It was so much fun to revisit the Scythe world through this book of short stories. While I enjoyed some stories more so than others, they were all winners. "The First Swing" was a definite favorite, as well as "Meet Cute and Die."
A wonderful addition to the original trilogy.

This was so much fun! Definitely a great read for fans of the Scythe series. Some stories were better than others, but I was just so excited to be back in this world. I need a book 4 now!

I think one of the biggest issues with short story collections is that some are really great and others are just alright. Some of these really had me frantically turning the page to see what would happen next (A Death of Many Colors, Unsavory Row, A Martian Minute) and some were really boring (Never Work with Animals and Cirri) while the rest were entertaining but just alright. I read everything Neal Shusterman because I typically really enjoy all of his stories. I really enjoyed some and will continue to read future stories.

If you haven’t read the Arc of a Scythe series by Neal Shusterman, stop now and go read those 🙂. This collection of short stories from the Scythe universe scratched an itch I had to spend more time in that universe. For the uninitiated, in this world, everything is run by the Thunderhead, an omniscient AI which has made a safe world for all. Because it is now almost impossible to die, a collection of killers, named Scythes exist outside of the Thunderhead’s purview to kill people at their discretion. This is the backdrop of these short stories.

As you can imagine, this setup sometimes leads to horrifying and haunting images and themes. By shining a spotlight on death and murder but in a moral way, some of these stories will stick with me for long after my reading.

If you’re looking for YA that has an amazing world built around it and now cannon stories to back it up, this is the book for you.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster for providing an e-Arc of Gleanings by Neal Shusterman for my review.

I have yet to recommend Arc of the Scythe titles to an eighth grade student where they have not blasted through the entire trilogy (Scythe is my favorite book to recommend to teens and grown-ups alike). I think Gleanings is the perfect concept - a collection of short stories/novellas to explain back stories co-written by amazing authors - and I want more. Some of the stories were so carefully crafted that I couldn't quite make the connection until the end, and I did want a little more of Rowan and Citra. It was satisfying to read Scythes Curie's and Goddard's stories. So Neal Shusterman, if you're reading my review, by some chance, I WANT MORE! And now I want to reread the original trilogy again, knowing what I know. Thank you to #NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to preview #Gleanings - I. Loved. It SO much that I drove to B&N on pub day to get access to the extra story!

Scythe was one of my favorite books, and it is a trilogy that I always recommend to students. I was excited to see Gleanings, and I know that it will not disappoint fans of the series. This collection of short stories allows readers to get glimpses into the lives of other characters and to live in the world of the Scythedom for a little longer.

I can't get enough of this world. I love the characters and the plot of this story. It keeps me on the edge of my seat and I never know where its going. I was scared of the size of this book but I read it so quickly and I loved it.

What a great way to re-enter the world of the Scythedom again! I finished the Arc of a Scythe series in January, and though I've definitely forgotten some details, the world is one I will likely never forget.

All of the stories were well-paced, and while the links to the core storyline were more obvious in some than in others, I thought they were all quite fun (though I was missing a Citra cameo!). Would recommend.

Whether you are missing the world of Scythe, or simply love good writing, Gleanings is for you.

Shusterman and the team of contributing authors succeeded in adding to this previously established world, expanding on its foundations without feeling like an unnecessary addition.

In this book you will find backstories on previously introduced characters, learn about famous scythes from other regions, see consequences of actions taken during the original series, and explore the future of humanity that book 3 left off on.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to revisit this world. The stories were engaging and left me again wanting more. Scythe is one of my favorite trilogies and I firmly believe it is made better with this addition.

While I believe anyone could read this book, please note that that are HUGE spoilers for the series included if you have not already read those books.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing and Netgalley for the advanced review copy.

The Arc of the Scythe is one of the very few series that I have read as they publish. Normally I enjoy stand alones. I was pleasantly surprised to see this short story collection. It was great to revisit the world and get stories with some of our favorite characters and to learn a little more past the last books.

I was a huge fan of the original trilogy. This is a fun collection of short stories. We learn more about old characters and are introduced to new characters. As with most short story collections, there are some stories that are stronger than others. This was an overall fun read and a must buy for fans of the series.

It’s no secret that Arc of a Scythe is one of my all-time favorite series. What’s not to love about stabbiness, dystopian societies, plotting and schemes, and slightly creepy sentient AIs? So when I saw the announcement that Gleanings was going to be a thing, a short story anthology that ventures back into that world, I immediately knew I wanted to read it. It was everything I’ve been waiting for and asking for, because let’s be honest, I definitely was not ready to leave the world by the end of the third book. And now, thanks to this anthology, I don’t have to!

Gleanings is the revisit to the Scythedom we’ve all wanted, written by a talented group of authors that put their own spin on things. It’s filled with heart, plot twists, surprises, and everything that made us fall in love with the series from the start.

I was definitely not disappointed with this anthology. Like every anthology, there are stories I enjoyed more than others. However, one thing I can say is that I didn’t not like any of the stories. I enjoyed each and every one, just to varying degrees. Each author brings their own twist and spin to the world, and several had me absolutely on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. Plus, none of them are straightforward, having some little twist or trick that the reader doesn’t see until they’re almost upon it.

An excellent addition to the Scythe world. By formatting this in short stories, we are able to follow more people and learn about different points in the transition from mortal to post-mortal society to give a rich, world-building experience.

Welcome to my stop on Turn the Page Tours' release celebration for Gleanings by Neal Shusterman! I am so excited to be sharing my review with you for this fantastic series addition!

I have felt a serious void in my reading since finishing the Arc of a Scythe series when the final book came out a few years ago, so I was overjoyed when I saw that there was going to be an anthology of short stories set within the same universe coming out this year! I loved the short story format of this book, which felt like a collection of add-on novellas following a barrage of characters new and old within the Scythedom. I felt that Gleanings was a wonderful way to expand upon the rich storytelling and worldbuilidng from the rest of the series. The stories added depth and context to some characters, and cemented the Scythedom as one of my all-time favorite examples of worldbuiling and storytelling. I am so glad that they opted to expand the series into this wonderful short story collection!

My Recommendation-
If you love fantastically written dystopian fiction, you need to grab copies of the whole Arc of a Scythe series as soon as possible! I love this series as a whole, and Gleanings was the perfect addition to finish things off.

It supplementary work, an anthology for anyone who can't get enough of the cult classic, dystopian Scythe world. For anyone not acquainted with the trilogy and being in-between, the work may not bring as much value as for anyone who finished it, still, amazing!

The Arc of a Scythe series is one of my favorites, so I was ecstatic when I heard Neal Shusterman was giving us more from the series! It was such a great way to revisit the Scythe world. The short stories ranged from backstories of specific Scythes as well as what happened after the Toll for some characters. It definitely wasn't a continuation, but rather a "fleshing out" of the story.

It is important to note that several authors contributed to this work, so it is not only Shusterman's voice. Overall, it is an essential addition to my library, and I have not been able to keep it on the shelves. I definitely had some favorites amongst the stories, which ranged from 3 stars to 4.5 stars. Because of my students' love of this series, I give it 4 stars.

It was very interesting to have different authors throughout this book. Loved seeing the origins of the scythes we know and love from the trilogy. It kept me glued to the pages until the end and just like with the end of the trilogy, I was so sad when it was over.
