This was an enjoyable read, I found the characters quite likeable as you found yourself really sympathising with their situation. I can't imagine myself having to live through these times back in England where your social standing and the town gossip dictated your life and who you could marry.
Kitty and her four sisters have been left with quite a bit of debt since her parents have passed and it's up to her to figure out how they can get out of it, without losing the roof over their heads. She takes it upon herself to try and find a husband who is wealthy enough, so she can assure the family keeps the home so her sisters may have better lives for it.
Kitty's time in London is nothing if not challenging and I found myself giggling at a few situations she found herself in.
This was a fun read for anyone who enjoys historical romance, I will be keeping my eye out for future books by Sophie Irwin.

A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting was a cozy Bridgerton vibe read. The character development throughout the story paired well with the enemies-to-lover trope making it an easy book to get easily wrapped up in. The style of narrating where it flows between characters was enjoyable as you could see what they were thinking at that point and time to help build the plot. I would read another story by this author again.

This A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting is not your modern day how to land a guy in x days to fall in love. Be transported into the Regency Era of London and follow Kitty Talbot on her quest to find a husband. A rich husband. One that can pay off her debts and secure a future for her family.

Kitty is the eldest of the Talbots, and with the death of her father, is left responsible to provide for her younger siblings. What better way than to find a vastly wealthy husband. The twelve weeklong London Season proves to be the right place to be and be seen.

Kitty embarks on this challenge, with the help of her aunt – Kitty dons new threads, gets acquainted with the expected refinements and culture behind this society. She must succeed and for this to work, fit in and infiltrate. Not all suiters believe Kitty’s front… In fact, Lord Radcliffe sees right through Kitty’s plan and tries with all his might to foil it.

The pacing of this story was step by step and goal focused with a strong female lead. Kitty was unapologetic and practical with her needs over her wants. I would have preferred more character development and believable romance for me to buy in to marrying for money first, and love second – as this Guide does have a happy ending!

Regency era historical fiction is not my cup of tea. This book would be more suited for lovers of Jane Austen et al.

Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing me with an e-ARC of this via NetGalley.

Read if you like: enemies to lovers, closed door romance

Kitty goes to London in order to find a rich husband and save her family from poverty after the death of her parents. The book follows her exploits throughout London during the season. She befriends the de Lacey's and a humourous relationship begins.
-
Kitty was great and I appreciated how she was willing to do whatever it takes to take care of her family. I was hoping for a bit more romance, as there really wasn't any until the very end, and Kitty's sister was annoying.
-
CW: gambling, addiction, death of a parent, classism and sexism.

A lady’s guide to fortune hunting was an enjoyable book that gave a node to Jane Austin. It was prefect tag along on my vacation. A light romance, that was actually really fun. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what she comes out with next!

This was my first historical/regency romance, and I enjoyed it a lot more than expected.

What originally drew me to it was the gorgeous cover, but I thought the fortune hunter plot was fun and liked the read. Don’t know if I would read another regency romance soon, but not against picking up another book by this author in the future.

Thank you, #Netgalley, for the ARC of this title. To me, #ALadysGuideToFortuneHunting was very Austenesque in it’s approach. Kitty Talbot’s cunning is simply stunning, and she obviously loves her family very much to make the sacrifice she intends to make to keep her sisters safe. A wonderful book that I will be recommending to family, friends and customers alike!

A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting by Sophie Irwin follows Kitty Talbot. She desperately needs to marry a man with a fortune after being jilted by her betrothed. She had counted on that marriage to care for her family who are deeply in debt. Left to care for her younger sisters after her parents pass away, she knows she must forgo a love match in favor of fortune-hunting. Kitty has only twelve weeks to save her family from complete ruin. Kitty embarks on the journey to London for the Season. The problem is Lord Radcliffe sees right through her. He knows she is only after money and plans to ruin her plans. But soon Kitty and Radcliffe’s plans take a completely different turn.

