Michael Wilton's writing style was rather delightful to me. It took me back to my much loved Mary Roberts Rinehart. I did like the main character: Robert Bruce. Robert was asked (or more like begged) by his close friend, Tom, to locate his daughter, whom he'd never had the chance to know or even meet. The next morning, Tom's dead body was found. So now Robert has two mysteries to solve. Will he be successful?

Robert Bruce is asked to find a friends daughter that he never knew. But from the start murder happens and then clues get harder and harder to come by. And more bodies start to pile up. He does not give up his search!

This was an intriguing story that had me guessing. I enjoyed it very much!

Every time I thought I had things sussed, along came another surprise!! So rare for a story to catch me out, so well done to the author!

I do love cozy mysteries set in idyllic, quaint English villages where rumors and local gossip add as much flavor to the story as the mystery and the eccentric bunch of characters. My favorite cozy mystery is from the Miss Marple collection- The Murder at the Vicarage and I was hoping to enjoy reading this book- Death at the Last Chapter by Michael N. Wilton but unfortunately the book disappoints in multiple ways.

To be honest, I put in a request for this book in NetGalley because I was attracted by the cover and the intriguing title. I love literary mysteries and for few chapters in the beginning I thought that the mystery has something to do with the book one of the characters was writing. Tom Conway is a famous author but he is plagued by his own story from his past. Many years ago, when he was depressed and lonely after the breakdown of his marriage, his neighbor, a kind and sympathetic nurse, consoled him and they both fell in love and had a daughter out of wedlock. But Tom was disallowed to meet his daughter by his lover's orthodox family. Now, many years later he yearns to reunite with his daughter and he enlists his friend, Robert's, help.

Robert Bruce is the local knight in shining armor and always ready to lend a helping hand. He agrees to take upon the assignment set upon him by Tom but finds that his path is blocked by a murderer intent on achieving his goal. Soon bodies pile up and Tom now finds himself working on two tasks - finding the lost daughter and uncovering the murderer's identity.

There are too many loopholes to count in the story and yes, although there is a death in the last chapter of the book, it felt abrupt and no satisfactory and logical explanation was given. Also the setting, the dialogues and the ambience made me assume that the book was set somewhere in the past. So I was genuinely surprised to read that the time period all the incidents took place was in 2020! Excluding one of the characters no one even owns a mobile phone. Baffling!

To summarize I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. But it was a quick read! Thanks to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial publisher, and Michael Wilton for an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book was a light suspense , intrigue, action, and a decent storyline! I did enjoy reading this book but it wasn't one of my all time favorites it was just a decent read! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

This book was sent to me by Netgalley for review. A book of mystery and intrigue…friendships…secrets…the missing…the characters are likable in that the reader hopes they succeed in discovering those secrets…the story moves slowly at times but reaches a surprise ending.
