This book is a fun and whimsical contemporary romance. As suggested by the title, there are witches in this story creating a light fantasy element in a modern world.
For some reason, this book gave me hints of "The House in the Cerulean Sea" by T.J. Klune but adult. Definitely adult. More than adult. I think it was the similarity in the charm of the different characters and their unique powers. The settings were also extremely cozy and charmingly described.
The romance in this book was steamier than I expected based on the cover (I know, I know...my fault for judging a book by its cover) but I'm not complaining. That being said, do not go into this book expecting it to have a PG rating because it definitely does not *fans self*.
I'm interested in continuing this series because it was a fun read and a very unique kind of read for the contemporary romance genre.
***I received an e-ARC of this novel from Valentine PR in exchange for an honest review.***
I love some of Avery's books, and I do know she has a very specific sense of humor, so going into this I was expecting a bit of ridiculous good fun. I liked the general idea, but it was just too much going on for me. I unfortunately did not finish reading this one, because of that. I may try it again when I'm in the mood for something like this.
A witchy rom-com with fun banter and spice!
I immediately wanted to read this book after seeing the cover and reading the blurb and overall I really enjoyed this book! Tilda is an outre (non-magic person) in a family of extremely powerful witches and finds herself on yet another blind date with her extremely attractive nemesis (Gil). When Tilda accidentally causes a glitch in her sister's spell, she turns to Gil and her group of friends that are labeled as outcasts like her.
This book features a lot of internal monologue from Tilda and I felt it added a lightness to the story and helped the reader understand and get to know this character. I would've liked to see a little more background of Gil and Tilda's relationship prior to their first meeting in this book to really understand their relationship and how it developed into what it was. I loved the world that this story was set in and how it felt extremely modern and witchy. There were also several spicy scenes which were well written and fit with the moment in the book.
For me, this was a great mix of contemporary/pnr romance and I would read future books in this series!
Quirky, but cute story.
I am intrigued by this new series. It was cute, quirky, and fun. I did feel like it took a little too long to get to the heart of the story though. There was a bit too much back and forth with Tilda and Gil. But once the action really starts - it pulled me right in.
Tilda is a non-witch in a powerful witch family and Gil is playing on both sides of the paranormal world. While they don't seem to be right for each other on paper, their chemistry is through the roof. We learn why that is later on in the book.
They go through some wacky shenanigans and have to join together to truly bring justice to the witching world. Overall a fun read.
I voluntarily requested and read an uncorrected advance reader copy.
Witcha Gonna Do is one of the spiciest romcoms I’ve read all year! It’s quirky, magical, bingeable, and fast-paced. From the moment that I began reading this paranormal romance, I’ve been unable to focus on anything. Flynn creates characters with such magnetic chemistry you might even think they were bewitched. 😉 Witcha Gonna Do is an open-door, steamy enemies to lovers romantic comedy that will leave you wanting more!
Thank you, Berkley & Avery Flynn for the gifted e-arc.
Happy Pub Day to Witcha Gonna Do!
Tilda comes from a long line of influential and powerful witches, but she herself was born with no magical abilities and overall bad luck. Her latest unlucky streak? She keeps getting set up with Gil, who she cannot stand. But when she accidentally makes her sister’s spell go wrong, and literally freezes her whole family, she has to partner with Gil to save her family.
This book was full of steam, humor and heart. I always love Avery Flynn’s writing style and how her hot mess characters make me laugh out loud at times. Tilda was no different. She definitely is the black sheep of the family, and manages to get into some interesting situations. She got thrown for a loop when she met Gil, and their banter was incredible. The way they fell for each other was so sweet and their chemistry was on fire. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to more from this series!
Thanks to Berkley Publishing for the advance copy.
Witcha Gonna Do is the first book in Avery Flynn’s Witchinton series. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I liked the characters, the humor, and the supernatural elements. I thought the premise was intriguing too. On the other hand, I wanted…more.
