This is a lovely story that aims to encourage more young girls to pursue futures in STEM. As a girl who really enjoyed STEM subjects as a child but was often told they were too “boyish”, this book really resonates with me and I will be sure to be teaching this messages to my pupils at school.

This story is a beautiful narrative that would be empowering for young girls interested in pursuing a career in STEM. This book would add representation and value to any classroom library, and I hope to get a physical copy for mine.

Girls use the principles and forces of physics every day, but no one tells them the name of these things or how they can be named in ways they've not heard before. This is the basics of STEM integrated with rhyming text. Excellent!
The illustrations by Skylar White are delightful, imaginative, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from SOURCEBOOKS Kids/Sourcebooks Explore via NetGalley. Thank you!

This is the perfect motivational book for girls today. There are no limits. I enjoyed sharing I Am a Force by Maria Marianayagam with my daughter.

I really liked this book! I was such a fun and engaging way to teach children about the forces in physics. The definitions at the back were detailed and the poems and illustrations helped to make each of the concepts more vivid. I highly recommend this book!

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC!

I am not sure I get the point of this book. While reading it seemed like a poem on women’s empowerment. But at the end it gets heavy into STEAM, particularly physics and forces at play. I love physics, but I am sorry to say I didn’t love this book. It does not know what it wants to be. Is it a lesson in physics, or is it female empowerment? Some might try to say both, but it does not do well either way.

Excellently written, my 4yo enjoyed it very much. Our favorite part was at the end, some of the more challenging words for her were defined and explained. She was excited to have that broken out as she enjoys new words. It was also nice to see a diverse breakdown of characters in the illustration.

I Am A Force is a great picture book, especially for girls. It empowers them while simultaneously teaching them about scientific concepts. Great with children who want to learn new words and learn about the world and how things work.

I Am a Force combines STEM and empowerment in the best way. Every page was filled with fun and interesting illustrations of girls engaging with the science around them, which really brought the words to life. I enjoyed reading this, and I could see myself buying this for the children in my life. One critique might be that I wish there were a little more wordplay/rhyming. Sometimes I felt as if the writing in a certain spot could've been more fun.

A beautifully written book that not only empowers young girls but educates and inspires. I don’t know of any other book that champions girls, educates both personally and scientifically AND connects it to the world of STEM which really needs more girls to be a part of it.

My daughter was enraptured. It was okay that some terms were unknown and required me to further explain - her curiosity had been piqued.

Beautifully illustrations too. Definitely a book I will also be physically purchasing.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

I'm very keen on anything that encourages STEM learning in girls - my daughter is fascinated by science and her favourite show is Emily's Wonder Lab, so we were both excited for this.

She absolutely loved it - she's only 5 so we used the descriptions at the end of the book to go into more detail over how each force worked, and then discussed the pictures and how they related to each other. Definitely something we will reread a lot in the future!

What is not to like about this book? I love the integration of STEM concepts and girl powers. The illustrations were fantastic. My kindergartner loved it!

Aeons ago, I was asked if I wanted to be in an advanced science class when I started junior high. I refused. I’ve regretted this ever since.
This book I Am a Force will prevent other girls from making the same mistake. Pictures of diverse girls plus wonderful creative verse combine to make a great book.
The end of the book give a glossary of what different science categories mean. “What does it mean when it says I am a force of ……”
The subtitle of the book says it all: every girl is a force to be reckoned with.
Buy this book for the favorite girls in your life or for your school library.

This is an unusual children’s book (and a powerful one). It’s not your usual children’s book about a bunny and a squirrel. It would be a great book to read aloud (with sound effects) to any child, but it is directed at girls. The message is that girls, not just boys, are powerful in many different ways.
But perhaps the most amazing and useful part of the book is the afterword to parents and then to teachers. It is a guide to how they can raise empowered girls who want to do many things, most especially science, technology, engineering and math.
I recommend this book highly. I hope this author will continue to write “force”-ful books for girls and for all children. It makes me very hopeful.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Kids for the opportunity to read an ARC of this fabulous book in exchange for writing my opinions in a review.

When I taught second grade, we taught a unit on force and motion. We also taught a lot about character strengths. I love how this empowering story takes those forces and motion concepts and adds them to the lists of positive attributes children can find and name in themselves and their friends. It takes the negative connotations sometimes associated with strong girls and turns them on their head with such positivity. Well done !

What an empowering, amazing book to encourage girls to join STEM.

Wonderful representation of races and abilities.

Should be read to all kids and by all parents and schools.

A very cute board book to inspire a love of science for young girls! A perfect baby girl gift! It also includes longer descriptions of forces in the back that kids can come back to as they get older.

I Am a Force is a fantastic book for teaching STEM concepts! I love that it encourages girls to go into STEM fields and sheds light on the gender gap in STEM fields. This book will be an auto buy for me and my girls. It is perfect in its simplicity and clarity regarding different forces of physics. The rhyming is adorable too! I cannot wait for it to come out! Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy!

I love this book! It melds together STEM and women in science, with women's rights in general and the strength of women and girls. Using a literal force from science vocabulary, such as high friction, buoyancy and magnetism, the author both explains the scientific force and how it can be used in a figurative way as well. The illustrations feature a diverse group of girls and women who look strong and powerful and are leading the way or making change in different situations. There are a wide range of careers or passions included in this book from music, to chemistry to gymnastic, proving that not only does science appear in all types of situations, but that girls can be anything they want to be.The text is very simple and would be fairly easy to decode outside of the scientific vocabulary. The definitions and short descriptions are straight to the point and easy to understand. I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers, especially of young girls, in the age 5-11 range. It sends positive messages, ties in scientific vocabulary and literary language techniques and is an all-around really well written book. I will definitely have to get a copy for my classroom library! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a sneak peak at an electronic copy of this book!
