A fun children's book that talks to loneliness in children and the value of pets in our lives.
A little boy who has been adopted is happy bit lonely on his new home. His new mom takes him for a fun day but he is still lonely until they come across an animal shelter. They decide to volunteer. He has so much fun playing with the dogs and feels less lonely that night at home. He makes special friends with one dog in particular and asks to adopt his new friend. He gets his wish and is happy with his new best friend.
The artwork was really fun and colorful drawing the reader into the story.
I loved the resources and information included at the end of the book to help educate the reader.

Just about every boy and girl loves dogs. How could they not love a book which depicts a child’s joy over getting his very own dog, his very own best friend. My six year old was enthralled by the story and the big, glistening pictures. I was provided this book by NetGalley and Baker and Taylor Pawprints Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Both my 10yo son and I were absolutely delighted by this sweet story. The story centres on a young Sikh boy, his puppy, and the adventures they get up too whilst playing and volunteering at the local animal shelter with his Mum. When Jeet moves to a new town he struggles to find friends and becomes lonely. To try and help Jeet settle in, his Mum suggests they volunteer at the local animal shelter. While at the animal shelter, Jeets life is changed forever by meeting and becoming friends with a sweet and happy puppy, I loved how diverse this book was, and how it combined different elements such as talking about emotions & how they affect us, and ways we can help feel better by helping others. The illustrations were bright and wonderful, the relationship between Jeet and the dog was incredibly endearing and I loved how supportive his Mum was. My son found it easy to read and the lovely illustrations kept him entertained throughout the whole book. A lovely one for any home, classroom and library.

This early reader leveled book tells the story of a boy named Jeet who has been adopted and has recently moved to a new school. He worries about making new friends, so to distract him from these worries, his mom suggests volunteering at an animal shelter. He connects with a sweet dog he names Fudge and he is very excited to go back to volunteer again soon. In the end, Fudge finds the perfect forever home, just like Jeet. I love that even though this is a leveled book it does not feel that way. The content is interesting for children and doesn't feel monotonous or repetitive like many beginning reader books feel. I could definitely see young children picking up this book again and again. The font is clear and fairly large, and there are usually only 2-3 lines of text per page. I also love that the characters are diverse and that Jeet's culture, from his clothing to the names of his family members, are positively represented in the story. I would definitely recommend this book to parents and teachers of new readers in the age 4-8 range. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

This is a very cute book that tackles a couple of tough issues for kids. It refers to moving away from friends and being adopted. However, the real topic focused on in this book is friendship. This book is well written and the pictures are beautiful. I recommend this book for families that want to talk about these topics with their children.

This was such a fun beginning reader book. I loved meeting sweet, adorable Jeet and his family. Like many kids, Jeet loves animals, so his community service work at the animal shelter and his desire to adopt a dog will likely be very interesting and/or relatable to readers. This is also a great book about friendship, family and belonging. Highly recommended for children that are starting to read.

ANIMALS, ADOPTION and AWESOMENESS!!

There is NOTHING better than a sweet story about friendship- ESPECIALLY when it involves animals!
I thought this was a perfect children's story that not only emphasizes the benefits of the bond that can be created between a child and a pet- but also promotes responsibility.

Jeet is sad and lonely after moving away from his friends and no matter what his Bebbe and Bapu (mom & dad) do, he's having a hard time adjusting to his new home.. Walking by an animal shelter one day, Bebbe asks if Jeet wants to volunteer as it's a great way to serve their community- OF COURSE HE DOES. JEET LOVES DOGGOS!
As Jeet meets the dogs- some are sleeping, eating, playing and jumping- one catches his eye, and after one lick to the face, IT'S LOVE! Jeet names her Fudge and tells her goodbye as he leaves to go home. I don't know about you, but once an animal hooks my heart, I'm done-for! Jeet cannot think of anything but Fudge and wants to tell all his friends about her.

What follows is what I know to be the natural process of falling in love with an animal, and BEGGGGING my parents to bring it home. Jeet was adopted, and wants to give Fudge a loving home just like he has.

I really loved the premise of this story- Jeet overcoming his loneliness and sadness with the bond he creates with Fudge, the adorable stray puppy from the shelter that he is going to volunteer at. The themes of adoption, friendship, responsibility and serving your community are so important and told in an easy to understand way- perfect for kiddos.

At the end there is a section that lists facts and info on the effects a pet can have on children. My only complaint is that I do not believe pets AUTOMATICALLY teach children responsibility- I think that there should be a discussion about how much work an animal is, and I think this list would benefit from having a disclaimer added that pets should NEVER be given as a birthday/Christmas or any other holiday gift. There are so many statistics that show those animals given as gifts end up in shelters more than the pets that kids EARNED through showing they are responsible enough to take care of them.

Beautiful illustrations as well, this is a super sweet story that I'd definitely recommend to ages 2+- but be warned, you may be pestered for a pet after;-)

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and illustrator and publisher for the DRC!

Jeet and Fudge is a sweet book about a boy and his dog. Jet is a young, adopted Sikh boy who is lonely and sad after leaving his old friends to move to a new town. His mom tries to cheer up and eventually suggests volunteering and serving at an animal shelter. It's there that he meets Fudge, a cute brown furry dog and eventually his forever friend.

This book would be a great diverse story to have in a classroom. There are very few stories with boys wearing patkas (the Sikh head covering for boys) as the main character and I can't imagine how excited young children who do wear any sort of head covering might be when seeing someone like them at the center of the story! I could see teachers using this story during social studies lessons about citizenship and serving the community and even during science lessons to discuss the needs of living things (in this case, dogs). Young students would find it easy to make connections to Jeet's and Fudge's relationship!

What a fun book! Thank you NetGalley and Paw Prints Publishing for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Jeet and Fudge tells the tale of Jeet, a boy who was adopted, who wants a dog of his own. I really loved the illustrations and the fun Jeet has with the dog Fudge. I also appreciated the information about how pets can help children and facts about Sikhs at the end of the book.