The book as a whole was fun and entertaining, and I liked the premise a lot. I also liked that there was so much humor throughout the story. There were some comments and scenes that had me laughing out loud. Tilda, in particular, has a great sense of humor. However, I wish the characters, romance, and world-building had more depth. I wanted to know more about the unique world and the people who inhabited it. This is the first book in the series, so I have a feeling some of these elements will be developed more in the next books. The narrative style also kind of bothered me. I’m not a fan of narrators who talk to the reader. Breaking down the fourth wall works in some instances. In this case, it was a bit off-putting for me.
Tilda is an interesting protagonist. She’s a witch from a super powerful family, yet she has no powers (that she knows of). She is part of a magical misfits support group, and she is shocked when she accidentally curses her whole family. Unfortunately, to break the curse Tilda has to work with a man who irritates and annoys her. Gil knows Tilda is hiding her power, and he is tasked with figuring out what her power is. He has an interesting back story too, though I wish we learned more about it.
The romance between Tilda and Gil went from enemies-to-lovers to insta-love rather quickly, which surprised me, especially considering how much animosity Tilda felt towards Gil at the start. That being said, their romantic scenes are pretty sexy, and their chemistry is fantastic.
I think readers who are looking for a quick, cute, and light paranormal romance with a different narrative style might enjoy Witcha Gonna Do. Thanks to Berkeley Books for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
This book was so cute and fun! I loved getting lost in Tilda's world! Gil keeps showing up in her path and she's getting tired of it. He's grumpy and doesn't like her .... or does he?! I liked how the reader knows a little more about Gil than Tilda does and how their story unfolded. I liked getting to know Tilda and the Sherwood family. They are a prominent family and kind of a big deal. The social media frenzy around them can sometimes work out to Tilda's benefit! And the chemistry between Tilda and Gil was palpable through the pages. I couldn't read this book fast enough and recommend!
What’s worse than being the magicless daughter of one of the most powerful women in Witchingdom? Being set up on blind dates with one of the worst, most arrogant men over and over and over again. All Tilda wants to do is to run her family’s social media account and find someone to love her despite her magical failings. Instead, she gets Gil Connolly, a sexy archeology professor with a permasnarl hotness.
But all is not what it seems, Gil has secrets and Tilda’s family has been keeping secrets from her. When all those hidden truths are about to blow up in their faces, they have no choice but to work together to save Tilda’s family and all of Witchingdom.
I feel like this book was written specifically for my tastes. From the very beginning when Tilda starts addressing the reader casually I was hooked. Including the reader into the narration can be very messy and feel weird but Avery Flynn pulled it off expertly.
Tilda is the black sheep, the outcast, the one everyone watches just waiting for her to mess up and fail and yet she manages to keep believing the best in everyone. She’s a mixture of insecurities and confidence, ready to believe herself less because of her lack of magical ability but at the same time not letting herself be beaten down with that knowledge. Even before the secrets behind her lack of magic are revealed, she manages to grow confidence *because* she’s different and how those differences give her the edge within a society that relies heavily on magic.
With Gil’s help, Tilda and her magical misfit friends plan the ultimate heist to save Tilda’s family. From face-offs with a witch-eating troll to sexy train rides this story has a little bit of everything. The world the author created is a rich parallel to our world, so similar and yet so different in a way you don’t question it. There were a few moments when references to our reality were mentioned and it was a little jarring to be tugged back to reality. And if the book itself wasn’t enough to get me to keep reading, the way the epilogue was written is guaranteed to get me to read the next book. While it tells us how everything goes in the very end, it gives us nothing of how it got there and my curiosity is burning. 10/10 will be snagging Book 2 as soon as I can.
Unfortunately Witcha Gonna Do? was not for me.
The writing style took me out of the story a lot, along with the constant fourth wall breaks. This read as a middle grade or young adult read to me. There was also a lot of info dumping. It became confusing because so much information about the world and the characters were being presented at once that it was a bit difficult to follow.
The story reminded me of Encanto, if Encanto was a steamy romcom. I liked the idea but felt it wasn't executed well. Again, I think this book suffered from having too much going on.
Perhaps if some things were cut out or given more room to breath I would have liked this more.
