Amelie mentioned Stockholm syndrome earlier…anyway, not my favorite, but it was a fast read and started out great, so I didn’t hate it!

I received an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for a review and opinions are my own.
