This book is the perfect escape for anyone who has ever dealt with misogyny, man-spaining, workplace sexism, or being told that your looks affect someone else’s opinion of who you truly are.

Especially funny if you’ve ever wanted to get revenge on your boss!

If you have ever worked customer service you really need to read You Should Smile More because you will want to be Vanessa and get a little revenge on your bosses or supervisors.

Telemarketer Vanessa Blair knew that there wasn’t many jobs out there with a degree in Latin but she did the best she could without making waves while she fostered five kittens for the animal shelter. But thing came to a head when she was fired without warning because her boss didn’t like the way her face looked. Vanessa had a pity party with some alcohol with her friends from work leading to some very different ways to get revenge on her old boss with the help of her friends and family.

If you have ever worked customer service you really need to read You Should Smile More because you will want to be Vanessa and get a little revenge on your bosses or supervisors.

You Should Smile More by Anastasia Ryan is heavier on the chick-lit than the romance but it would make a funny movie with everything that happens!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Vanessa is one day unexpectedly fired because of her face. Yes, you read that correctly, her face!! Due to the unjust termination, Vanessa and her coworkers vow to find out why she was wrongfully let go. the premise of the book was intriguing however the middle was a bit slow for me. I loved the LOL moments though. Fun book for sure .

I think there are so many people who will relate to You Should Smile More. Vanessa is working for a telemarketing company when she is unexpectedly fired… for her face. What follows is her journey of self-doubt, finding her way, and standing up for injustices. Oh, and some adorable kittens!

I appreciated how (unfortunately) relatable the storyline was. I’ve been told I need to change my face or personality in a work setting before too, and like Vanessa, it can absolutely make you second guess yourself. Hence, this book was really down-to-earth and realistic.

I also appreciated that the book brought some levity to the situation. While the compliance professional side of me was cringing, some of the things that were said and done were just amusing. Once you meet Vanessa’s mom and friends, you’ll understand.

I also love that the book brought visibility to fostering cats, and supporting non-profits. It was such a feel-good aspect, and the kittens are adorable!

Overall, a fast down-to-earth read that many will relate to.

Thanks to @netgalley and @sourcebookscasa for the opportunity to read this book. The review expresses my own personal opinions.

This was such a fun and silly book. I really enjoyed it. I loved Vanessa, Jane and Trisha’s friendship and their willingness to go above and beyond for each other. I thought the whole sabotage plans were so ridiculous and funny. Xavier was an absolutely infuriating boss and I did not blame the girls one bit for all the stunts they pulled on him. Vanessa’s mom was a little much for me at times, but I did find her and the rest of the Bridge Brigade to be charming overall. I didn’t really feel the connection between Carter and Vanessa, but I loved Carter as a character, especially his love for cats. And THE CATS. Oh my goodness, they were adorably mischievous. I had a really great time reading this book. I highly recommend if you’re looking for something fun and unique with cute kittens, glitter bombs, wild turkeys and great friendships.

You Should Smile More is a phrase used a lot nowadays towards women so when I saw the title I had to read it. Gladly I can say that the book is not depressing at all but actually very inspiring and funny!

The story itself is not something I've stumbled across before. We get a friend group, a little bit of spying action (bugging the office was very hilarious!), and many happy endings.

Vanessa is a well-written character, she's not perfect but she is likable and her volunteer work as a foster "mom" for kittens adds a lot to it. There's also Jane that gets fired at the same time as Vanessa, and Trisha that gets to stay in the company but is being watched very closely by Xavier and Bobbert (such a funny nickname).
The girls get an interesting idea while drinking after being fired and they actually go through with it! We get to experience some spy action from the girls and Vanessa's mom friend group while they decide to uncover the "dark" secrets of the telemarketing company.

I enjoyed reading this one quite a lot, it was missing something (can't really say what) therefore I leave only 4 stars.

If you enjoy cute calico kittens and an over the top revenge plot then, You Should Smile More is for you. Vanessa has been fired from her job as a telemarketer. She didn't like her job, but the reason she was let go was not poor performance. It was because the boss didn't like her face and felt she had a dark soul. While commiserating with her two friends, they came up with a plan for revenge. The story is filled with laugh out loud moments and a boss/villain that is easy to dislike. More importantly, he gets what is coming to him. The romance plot takes a back seat in the story but is perfectly blended throughout in a satisfying way.

