A funny clever read for all ages. All children want a pet to have fun with and this little boy is no different. He is pretty sure that he wants a dog but finds himself with a cat and a very special friend.

It takes a little for him to warm up to his "pet dog" but cats do have a way of worming into your heart. It will worm its way in your little reader as well.

A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

This was really cute, and I could see it being a hit with the 2-5 crowd. This book would also be a good way to explain to a child why you can have certain pets and not others. The storyline was simple and easy to follow, and the illustrations added to that simplicity.

Very cute book that both my 6 year old grandson and myself enjoyed. He thought it was truly funny to name a cat ‘Doggie.’ Well illustrated. What is not to love when it comes to animal books and little children. Definitely a good book for 4 -7 year old. Thank you to Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for the advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Great book! Super cute. Not too long and not too much text on each page. Lots of great illustrations.

This is a story about a little boy who really, really, REALLY, wants a dog, but life ends up giving him a cat. After some time and adjustments, the boy starts liking the cat. Cute and simple art. Easy to follow word choice for children. A theme of not getting what you want, but having it work out in the end.

Doggie
4 stars

This is a charming book with lovely illustrations. Our main character really wants a dog. Mom doesn't want to have any of it. The family adopted a stray cat, a boy, later named Doggie. Unfortunately, Doggie the cat isn't what the boy wants; however, Doggie is persistent and slowly wins over the boy's heart. I think this would be a great library pick. At this age, they read so many books.

Thank you, NetGalley and Clavis Publishing, for providing me with a digital ARC for an honest review.

The formatting did not work great on kindle (and the pdf was unable to be opened) but this looks like an adorable story about a cat named "Doggie" who refuses to follow commands but is still a boy's best friend. Fun story. The illustrations are adorable.

Our main character really wants a dog, and after his mother tries to talk him down to a goldfish, she brings in a stray...cat. Lol, she just really didn't want a DOG.

Doggie the cat isn't what the boy wants, but Doggie has a LOT of loyalty. The happy ending of accepting Doggie probably won't convince your OWN little one to settle on a lesser pet, but it makes for a cute read.

The artwork here can sometimes be sparse. There are a couple pages that are corner-to-corner illustrated, but most pages are little vignettes, isolated images with maybe a bit of pastel shading behind. I prefer a bit more coverage.

A good one to pick up from your local library.

This was a very cute yet quick book for little ones. I read this to my daughter (5 years old) who absolutely loved it. She thought it was funny how the boy named the cat Doggie. I also love the fact that a little life lesson was slipped in there. I think it shed some light on my daughter who learned that you may not always get what you want, but that isn’t always a bad thing and sometimes it works out for the best. This book is one that I would definitely recommend!

A quick and pleasant read, for those just starting out on tackling whole picture books by themselves. It's about a boy adamant he wants a dog, until a cat comes along. After making sure he tries to train the moggie to be a doggie, he learns how good a compromise, a second-best choice, may be, and how we don't always really want what is exactly right for us. Deep themes, then, but done really quite well – although the pet pester power might go through the roof as a response.

This was such a cute story. An adorable book about a friendship that came about unexpectedly.

How sometimes changing your expectations can make you happier than you thought possible and you can make a friend in the process.

This was a sweet book that I cannot wait to read to my son.

This is a beautiful and wonderfully illustrated book about a boy who wants a dog, but gets a cat instead. I am a huge animal lover and this book teaches you to keep an open mind about things (and pets.) my nephew will love this book!

This book is adorable. I remember growing up, I always wanted a dog but my mom said the same thing as his mom. They are too much work. Instead we had a lot of outdoor cats. I loved those cats so much!

Now as an adult, I have a dog and moms were right. They are so much work! I also have 2 indoor and outdoor cats that are a lot like doggie. They love to follow us around.

This book is a great example of not always getting what we want but maybe being surprised that we enjoy it anyways!

A lovely illustrated book telling the story of a young boy who wants a dog, but his mother refuses - saying that they are too much work and responsibility. A cat shows up on their doorstep on a rainy night, the boy is at first disappointed, as the cat is not a dog and then tries to pretend that it is a dog.

This story really does emphasise the idea of not judging something by its cover, and did remind me a little bit of Pugicorn by Mathilda Rose (Albeit a lot more grounded in reality!) and my daughter was really absorbed in this story.

I loved this sweet story about a little boy who wanted a dog but got a cat. Watch as these two become best friends. The illustrations are absolutely adorable and go so well with the text. This story offers a little reminder, maybe even for adults, that the unexpected can sometimes turn out to be the very best thing.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Clavis publishing for this title. All opinions are my own.

I am a dog person not a cat person so I can totally relate to the little boy in this adorable book. After reading the story, the author may have converted me into a cat lover too.
