I simply adored this book!
Clover is the ultimate badass protagonist that you cannot help but love and want to protect with your life. Teddy is just full blown heart eyes emoji. And even the side characters make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside - Day, Alan, Lady Sylvia and even Lisa!

I get very strong Jasmine Guillory vibes from reading this book, which is probably why I loved it so much.

I was routing for Clover the whole book through, and I loved her growth throughout the book. She could’ve so easily been written as an ice queen, but I felt she was perfectly written as a woman who has been through a lot and is trying to process overcome it whilst still protecting her heart.

Essentially, I couldn’t fault this book and I know it’s one I’ll come back to time again.

Thank you so much NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC

“You go low, I burrow a hole into the center of the earth, or whatever it was Michelle said.”

Figure of Speech is a romance novel set in the White House.

Clover Bennett is a PR guru who is hired as the Press Secretary to a new President only a few months into the job. DC is a small town and she worked comms for the POTUS, Teddy, when he was a senator. The stakes are higher now and Teddy is absolutely irresistible.

Suffice to say, I loved this book. It was fun to visit DC again on the pages and imagine this story playing out in my former hometown. That said, it was light on random callouts to DC hotspots. It was more the essence of DC political culture that it captured.

“For a communications professional I sucked when it came to communicating my own emotions.”

I not only agree with the above, I would take it even further. It’s always different when you are the one speaking and you don’t have a handler to prep you. And you feel worse because this is what you do.

“This room was like a scene from Animal Kingdom. It was important I establish dominance quickly so others knew I was not one to be trifled with. It was all about bold ideas and speaking in a way that made it sound like you knew what you were doing even when you didn’t. Never let them see you sweat because the minute you do, it’s over and whatever is left of you is getting picked on by the vultures.”

This book is hilarious. There were so many quips and obviously 67% of my book quotes are one-liners. The main character was very relatable, at least for a former DC workaholic. It was hard to read the parts about her not trusting men but honestly cannot blame her.

I love when a book surprises me, and this was definitely one of those books! The story was serving some Olivia Pope/Scandal realness (minus all the murder and torture) and delivered one hell of a forbidden romance!

I’m obsessed with Clover. She’s a badass boss bitch who works hard and is insanely good at what she does. Props to this book for giving us a WOMAN married to her work-it’s a thing! I loved watching Clover kicking ass and taking names all while being wrapped up in a crazy love story. Teddy is adorable and (from what my limited political knowledge can gather) a pretty good president! At first I was a little confused about their relationship and how it seemed like they went from 0-60 real quick, but it made sense to discover that sweet sweet Teddy had been pining all these years 🥺. I love a good relationship that’s dripping in support, and Teddy and Clover had that in droves. It was so sweet to see Teddy awake these feelings and realizations in Clover that she didn’t know she had, and my heart melted as he reminded her of her now dormant dreams, and encouraged her to chase them-I loved these two!

Also, I’d be remiss not to mention the hilarity and awesomeness that was Clover’s friends. Alan and Daysha had me IN STITCHES so many times. Just the best of minor characters!

In general, this book was smart, and funny, and sexy as hell. I binged it because I couldn’t stop. I really, really enjoyed this!

I was given an ARC by NetGalley and Webster Avenue Publishing. All opinions are my own.

Clover swears off men after a series of toxic relationships. After years of hard work, she finally become the press secretary at the White House. She falls the president of course but she wants to keeps things professional....

I really like this book. First, it's a great to see a hard-working FEMALE professional getting her professional rewards. I like smart, sassy and professional woman characters a lot. :) It is also wonderful that she just happens to be POC.

The story is also fun AND romantic. The conflict in the story is actually interesting. I like how the professional angle is dealt with... Both main characters are great.

Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