Thank you NetGalley, and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the arc!

When Vanessa is fired because her boss doesn’t like her “face” that shows a “dark soul”, she’s devastated. Until her and a few work friends recall how awful the boss is and come up with a revenge plot.

This is not my usual genre of reads but I gave it a shot and I was glad I did. I laughed out loud many times! While it was a little over the top and exaggerated, that was part of its charm. The characters were all hilarious; either in a good way or a bad way. The pages and laughs just flew by.

“This is war. War always has casualties, but I have it under control.”

You Should Smile More comes out 1/17.

You Should Smile More by Anastasia Ryan
Women’s Fiction
Publication Date: January 17, 2023

I can’t count how many times I’ve been told “you should smile more”... as if in the history of that comment it has ever produced a genuine smile as a result. Or even better “you’d be so much prettier if you smiled more.” Luckily, I’ve never had a boss say that or fire me for the lack of it. Yet that’s what happens to Vanessa. She’s fired for her face. She’s spent the last few years sacrificing everything for her job only to be let go for her face. The story is Vanessa’s journey of coming back from that rather traumatizing experience and a rather comedic and ridiculous portrayal of revenge that gives off a kind of Horrible Bosses the movie vibe.

How anyone lasted a day at this literal hellhole is a mystery let alone years. However, the shenanigans were over-the-top but not so far over-the-top they were completely unimaginable. The plot Vanessa and her friends come up with is hilarious and leads to some pretty head shaking yet entertaining events.

Don’t fret, if you thought the cover gave off rom-com vibes there is a teeny tiny romance subplot, so that if you are anything like me, will satisfy your craving. Overall, this book left me smiling.

This book was hilariously weird.
Quick read, sympathetically quirky characters, and an absolutely bananas workplace made this a blast to read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for an EARC. I read an excerpt on the publishers' page and was enchanted. I didn't really know what to expect, but this a rom com romance with a workplace mystery and kittens. Vanessa gets fired "because of her face" by her strange boss at a telemarketing company and the plot unfolds from there. Suffice to say there are laughs and tears, meet cute, spying and also a terrible boss. It all comes together at the end. I enjoyed this way more than I expected, and I highly recommend it.

Anyone who has been plauged with RBF should read this book! This story was hilarious and also sweet with a side of revenge. This cast of characters had me belly laughing at every turn. The concept of the book is what drew me in, but this was executed so well! Who doesn't love a little bit of corporate espionage in their books?
Thank you to Sourcebooks, Anastasia Ryan and Netgalley for an early copy.

This book was hilarious!

Cute kittens, a workplace from h*ll, a boss so outrageous that he’s probably modeled on a real person and a group of investigating Moms makes for a really laugh out loud funny story. Quick read, perfect for a rainy day with a cappuccino.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

Vanessa is fired from her telemarketing job at a company called Directis. However, it was not her performance that got her fired, it was her face, or rather the faces she makes around the office. The faces that she makes were against their ethics policy that they call “tweam”. Vanessa’s friend and coworker Jane was also fired, and their other friend Trisha was put on probation, just because they are friends.

The girls come up with a revenge plan one drunken night and you watch that plan expand throughout the book. I love the support team that Vanessa had behind her. The way they all stood up for one another and took a stand against the company that was committing fraud was terrific to see.

I love that Vanessa fosters animals and helps out at the local animal shelter during her free time. She seemed to be truly happy helping them.

I loved seeing Vanessa's life go on a better path. It shows that everything really does happen for a reason. She never wanted to be a telemarketer but now she works at her dream job and has wonderful friends, family, and a new boyfriend.

There are some good laughs throughout the story and you will feel like one of Vanessa's friends who just want the best for her and to see her succeed.

First, NOT a romance as billed. However, it is an empowering story about refusing to accept the abuses existing in corporate culture. While I feel the antics of the narcissistic boss and those of the team of disgruntled employees were WAY overblown and completely over-the-top, it made for an entertaining and light-hearted read.
