oh my, this book was lovely! it was funny and touching and (despite the odd premise) relatable all at once, and I had a wonderful time reading it.

Emelie was a little quirky, but her tendency to bend over backward to please those around her hit very close to home, so seeing her growth and journey towards putting herself first throughout the book was something that not only pleased but also moved me, just as Nick’s personal history did.

I have to admit that at first I wasn’t exactly enthused—maybe because no matter how hard I tried not to compare this book to BTTM, I couldn’t help but feeling that it lacked the magic that made me fall in love with Wes and Liz. but somewhere after the 50% mark there was a breakthrough and I started having so much fun (that may or may not have eventually turned into ugly sobbing). I couldn’t put the book down after that.

overall, The Do-Over was a thoroughly enjoyable read that I would 100% recommend.

thank you Simon & Schuster and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a huge fan of Lynn Painter and the way she perfectly captures teenage romance - so sweet with characters who have a lot to learn about themselves through others! 'The Do-Over' felt very reminiscent of old romcoms like 10 Things I Hate About You or Never Been Kissed.. and I only mention those two movies because this book gave me the same feels as those did. Personally, it was a fun read and as someone who loves love.. this book just made me smile! There were some plot holes but overall I just enjoyed it for what it was. A great and sweet coming-of-age story! If you enjoyed her last YA, 'Better Than the Movies' then I'd recommend checking this book out! <3

THE DO-OVER by Lynn Painter
⭐️ rating: 4 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📖 genre: young adult, romance
tropes: Groundhog Day, instalove, "I'm only me when I'm with you"

Well, I read this book in under 24 hours if that tells you anything about my enjoyment level.
After reading both BETTER THAN THE MOVIES and MR. WRONG NUMBER by Painter, it's safe to say that she's on my auto-buy author list...& I'm glad that THE DO-OVER kept up this trend!

This book reads like a love letter to Jess Mariano in the very best way (because, as everyone knows, Team Jess is the only team to be on. You're entitled to your own opinion, but if that's NOT your opinion, you're wrong). Nick is basically a less delinquent Jess. He's surly, he's super smart, he has superior taste in music, drives a clunker, and works and thrives in the "downtown."

Here are some brief reasons why I liked this book (it's hard to say much without giving it away):
💫 The banter here is TOP NOTCH. Whether it's between Emilie and Nick or Emilie and Chris - it was impossible to not laugh out loud at their reference filled conversations (another shoutout to the Gilmore Girls series).
💫 It was honestly hilarious to me the amount of effort that the universe put in to making sure that Nick and Emilie ran into each other each day. No matter what "experiments" she ran, there was Nick.
💫 There were a lot of moments where I saw Rory & Jess in this book: whether it was Em finally losing her shit, Nick knowing all the cool, "hidden" spaces of the Downtown, etc.

I really, really enjoyed this book! And I would say that if you are both a fan of the Groundhog Day trope and are Team Jess, then it's a safe bet that you will too.

Lynn Painter’s writing is addictive! I am normally a slower reader, but I read this book so quickly because I just wasn’t able to put it down!
Nick and Emilie’s relationship and banter was so cute! Everything about their relationship felt very easy, like they were just meant to be.
I also thought the drama happening in her home life is something that a lot of kids can relate to, myself included when I was her age.

RATING: 4/5 STARS

Lynn Painter is the queen of rom-coms! THE DO-OVER was super cute and a fun, fast read. Sometimes Groundhog day stories can get a little tiresome and repetitive, but this one was fresh and the plot moved along at the perfect pace. Nick was a swoony hero and Emilie was a relatable and sweet heroine. Can't wait to read more of Lynn Painter's hits!

I am such a big fan of Lynn Painter, so I was hopeful that this would be good and it totally lived up to all my expectations! I cannot say enough good things about this book! Everything, from the characters to the plot to the setting, was absolutely perfect. Lynn Painter just knows how to write characters that you can see yourself in! I loved Emilie so much and related to her quiet, type A personality. I definitely saw myself in her persistence in being perfect to avoid creating conflict or disappointment for her parents. I love reading about characters like this finding their voice and learning to do what makes them happy as opposed to everyone around them. Also, the main love interest Nick was giving serious Jess Mariano vibes and I am 10000% here for that! I loved the interactions and banter between them, and also I was living for all the Taylor Swift references. I seriously cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who likes YA Romance! If you are a fan of her book Better Than the Movies or Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon, I think you will love this book! It was such a cute, quick read. I literally wanted to reread as soon as I finished my initial reading!