Sadly, a fun idea that I think needed a few more drafts. The tell-all, breaking the fourth wall approach has been done better; it seemed like a zero draft here.

Tilda Sherwood is a member of one of the most powerful witching families in Witchingdom, even though she herself has no powers. She’s what they call an outre, or a witch with no magic. When she isn’t busy managing her family’s social media account, she’s out looking for love. But somehow, she keeps getting matched with her nemesis, Gil. What she doesn’t know is that Gil is a double agent trying to keep his family safe by proving that Tilda is who she says she Digging up dirt on her and her powerful family is the only way he can get his family out of exile and somewhere the Council can’t find them, but his feelings for her are starting to get in the way of his mission.
I love witchy romance and high fantasy, so this hit the mark for me. It’s a fun, small-town, enemies-to-lovers romance with great chemistry and hilarious banter among the main characters. The world-building is top-notch, and I loved getting thrown into its chaos right away. Full of magical creatures, a government conspiracy, a heist, and a high-speed chase involving a train, this book felt fresh and exciting, and I couldn't put it down! Flynn snuck in some very steamy, open-door scenes, too, which you all know is what I’m really here for.
While this book is light and fun, there is a LOT going on and very little explanation about the who and why of this land. I’m still confused about a couple of things and this world. I’m intrigued enough after reading the teaser for the next book that I’ll definitely be picking it up, though, and hopefully, some of my questions will be answered.
Overall, I enjoyed Tilda and Gil’s story, and I look forward to reading more from this author. Thank you, Berkley Romance, NetGalley, and Valentine PR, for my advanced copy! Witcha Gonna Do is available today.
Wasn't a huge fan of the characters breaking the third wall - it felt odd at time. I enjoyed the dual POVs but something still felt lackluster.
Romance was okay - didn't feel a huge connection was made between the two main characters but overall enjoyable.
A witchy romance with hints of mystery and spice.
I love fantasy and romance. Romantasy is probably my favorite genre. If you need an escape this genre is your place. Witcha Gonna Do takes place in the world of Witchingdom! Part modern world, part magic with spells & unicorn shifters and part dystopian. There are witches who walk their familiar squirrels on leashes, while others scroll witchy social media! A truly unique setting.
Witchingdom has a power vacuum with the Sherwoods at the top as the most magical of all witchy families. Our narrator Tilda, is a Sherwood but she’s an outre - meaning she has no magic. She lives in a magical world with a whole host of crazy characters, mean girls and her own close set of magical misfits that get caught up in unique antics. Keeping the story on edge is the insight into an evil government organization just beyond reach that threatens to do whatever they need to keep the magical balance.
The writing was done from a dual points of view, with Tila and Gil narrating the story directly to the reader. I think the breaking of the third wall was the reason I had such a difficult time getting into this book. At times it made me laugh; like we were friends sharing a funny story or heartfelt moment while at others it took me out of the moment. There as quite a bit of chaos in the story. This is the beginning of a series set in the world, so maybe that is why the book had an all over the place feel.
Gil & Tilda’s story is a wild ride with magical trolls, a robbery heist, family dynamics and discovering if this all encompassing feeling is a spell or more.

𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, heist, oposite attract, supernatural powers
I can say that I liked it. This is the first book I read by this author, and I am curious to see what happens in the next book.
Tilda is a member of the most powerful wizarding family in Wrightsville, but she is null, having no magic. She keeps getting set up on dates with Gil, a wizard she can't stand. When Tilda accidentally manages to freeze her family, she is lost and needs all the help to find a solution to unfreeze her family.
Gil is a bit arrogant at first, but that is until you really get to know him. His past is not a good one, but he does everything possible to save his parents.
Tilda and Gil make a good team, but also a couple that complement each other. Both change and grow during the story.
One small thing that didn't really work for me was when Tilda addressed the reader. But getting over that I really enjoyed it.
