Not bad, not great. Short essays about aging, i can see where some people would be offended by the stories. for me it was just okay.

A memoir that had me in fits of giggles and sympathizing. Middle age really sucks because you realise that you are getting old. But to do it with humour and grace is a life changer.

I was lucky to receive an advance copy of Excuse Me While I Disappear by Laurie Notaro from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinions. I found myself laughing at several situations throughout this book however I did not finish it as it drug out too long for me.

Sadly, this is not my type of humor. It felt mean-spirited, fat-shaming and shallow. Though I am definitely the target audience, it missed the mark for me.

I've never read a book by this author before, so this book was a GREAT book to start with for me, as I'm almost the same age as the author, so I can fully appreciate her hilarious yet sometimes tragic takes on mid-life, I laughed out loud MANY times, especially relating to the husband with unending questions who is also hard of hearing (yet he denies it!), dealing with a sluggish metabolism and becoming gray yet invisible. Her stories about her aging pup also hit home for me as I had a cherished fur baby who made it to age 15.5 years. I did wish the book were a bit longer and I also found myself wishing Laurie lived down the street from me--she would be an awesome friend to navigate this part of life with (and I would totally avoid her sidewalk--HA!). I'm looking forward to reading her other books now that I've read and truly enjoyed this one! I'm also going to make my husband read this book so he can get a glimpse from another older female's perspective (maybe he won't think I'm so zany?).

Laurie Notaro has always held a spot in my heart Her endlessly funny, heartfelt, embarrassing stories always bring me joy. Excuse Me While I Disappear delves into midlife, filled with the same amount of punch as her other essay-filled books. Just adored this one!

Laurie to the rescue...again. I've loved her writing for years! A fun, humorous look at the stage of life known as menopause. Cheekily written. Endearing.

I have really been missing out having not read this author. There is nothing more amazing than being able to laugh at yourself. In her case, she does one better; she shares her midlife struggles with whoever wants to read them. I am not-so-slowly approaching this time in my life and when I saw this book, I was captured by just the cover. I really enjoyed her perspectives and the anecdotes that she has experienced. She is just such a joy to read. I really lost it with the wine bag and have still not gotten it back. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley. I want more from this author.

This take on being a middle aged woman had me laughing out loud. Laurie Notaro’s perspective on growing older is spot on, and she tells it like it is, but in the funniest way.

More than once while reading this book, I called a friend or my sister to read sections aloud to them between fits of giggles. But it’s not all fun and games, as we know to be true of middle age. Notaro also tackles the harder side of growing older with the same direct approach. Sometimes the message is subtle, but it’s there. You have earned your age; wear it with pride.

I recently heard that when asked what they wished they had done differently in life, women most often answered that they wished they’d spent less time caring what other people thought of them. This is Notaro’s take as well. So amid the fits of laughter and gasps of recognition, there is an important lesson to be learned here!

This was cute, and I caught myself laughing out loud multiple times, but ultimately I think i read most of the essays 10 years too early. I know rue aging stories will resonate sooner than I’d like to admit.

That said, I would love to read more stories about Laurie’s return-to-office life and trolling social media — if this book were all about her antics as a middle-aged woman stirring up trouble in boring social situations, it would be an easy 5-star read.

This was hands down the funniest book I have ever read. I think this should be mandatory reading for anyone close to 50. As someone who is edging closer to 50, I could relate to so much in this book. Laurie Notaro has a brand of wit and comedy that may not be for everyone, but it was for me. If you need a good laugh, pick up this book and read any chapter and you WILL laugh. Well don't read the last chapter. That one is sad, but totally relatable if you've ever had child with paws.

First up, thanks for allowing me to read this one. Or try to read it. The first story was about hair, hair and hair, and did I mention hair? It got dull. The second one she apparently thinks she is invisible because people go about their day and decides that maybe you are entitled to a rotisserie chicken once in a while then (and not paying for it). I am sorry, am I supposed to laugh? I couldn't. Man, if I found I had taken something by accident? I would just go back and pay for it. I tried the third essay.. but it just wasn't working. So while I totally thought this would be for me, it just wasn't. Sadly. :(

Laurie Notaro is one of the most authentic memoirists out there. Her straightforward storytelling coupled with her ability to find humor in every situation make for a light-hearted, easy read. This book focused much on aging, including chapters about embracing her gray, a manual for an older body, and a menopause party, among others. My favorite was the chapter titled "Me and My Step-Husbands: where she tells about the handymen she has hired to do odd jobs around the house and pick up her Facebook Marketplace purchases across the state. One handyman turned into two turned into three, and she's having to keep their contact info to themselves lest her boss tries to steal one of them from her. It was truly an enjoyable book.

Thank you #Netgalley for this copy!

Always love the quick reads of Laurie Notaro. I could not put this one down and consistently had a smile on my face laughing at her comments. Her brutally honest recollection of health issues, hair cuts, mom drama and so much more will keep you turning the pages. It as as though you are sitting outback with a glass of wine with an old friend who keeps you laughing. This time she shares about growing older, her younger husband, her working experiences and so much more. Highly recommend if you are looking for a fun, light hearted read!

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. Whilst this author has been on my radar for a long time, I have never gotten around to reading any of her books until this one and now I need to deep dive her back list! As a woman in her early 50's myself this book was maybe a little too hysterically relatable for me. As someone who has recently been cursing the deterioration of myself, this book cams along at just the right time to inject some humour back into all that we are going through during this life phase. I found myself nodding along and laughing, happy in the knowledge that we are not going through tis alone and that our incidents are indeed not isolated and need not be taken so seriously as I have been as they are all part of the process. From her chapter on false menopausal transition and the need for copious body powder, to the unexpected dusk quacks that may blast out of us at the most inopportune times, to the amount of peeing and lets be honest wetting ourselves we have now started to do...I was here for it all and literally highlighting parts as I went to then read out to my similar aged friends. A highly entertaining, engaging and fun read. #laurienotaro #ExcusemewhileIdisappear:talesofmidlifemayhem #netgalley #goodreads #litsy #storygraph #tea_sipping_bookworm #amazonaustralia #memoir #bookqueen #bookstagram

I needed a laugh-out-loud book and this one fit the bill. A series of essays from Notaro about aging in a world where you don't feel seen if you are older (hence, the title). I totally related to this book and had several snort worthy moments. I really enjoyed it!

Excuse Me While I Disappear is a book set as a woman is experiencing the perimenopause. It's laugh out loud funny throughout and a much needed account of a time that not many people talk about. The narrative is a bit all over the place at times, its not quite an advice book and not quite a memoir but I really enjoyed it.

Triggers: fat shaming, ODing jokes
Love the cover art. I'm 28 and I know not the targeted audience but this was...I don't know I felt offended by her callus jokes. I'm debating if people actually find this funny... I know aging is hard and I wish there were 'talks' to get you through it. There were generally funny lines.. it's her spin on situations she made jokes of that aren't worth telling.. Over dosing is not a punchline in your bad joke and telling someone that on her wedding day het bridesmaids arm fat would ruin the pictures is not okay.. I haven't read her books before but honestly I'm glad because if this is her since of humor I'm better without it..