This is a light-hearted, comedic historical romance. I struggled a bit to connect with the characters, though. This definitely read like a classic.

This book is like Bridgerton meets Pride and Prejudice. A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting is full of interesting characters with complex histories. I enjoyed seeing how the characters grew through the story. It’s a pleasant story, great for when you need a comfort read.

Kitty Talbot is a heroine after my own heart. This is a great historical romance for fans of Austen, and there are many references to Pride and Prejudice throughout the book.

Kitty is the eldest of 5 sisters who have lost both parents, and have been left in a mountain of debt. She has until the end of the London season to find herself a husband with enough money to support them. She finds herself a reluctant ally in the form of Lord Radcliffe, a man suffering from PTSD after coming home from the Battle of Waterloo. He is hesitant to rejoin society and take on his role as the head of his family. Their battle of wits and reluctant allyship-turned-more is a joy to read. The banter sparkles, and I laughed out loud on more than one occasion.

Although the book does lean on familiar tropes and character archetypes, there is satisfaction in reading those tropes when they are done well, and this is. There are no great surprises here, but the writing shines most when the characters are up to a bit of mischief. I enjoyed this one a lot.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy to review.

A very well written debut!
Miss. Kitty Talbot is responsible for her 4 younger sisters, a house they risk losing and a mountain of debt. With that in mind, she and her sister Cecily head to London to find a rich man for Kitty to marry. And so the story continues through twists & turns of conniving and scheming. All in the name of family. Love is not in the cards for Kitty, she must make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure her sisters future. But where would the fun be in that.
The slow burn and the constantly changing relationship between Kitty and James was incredibly satisfying. From disinterest, to enemies to lovers, I enjoyed the constant guess of their emotions. The story flowed so naturally, it s quite surprising that this is a first novel.

When Kitty Talbot's fiancé dumps her for another woman, the easy path to paying off her late father's gambling debts is blocked. Now in order to save her family from financial ruin, she must leave the countryside for London in hopes of finding a wealthy bachelor to wed before the end of the season. But t's not as easy as she thought it would be. She stumbles upon a wealthy young man who could be the perfect target, if only his older brother Lord Radcliffe didn't see right through her scheming ways!

Kitty is an unconventional heroine who will stop at nothing to see her family thrive. They haven't had it easy since their parents' scandalous courtship comes to light after their death. Kitty, being the oldest sister, must change their fate. She isn't accomplished or part of the ton, but she is determined to carve a place within upper society. I admired that in Kitty. She wasn't afraid to lie or deceive and did it because she loved her family. She didn't have time to fall in love...but it was beneficial that she did!

Her relationship with Lord Radcliffe is enjoyable! They start off as adversaries which eventually turns into a bit of a friendship. You can tell that as the season progresses and Lord Radcliffe seeks her out at every event, it is inevitable that they will end up together even if they don't see it yet. I always love escaping into Regency England and Sophie Irwin did a tremendous job of drawing the reader in. -g

What I liked:
▪️ Kitty's determination: she is a strong woman during a time when that wasn't the norm
▪️Their banter and teasing
▪️Slow burn where he falls first
▪️Kitty's love for her sisters
▪️Archie was lovable

What I didn’t like:
▪️Light on the romance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting will be the perfect book for fans of Jane Austen and Bridgerton! We meet Kitty Talbot, the eldest sister who must marry well to ensure her sisters futures. Kitty attempts to take London by storm and Kitty is relentless in her quest until she meets the handsome and rich Lord Radcliffe. I adored this book and plan on selling many copies!

A Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting was just the light, fun summer read I was looking for. With a clear nod to Pride and Prejudice, the book follows the adventures of Kitty, a young woman in desperate need of a rich husband upon being left in significant debt when her father dies. She and one of her younger sisters head off to London for "The Season", anxious to fit in and catch the eye of an eligible, rich bachelor to secure their future.

