Dr. Michael Stein provides an insightful, thought-provoking read regarding why kindness matters when dealing with patients and their families. Kindness and compassion are necessary in patient care, but these qualities are often lacking due to the increasing demands felt by our healthcare professionals. Doctors today are strapped with fully booked schedules, pressures with insurance billing, and edicts from their supervisors as to their productivity standards. However, as explained by Dr. Stein, displaying kindness does not require an inordinate amount of time, but can just be spending a couple of minutes actively listening to them and taking the time to address any concerns that they have expressed in a compassionate way. Also, understanding that when a patient may present as combative or argumentative, it may just indicate that he/she is scared, and just taking a couple of minutes to listen and explain, may help the relationship. As we will all be patients, perhaps with a chronic illness requiring frequent medical visits, this was a good read for both consumers of medical care and medical providers. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
