Restore My Soul my Janice McWilliam is a theological approach to rest. I enjoyed this because it was not only solid theology but mental health combined. Janice gives a practical approach where faith and mental health cross. This is a great read for anyone who has an open heart to understand the God given gift of rest and the great impact it has on daily life!

Restore My Soul: Reimagining Self-Care for a Sustainable Life by Janice McWilliams is written by a therapist and spiritual director. Taking better care of yourself is a key theme in the book. She writes, “an unhealthy soul will exhaust you far, far more than a restored one.“ This book guides the reader toward restoration. She helps her readers reimagine self-care. I was immediately confused because I do not follow Enneagram theories and the “repressed-centers” theory.

Ms. McWilliams grabbed my attention again with the “flaws in Barbie-style” self-care. I appreciate her many Scripture references about taking care of yourself. Her writing style is authoritative.

The author tells interesting stories from her therapy chair while respecting each patient. She demonstrates compassion for people who need soul care.

Restore My Soul: Reimagining Self-Care for a Sustainable Life, by Janice McWilliams, is a book you won’t want to pass up. This is such a practical, informative, insightful book that helps you manage your thoughts and thereby emotions, truly understand what self-care looks without the often prescribed topical suggestions, and find peace amidst the chaos of life.

Janice McWilliams is a licensed therapist and her writing is succinct and practical, filled with humorous and poignant anecdotes that make her points clear. This was a refreshing and truly helpful read, and one I highly recommend.

I like how practical this book is. Whole chapters on developing skills needed to manage your thoughts, live well with your emotions, establish self-restoring rhythms, and live a fulfilling life are offered here. I highlighted a lot of passages especially in the chapter on thoughts, and plan to go through this book more thoroughly at a later date.

The author writes really well and includes a lot of anecdotes and stories from her years as a therapist. There is some basis on Enneagram but this is not apparent nor necessary in understanding any of the information. (An appendix on soul restoration by Enneagram types can be found at the end of the book.)

5 stars from me. Really worthwhile, especially if you want more rest and fulfillment in your life.