Kitty is a bold, vivacious young woman with a bit of a devil-may-care attitude. Her manipulative and cunning behaviour is motivated by the sole desire to ensure her sisters' well-being, so while her nemesis, Lord Radcliffe, sees her as heartless, the reader sees her as a sister who is willing to give up her own happiness for her family. Her exploits as she makes her way through London high society make for a fast and entertaining read, with just the right dose of chaste romance thrown in. A fun, light read for the Jane Austen fans in the crowd.

Being a lady in a disgraced household in the 1800's was not easy. Especially if there are a few sisters behind you that need an introduction into society. What is the eldest to do? Well in A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting, you pull out all the stops and use whatever connections you have to get yourself invited to all the galas and events where "ladies" are feted.
This book was an interesting read and the twists and turns as introductions are made and different characters are reviewed (with the thought of their holdings and wealth) .It will have you smiling, crying, mad as all get out and more. It really takes you on an emotional journey through past times and what was important to that generation. Glad that is not the case today!

4.5/5

With a hefty debt left by her late father, and 4 younger sisters to look out for, it has become Katherine “Kitty” Talbot’s recent mission to marry rich. At whatever cost. Throwing herself into the London season, Kitty tries her best to make a marriage of many eligible bachelors, the only problem is that one Lord Radcliffe has discovered her scheme and makes life a bit more complicated for Kitty.

So much good to say about this book! A very fun read for Bridgerton lovers and the like. It doesn’t contain the “steam” that Bridgerton does, but it does contain the plotting, scandals and classic ton gossip.

I enjoyed our 2 main characters. Kitty for sure was a nice perspective as she’s quick-witted and not vapid. Radcliffe was unexpectedly okay too. He wasn’t as toxic as I thought he would be and was glad to see his character development come naturally over time.

The reason I’m not giving this a full 5 stars is because I feel like something was missing. I also did like Irwin’s writing style, though I found it dragged at some parts. I was intrigued overall, but I could still find myself putting down the book (if that makes sense). This is a fun summer read though and would make a good addition to any beach-read list.

Did I mention enemies to lovers is my favourite trope? Because it is. And that is what this book is. Great debut novel for Sophie Irwin, and I’d be very happy to read her future works.

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting" is a fun "enemies-to-lovers" regency romance that attempts to make a bit of social commentary regarding a woman's status in society during that period as well. It is a quick read and is a great debut novel. It is filled with witty banter and comical situations with the plot moving relatively quickly. My only issue with the book is that, while I enjoyed the banter between the main female and male characters, the romance wasn't heavily explored and seemed to be resolved very quickly in the end. While we were able to get a bit of insight into the female character's feelings, how the male character overcomes his original hesitations is not explored.

It is a book that would definitely appeal to readers that like the historical romance genre and the Bridgerton series (however not steamy at all!). Overall, this was fun, but yet not exceptional book. However, I would re-read (and is why I would rate it higher)!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in one setting while out camping. I liked the characters and the storyline and I thought it gave a nod to Jane Austen which I was pleasantly surprised by. A fun and delightful little Regency romance.

Time period 1818 / Enemies to Lovers - MF - Spice 0/5

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!! My first time reading anything by Sophie Irwin. Usually I am not a fan of time period books, but this was great.

I enjoyed the quick wit, subtle sarcasm and personal growth of the characters. The stories progression was at a good pace throughout. It was just the right amount of period piece details that I was not overwhelmed.

I wanted to shout at Kitty, no don't do that, as I was pulled into their story. A slight Pride and Prejudice vibe here as well.

I really enjoyed this book. Kitty is a wonderful character who puts the welfare of her family before her own happiness. She gets judged very unfairly by Lady Radcliffe & then Lord Radcliffe. I had a pretty good idea of how the story might go once Radcliffe came on the scene but I had so much fun reading how it all unfolded. The story left me feeling so satisfied in the end and I feel like everything turned out so wonderfully.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the chance to read this most excellent book.