The Do Over by Lynn Painter ✨

This is such a cute, sweet, and funny YA rom com. It was a repeated cycle of laughing out loud and saying “awww”. Something that I noticed is that the author does is use Taylor Swift lyrics as sentences throughout the book, which is pretty iconic.

bookish things:
🤍chapter titles are confessions
🤍time loop
🤍playlist at the end
🤍blended family dynamics + grief rep

Oh how I adore Lynn Painter’s books. Better Than the Movies was delightful and this was just as good. I mostly binged it in two days because I didn’t want to stop reading. The Groundhog Day theme doesn’t always work for me, but I loved how it was done in the Do Over. Emilie is so relatable. I knew from their first crash that Nick would be important to her day/getting out of the cycle. I just adored their DONC. I found myself taking screenshots and highlighting so many lines. I’ve preordered myself copies as well because I need everything Lynn Painter writes in my shelf!

This is such a fun young adult follow up after Painter's previous book, Better than the Movies (one of my favorite reads of 2022!) The main character was obsessively likeable, from her fashion to her excellent taste in Taylor Swift tracks. The Groundhogs Day plotline was weaved in so well - you never got lost in semantics. Overall this is a really fun read!

"So far, this Valentine's Day has wrecked my car, revoked my fellowship, stolen my boyfriend, moved my dad far away, and possibly poisoned me. I'm going to read myself to sleep before things get worse."

I'm still doing a happy dance around my living room for getting early approval to read this!

Lynn Painter has done it again. She has delivered another masterpiece. Normally, I'm not a fan of the "groundhog day effect" but now I think it might be one of my favorite storylines EVER.

The Do-Over follows Emilie, a girl who has always lived by the rules of appeasing her divorced parents and being the good student who makes lists and plans not only for her future but for each day. Valentine's Day isn't any different. Emilie has BIG plans and a checklist to follow like finally saying the LOVE word to her boyfriend of three months.

So when she crashes her car into her grumpy standoffish yet surprisingly handsome lab partner, Nick, her perfect Valentine's Day might not be ending up so perfect. And things only get worse from there. Before she knows it, Emilie finds herself wishing for Valentines Day to be over already. But when she wakes up the next day she is shocked to learn she is stuck in some sort of time loop where she has to live the most nightmarish Valentine's Day over and over and over again. What's worse is she can't seem to shake Nick - wherever she goes there he is. Emilie can't figure out why she is stuck in this hellish loop but the longer she's stuck the more she discovers about herself and the more Nick has her wondering why she just hasn't lived in the moment.
But what will happen to Emilie once the universe stops dealing out do-overs?

This book has:

- A time loop (that has you cheering on Emilie. She is a total BAD A**)
- enemies-to-lovers
- Day of No Consequences (DONC!)
- Taylor Swift references and tattoos!
- The BEST sarcastic flirting / banter
- And a KISS that literally melts your hear (and the buiLd-up is WORTH IT!)

Emilie is the typical happy/sunshiny girl and Nick is the classic broody/surly boy. Like 100% getting Jess Mariano and Rory Gilmore vibes.

I can't say enough good things about this one! I can't wait to get my hands on this in November!
Literally ∞ / 5★

This. Book!!!!! I typically can’t stand a book that has a repeating storyline but this one was so cute! I loved both main characters so much and caught myself flying through the book just to find out what happens. A heartfelt, sweet, YA rom com that I think everyone should read!! I love it so much and can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy for my library. I highly recommend this to any who needs a quick, sweet romantic comedy! Thank you to NetGalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.

Only @lynnpainterkirkle can write a Groundhog’s Day time loop book and make me love it. The characters were so wonderful that I didn’t care that the day was repeating. I learned something new about the characters each time. There are fun pop culture references and the way Taylor Swift Easter eggs snuck in there. Nick and Emilie gave me all the laughs and all the feels. I preordered this one (out 11/15) and you should too!

Adorable! The Do-Over is an engaging, sweet story about a young woman stuck in a time loop.

Emilie is having a terrible day. She goes to bed early to ward off any additional bad luck and instead finds herself waking up to the same day - over and over again. To her disappointment, she isn't able to "fix" the day, and after a while, Emilie decides to take matters into her own hands and shake things up...

I read it in one sitting and caught myself breaking out in a smile several times due to the funny and cute banter between Emilie and Nick, the high school chemistry lab partner she seems to crash into during every iteration of her Valentine's Day on repeat.

I loved it! 4.5 stars.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy.

Lynn Painter is the kind of writer whose stories do two things simultaneously, they tug at your heartstrings while making you laugh out loud.

