This author is new to me, but I've been reading historical romance books for quite some time now. The tropes were nothing new, but I quite enjoyed her writing style and the characters. She's set this up as a series too, which I highly enjoy in this genre. I look forward to reading the other books in this series and more from her!

The narrator was did an okay job. I sped it up to 1.25x and it still sounded like a normal pace. It sounded so slow in real time.

Audiobook specific review:

The narrator was good and I was able to listen to this at 2.0x speed which is always a plus for me. (So many books, so little time, right?) I definitely recommend grabbing this from the library or from Kobo when it’s released if you’re an audiobook fan!

I do feel like a more mature sounding narrator would’ve fit the main characters better, but again, the narrator did a good job either way.

Book review:

This was so so so much fun!! It just made me so happy! I knew pretty instantly that the writing style was absolutely up my alley, yet I kept getting surprised by the next line that spoke to my soul. She is an undercover romance author and he's a misunderstood duke so really, I was born to read this book.

Artemis was such a goddess I love her to pieces!! That scene when she flaunted her engagement ring to the maid out of pettiness was MARVELOUS. We deserve petty queens! So many times heroines try to take the high road but she took the fun road and I love that journey for us 💅 I loved her relationship with both Dominic and Celeste. There were so many sweet and endearing moments between them, as well as flaming chemistry with her duke.

Dominic was such a fun character for me to read about. I am not normally used to heroes who have 15 year old daughters or who are pretty willing to sleep with the heroines right away. He was DTF and made it very evident. He was also just so hot and cute and sweet and misunderstood. I was rooting for him at all times!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶🌶.25/5

I really enjoyed this story. I love a historical romance with strong, independent women who are intent on living their lives as they please. Especially when books pay a big role. I like that their wasn’t much angst due to a “misunderstanding”, this was a smooth story with just the right amount of tension. I can’t wait for the next book!

I enjoyed Sasha Higgin’s voice, but I don’t think she was a good fit for this book. Her portrayal of Artemis made her seem/sounds much younger and more naive than the story suggests. It was also a bit confusing at chapter changes with a POV change as her voice did not change between characters.

Amy Rose Bennett's light-hearted account of the 1858 London social scene through the eyes of her character, Artemis Jones is all a reader could ask for in a historical fiction romance! Artemis, a former school teacher (and secret author) intends to suffer through another never-ending London season for a variety of reasons. She wishes to help her sister and friend alike with their seasons and is also in the market for a benefactor for her women's college idea.

Though not intending on being a true part of the season, she finds herself enthralled by a certain devilishly handsome duke. Like all good romance novels, the story follows the pair through the navigation of their feelings and the society around them in a lightly humorous and charming way. Bennett doesn't miss with this novel and has been able to take the popular trope of a wedding for convenience and make it into something so much more. She gives her female characters a rare depth that historical novels occasionally lack while also having her male characters be just as interesting.

Artemis is the accumulation of so many wonderful decisions on Bennett's part and her character is both relatable and intelligent. Filling the pages with her thoughts that reference her own novels just as much as the classics, she provides an engaging narrative that diverges from the regular narratives that we so often see in romance writing. She is a woman who understands her own feelings of attraction (even if she finds them to be terribly agitating at the same time) and builds such a special relationship with the Duke's daughter.

I'm hesitant to give this book more stars, largely because I thought that the romance could have been slightly better developed to allow the readers to really feel for, and root for, the two main characters. I saw the potential at the beginning of their relationship but then felt like it slightly died as they were together. I would have appreciated consistency throughout the book's entirety.

Though the side plots within this book could be seen as unimportant, I found that they added a slight insight into the next books in this series and will hopefully allow the readers to be just as excited as I am for the subsequent books!

In a great synopsis, this book should be a candidate for your next read (or listen) if you enjoy any of the following:
-Witty banter
-Intelligent and interesting characters
-A good revenge plot
-Bridgerton-esque "seasons"
-Fake relationship
-Light steamy time

This one was my first read by this author and for me it was just ok. I didn't see much of a romance build by Dominic and Artemis. I think the shot scene did pick up the mood/pace a bit. I guess I was hoping for more scenes with the daughter? I just feel indifferent with this story.

I love this cover though.

Narrator Sasha Higgins did an ok job, although her voice seemed too young for the heroine.