Thank you Avery Flynn and Valentine PR for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Hours wasted of my life thinking I might see something you guys are missing since I have 20/20 vision but I was wrong (Surprised? no). this book was trying so hard to be funny, to be romantic (no chemistry between the characters) and enemies to lovers. The book started off with “Hi. *waves.* That’s me” and decided to continue reading. I was desperate to get out of my reading slump and it did not help. I did not care for anything that was happening, there was a lot going on with the fantasy plot that I lost care. I have to mention that the main characters, Tilda and Gil don’t hide anything from us they tell us all their thoughts and I mean ALL OF THEM. And their rambles were exhausting. The writing style was very immature and unpolished.
All in all, the book fell flat for me. maybe it will appeal to some people.
Thank you Valentine PR $ NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
The best part of this book was the two open-door smut scenes. It felt like a seventeen-year-old was telling this overly sexy story about witches and couldn't decide what size her boobs were.
Smut = Good
Everything else = Trash
I have no other comments.
I was provided this arc, all opinions are my own.
Things I love: Broody professor types, witty leading ladies, cozy witchy vibes, zingy persiflage, and heists.
And as it happens, Avery Flynn’s “Witcha Gonna Do?” – the first novel in a new series – delivers every single one of those things.
The story follows Tilda Sherwood, a member of a powerful family of witches who seems to not have any powers at all, and Gil Connolly, the very hot, very powerful with the local matchmaker keeps setting her up with, but whom she can’t stand. But when a magical accident occurs at the Sherwood mansion, Gil and a few of Tilda’s friends set off to steal a book from the Sherwoods’ sworn enemies.
This book is a ton of fun and I absolutely adored both Tilda and Gil. Flynn does drop you right into the story, so though this is the first in a series, there isn’t a lot of worldbuilding or drawn-out character introductions – you just learn as you go, which is intriguing, but also sometimes left me feeling as if I was missing something (though I wasn’t!).
Even so, this fast-paced book really got its hooks in me when the heist planning began in earnest, even more so when things began heating way, way up with our main characters, and I knew I’d be sticking around the series when a couple of members from the Sherwoods’ rival family came into the picture.
Overall, this is quick, fun read full of quippy dialogue that lead to laugh-out-loud moments, and characters that quickly feel like friends. And I’m looking *very* forward to the next book!

With a Gonna Do? is the best witchy rom-com I’ve ever read. I honestly didn’t expect to love it so much but oh my I’m so glad I did!
Being the first book I’ve read from Avery Flynn, it’s also my introduction to her writing and I adored it! She makes you feel as though you’re casting spells with the characters and getting into all sorts of troubles. It’s witty, full of delicious tension and has an incredibly delightful cast of characters. It’s fast to read and if you’re not careful you’ll be done in a second. But make sure you enjoy every second of it because it’s just that good!
Matilda Grace Sherwood is a witch with no powers. Not only that, but she is the only member of a powerful family of witches who is considered an outré to her people. But while Tilda's magical life is less than stellar, she hopes to find someone who will love her for herself, and not the influence of her family...
Gil Connolly drives Tilda absolutely crazy... he's full of himself, too sexy for his own good, and Tilda has made it very clear that she wants nothing to do with him... so why has she been set up with him on her last THREE blind dates???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Witcha Gonna Do? was a super cute, quirky and fun, opposites attract romance! Tilda and Gil may be nemeses, but while they keep running into each other, keeping their lips to themselves just keeps getting harder and harder. And when Tilda needs Gil's help... she may just discover way more than she was ever bargaining for...
Tilda came to accept her lack of witch powers a long time ago, but living a life under the watchful eye of Witchington is a constant struggle. Her accident-prone existence is constant fodder for social media, and just once, Tilda would like to be seen for being more than the black sheep of her family.
Gil may have his reasons for seeking out Tilda, but they have nothing to do with wanting her exposed. Working as a double agent between the council and the resistance, the lives of Gil's parents are at stake... and Tilda's unusual lack of powers just might be the key to saving his family...
This book was such an entertaining and fun read! I loved Tilda and Gil's antagonistic relationship, and the discoveries they make about each other along the way. With a slightly suspenseful plot twist, Tilda is in for a big surprise when it comes to her role as the weakest member of her family...
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
