This book presented some heavy topics in such an easy to relate way. Rory is going into middle school and incredibly embarrassed by his speech impediment that he has never been able to overcome. To make matters worse, it's his "r"s that he still can't pronounce so even introducing himself - Wowy - starts the first day of school off on the wrong track.

Rory has also just lost his best friend Brent over the summer due to a fight that the reader finds out about towards the end of the book. Rory doesn't know how to navigate school and life in this new world where Brent has become his bully. Things are especially complicated when Brent has an extreme head injury that leaves him with brain damage and thrusts him to the outside of the middle school social circles.

This book is about redemption, self-empowerment, individualism, and kindness. There are so many difficult topics addressed that this book will definitely find readers who can connect. This book reminded me of Wonder and could connect with readers who are struggling with academic difficulties, challenges with friends, or general confidence issues. It was a great read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This is a fantastic book for middle grade students. I listened to the audiobook and the narration held my attention throughout. The main character of the book, Rory, has a speech impediment and can't say his r's correctly. This is especially trying for him since his name has so many r sounds. Unfortunately, Rory is picked on by bullies and the author does a really nice job of showing why the bullies act the way they do. I loved how the author also used classic rock to add some fun to the story as well.
Rory plays a guitar and his speech teacher uses his love of music to help him. In the story, another student has a bike accident and has a brain injury. The author used the obstacles that Muhammad Ali faced to help Rory make connects and overcome his obstacles.
I would highly recommend this book for any middle grade student. There are so many themes that can be covered in discussion of this book: speech issues, friendships, bullying, and overcoming obstacles.

Excellent book that deals with the struggle of speech impediments in upper elementary/middle school. Rory can't say his r's - a big problem when he has to say his name. He is mocked and bullied by other kids, but it especially hurts when his former best friend Brent is cruel to him. Rory does have a close circle of supportive friends, though, including Jenna, who he secretly has a crush on. He starts making some improvements with his new speech therapist also, who he connects with through humor and rock music.
When Brent suffers a traumatic brain injury in a serious bike accident, he starts attending speech therapy with Rory, and the boys are paired up for a biography project as well. They choose Muhammad Ali for the subject of their project, which also involves a presentation in front of their whole grade.
While this book is about speech issues, it is also so much more. Relationships are at the heart - at home with his parents, at school with his friends and teachers. and his friendships outside of school as well. They are dealt with very realistically and relatably.
The narration by Matthew Bridges was excellent. He gives Rory's first-person narrative realistic emotions and sarcasm, but also creates distinct voices for the other characters.

Very impressive narration; loved the different voices! I felt like the female voices were especially well done (e.g. not squeaky or overly high-pitched). Nice clear transitions.

I’m browsing for new book to put on my reading list when I found this audiobook. At first i assuming this book about a kid who have different opinion towards something turns out that its totally wrong. It more than that.

Rory having difficulty to pronounce the “R” that makes him sound as a baby. While becoming one of the victim for the bullies, Rory also have his own conflict with his bff (breant) that lead him as guilty when breant involved with car accident lead him to something more worse after that.

What i like in this book :

❤️The relationship between Rory with his speech therapy touches my heart. How he help Rory dealing with his nightmare not to mention his addiction of Muhammad Ali.
❤️The tricks that we can refer and what to do when facing difficulty to speak.
❤️Surrounded by a supportive support system really could help you dealing with trouble that you facing. Sometimes what you need to do is share your feelings with them..you will feel the burdens disappear.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC
