This is more than a cookbook and readers who just want recipes may not enjoy the stories and backgrounds. I do however and found the ranch life interesting. I loved the stories of family events and food served. The recipes look wonderful. They are not super easy or fast and do require ingredients that might not be easy to find. I'm sure they taste wonderful though. Sometimes the extra time is well spent! I look forward to trying some of these recipes and creating my own memories. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

In Five Marys we learn that the Five Marys are her four daughters each named Marysomething and herself. Included in the book are beautiful photos of the ranch in all four seasons. The book is divided into the four seasons. Each includes hardy recipes with seasonal ingredients. She includes some ingredients that I am not as familiar with such as leaf lard. There are fun crafts included.

"Family Style: Recipes and traditions from the ranch" is the perfect way to describe this book. Split into sections based on the four seasons, recipes are then grouped into themed family-style meals (some are for holidays). Some of the meals serve 6, but others are for 12. There are lots of ranch stories and photos, along with photos of the food. Most of the meal groupings also have some type of DIY - a craft or skill to learn. I liked those DIYs. Some of the meals had a drink and most had dessert.
This is a good book for those looking for complete meals for large families or groups, or those who are interested in ranching. Because the family raises animals for meat, the meals are all featuring meat mains, beef and pork. There are a variety of sides. Readers who prefer cookbooks organized by the type of dish would probably struggle a bit with this book, and I don't know that vegetarians would get much value.

‘Ranch-size kitchen-sink cookies’, ‘Maisie’s guacamole’, ‘Beeswax wraps’ and ‘Mobile herb garden’ are some of the delightful recipes and craft ideas in this recipe and useful ideas book.
I know my whole family would love the kitchen-sink cookies and I plan to make them soon, but what I really liked about Five Mary’s Family Style is the addition of the crafts and tips like ‘How to tether a horse (or dog)’!
This is a lovely book to browse as well as cook/make from as it is full of beautiful photography of the ranch as well as the recipes and crafts.

First of all, thank you so much to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

And now on to the review:

I LOVED this book!

I personally would buy this cookbook just to page through and look at the beautiful photographs, even if there weren't the recipes involved. However, luckily the recipes were there and they were great!

First of all, I loved that the recipes were broken down into seasons and then broken down again into different event and holiday meals. I found so many recipes that I would make for my family or guests that it wasn't even funny.

This cookbook would make a great gift or just to buy for yourself to add to a collection.

I highly recommend this book!

Mary Heffernan's new cookbook is a beautiful collection of recipes that all look very good and would feed a family pretty easily. The illustrations and narrative in the book are also very pretty, neat and help the reader gain a better sense of understanding the American heartland and ranch lifestyle. I will definitely be making recipes from this book!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of “Five Mary’s Family Style” by Mary Heffernan. This is an absolutely GORGEOUS cookbook featuring recipes from the author’s working ranch. I liked intro and background about the author’s family at the beginning, followed by a number of seriously mouthwatering recipes. The book is organized by seasons and the photography is breathtaking. I can’t wait to work my way through all the different meals!

3.5 stars rounded up. This cookbook focuses on a menu for different events instead of just a collection of recipes. The author uses a lot of whole foods and many different diy than you usuly see in a cookbook. There are also fun ideas for crafts alongside the recipes.
There are many more ideas throughout the book than what us listed under the menu and there are many beautiful pictures throughout to engage the reader.
I do wish things were organized differently and that the recipes were easier to follow. But a great cookbook for those who love to cook.

I love to see what people eat in specific communities so this book was perfect for me! The photographs were wonderfull and are essential for the kind of cookbook connoisseur that I am. I only wish that every single dish had a photograph to go along with it.

I also really enjoyed how it was broken up into seasons. That was a wonderful touch.

Five Marys Family Style is either a memoir style cookbook or a cookbook a la memoir, but it doesn’t matter. It’s a fabulous peek into the life of Mary Heffernan, her husband Brian and 4 other family-Marys. In fact I have not been so engaged with Marys since I spent 4th grade at St. Elezbeth’s and had 5 Marys in my class. . I love the author’s chatty style of writing. Reading this book is like getting a glimpse into life on the ranch and hanging with your friend, exchanging recipes.

The book has comfort food, healthy salads, cocktails and many DIY projects. Each recipe or project comes with a story that gives the readers a taste of ranch life. I’m so happy that the author included lots of photographs both of the ranch, the family and the food. For me the photos are as important as the ingredient list and directions in a cookbook. I get lost in cookbooks that leave me wondering if what I’ve produced is what the author intended. There’s 17 themes that all come with a wide range of recipes. From healthy to belly busting.

The Little House Dinner section has a One-Pan Spicy Meatball Bake. Snow Day Dinner includes a warming Meyer Lemon Tot Toddy. Make Ahead Dinner for Six has a DIY project: Make your own Beeswax Wraps (I’ve been purchasing mine on line). I think my favorite is the Easter Sunday Supper recipe for Artichokes with Preserved-Lemon Aioli. You get the idea. There’s a little something for everyone. This is just a tiny taste of all the love and goodness that Mary Heffernan has shared in this wonderful cookbook. Believe me, this is one you’re going to want to add to your shelf.

Thank you for the EArc NetGalley and Sasquatch Books. If you don’t know who Mary Heffernan and family are, what are you waiting for?!?! I’ve been in love with this family ever since I found them on social media and bought the first cookbook. The food in this newest book is mouth watering. The book (or book set) would be the perfect host gift for anyone who loves some good, wholesome food & drink. The photos are stunning but it’s the family that makes the whole thing. You can tell this hard working ranching family is raising their girls to be kind, caring, hard working upstanding citizens and who doesn’t love that? I support all things Five Mary’s Farms and you will want to also!

Beautiful book. Thanks to Netgally for providing me with a copy of Five Marys Family Style. I love the personal stories sprinkled thorough the book. My only criticism is that the recipes launch into the making of the recipe but does not list the ingredients prior to the instructions. I have a feeling this will be rectified prior to publication., which will elevate it even more than a 10/10. Beautiful photos, family, a way of life. A hopeful book. Even if you never make any of the recipes it's an optimistic book that would make any book shelf swoon.