Emilie wakes up on Valentine's Day with a checklist of things that will make it perfect - wearing the perfect (inappropriate for cold weather) outfit, securing the perfect summer internship, and giving her perfect boyfriend, Josh, his gift and hopefully dropping the L word. But when a fender bender on the way to school starts to derail her plans, she's forced to get a ride with Nick Stark, her chem partner who barely knows she's alive, and the guy she's just rear-ended. The day is all snark, and bad news when she spies Josh cheating on her, and more bad news when she gets home. The day is a wash so she heads to her beloved Grandmother's house for some comfort and time away from her family. She's supposed to wake up in her Grandma's house...but wakes up back in her own bed, and it's Feb. 14 all over again... and in her time loop keeps meeting Nick Stark, who isn't who she thought he was, and being cheated on over and over and over. If her days keep repeating what's to stop her from going for broke and just doing and saying whatever she wants?

Each chapter starts with a confession from Emilie, and it's here you learn what she's thinking and feeling, and who she really is deep down inside. As the confessions get deeper, and sometimes darker, you learn who and what is important to her, how she sees herself, and what hurts her. As Nick plays a more prominent role in her Do-Overs you realize the universe is trying to tell Emilie something...she just needs to listen. Loved every moment of this book.

The Do-Over is a really sweet, light-hearted high school romance that follows Emilie through multiple repeated Valentines Days' as she tries to fix her wrongs and ultimately stop the time warp. Throughout her do-overs, Em deals with her moody chem lab partner, her perfect and preppy boyfriend, mean girls, and family as she is also discovering the true Emilie. I 10/10 recommend to anyone who wants a sweet and touching, light high school romance with a quirky heroine and a broody love interest. Lynn Painer's did a great job and I really enjoyed Emilie and Nick's story.

thank you so much Simon for this ARC!

4.25 stars ✨

I had a blast while reading this book. This book follows Emilie as she really does Valentine’s Day over and over again, kind of like Groundhog Day the movie. Now I absolutely love books that have the plot of repeating days, because I just love the self discovery that comes with that plot. And this book did not miss, I absolutely loved every plot from every day and how it flows. This was a bit different from the other books I read like this, because instead of the couple ending the cycle of repeated days together, Emilie was completely in this alone and had to read the consequences of her while this day. I don’t think I’ve ever write a book where that took place, and it was very refreshing. The side characters in this book were really likable, and the love interest Nick was everything a YA love interest needed to be. Nick had his own skeletons in his closet, but went along with Emilie for the ride. At first I thought he knew about the time loop and was in it with her, but it turns out he really just liked her so much that he went along with everything she had to say. I really liked the day that they spent together and found out so much about one another. Overall I just really loved the story!

This book is *literally* a Taylor Swift song - so catchy and well-written. While this book features a time loop, it doesn't last the entire book and rather ends quite chaotically. Playing with time is becoming a common plot device, but here it felt really original in its execution. We get to watch Emilie shed her type-A checklist personality and finally have FUN (annnnd get the cute loner Nick out of his shell as well). Plus as a fellow Nebraskan, I loved all of the references to the Old Market especially Zio's Pizza. Ultimately this is an amazing YA book for teens and adults alike and while this was my first Lynn Painter book, it certainly won't be my last!

Y'all, I should make a shelf that has nothing but Groundhog Day derivatives because I adore media with this plot. Each one spins it a little bit different, and I just cannot get enough. This one takes place on Valentine's Day, and Emilie is having a heckuva day. The main happenings are that she gets in a fender-bender, and she discovers her boyfriend is cheating. Over the course of the day(s), she connects with Nick, a classmate she doesn't know well - at the beginning. As the day(s) go, she starts to form a friendship with Nick and starts to find ways to connect. Emilie, of course, wonders what she needs to do to get out of the loop, but more importantly, she starts to consider what makes her happy. Again, I just love how these stories build, and this was a great addition to the sub-genre. Thanks to NetGalley for the early look at this November 2022 release!

Thank you so much to Simon and Schuster for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I'm convinced Lynn Painter is the queen of writing hilarious, joyful romances with tons of fun quips from all her characters. The Do-Over is just that, combined with the Groundhog Day trope and an all-day teen escapade à la Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Every one of Lynn Painter's romances so far has also succeeded in making me shed several tears, and in The Do-Over, she did so during the several somber scenes that discuss the grief after the death of a sibling, fear or abandonment, divorce, infidelity, and more.

I think where The Do-Over fell short for me, is that our main character, Emilie, felt like a carbon copy of every other protagonist written by Lynn Painter--the sunshine-y, full-of-life, golden girl. I also had a hard time believing that Nick fell in love with Emilie after spending just one day with her, considering he barely spoke to or acknowledged her beforehand. Otherwise, I think this book was still a solid YA romance and I think fans of Lynn's previous novels will definitely enjoy The Do-Over.
