This simple book is a counting story about 10 mice that come together to raise a very special treat in the garden from seed to fruit. The illustrations are interesting and eye catching. I don’t think we’ll be around in 20 years but it’s pretty nice right now.

This is a book that not only counts from 1 to 10, but also teaches a bit about planting and caring for a garden. The mice, plant, scare away moles, guard the plants from the rabbits, water and harvest. The illustrations are adorable. I love when a book anthropomorphizes with the mice being so cute, in dress and characteristics in this one. My big issue was the cadence. I could not read this and develop any type of rhythm while reading aloud to my grandkids. The illustrations were very detailed and busy, so we spent most of our time looking at them and talking about what we saw. The ending reminded me a bit of The Little Red Hen as mice seemed to come out of the woodwork to eat part of the giant submarine sandwich. I'm not sure where they got the bread though. Not sure I would recommend this one as there are so many other great counting books out there.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

A Special Treat is a cute, rhyming book to teach children how to count from 1 to 10. The Little mice want a treat so they get some seeds and do some harvesting so they can have a celebration. The rhyming was a little out in places and didn't flow as smoothly as I'd have liked - it came across more poetic in places than rhymes. However this is sure to be a fun counting book to encourage children to count together and lots of things to spot in the busy illustrations throughout the book.

I enjoyed this counting book with all of the different descriptions of the mice and their activities. I think the number of things going on in each page might be a little overwhelming to get the counting message across to my young toddlers, but I'm sure they would enjoy looking at the illustrations and hearing the story of the mice!

A delightful counting book with mice planting and harvesting. So much for you and your little reader to absorb. A book that binds parents and children.

Thanks to Netgalley and Clavis for a free digital copy.

I normally love a counting a rhyming book, but unfortunately this one fell flat for me. The illustrations aren't as cutesy as I prefer in a picture book and the story didn't feel like it had a point.

Some mice have a get-together where they scare away the moles, plant crops and have a huge jamboree for them all when things have been harvested. I liked the sentiment of this, but the delivery left a lot lacking. Yes, the mice increase in number one by one, so there is a counting element to the story, but the rhymes and metre are really poor at times. The art isn't a heck of a lot better – the gamut of things we could have been poring over to check all the detail just becomes a bonkers gymnastic frog, and the end image of the party where all the mice surround a humongous veggie sandwich just made me think they'd been and bought a footlong.

Counting books are so much fun and this one doesn't disappoint! The bouncy words will engage children and make story time even more delightful. I predict this book will be read again and again and again!

I love the details to the pages of this children's book. There is so much to look at. You could spend a great amount of time looking at each pages, identifying things with a child.

It is so cute to see mice, frogs, birds, etc. dressed in human clothes, doing human things!

The story has a unique rhyming system with numbers. It is like each page number is being used to fit into the rhyming.

The rhyming did seem to stop toward the end of the book, which was weird. I'm not sure why they didn't keep going.

All in all, this was a cute little book.

This picture book is a counting book where each page has more mice looking for their special treat. I think that the pictures and the predictable text will be great for young children just learning to count and who enjoy sharing reading with the adults in their lives. I would recommend this book for parents of children in the age 2-5 range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this sweet book!

A Special Treat is such a special treat! The illustrations by Monty Lee remind of Richard Scary's books and illustrations and really brought on a feeling of nostalgia while reading. The cute rhymes and sweet message of working together and cultivating a harvest are perfect for young students!

I could see teachers incorporating this book into a science lesson about plants or even a writing lesson on "how-to" stories. A Special Treat is a versatile book that would be a delightful addition to any home and classroom library!

Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

I really liked this one. It would work well with a science unit about plants. It is also a counting book. It tells the story of a couple of mice who plant seeds and tend the plants. Then they harvest and cook food to share with others. Very cute!
