A twisty, suspenseful read that painted the most amazing pictures of the stunning, remote setting. I truly felt like I was in the scenes with the characters. Loved it!!

This is a highly addictive thriller that kept me entertained. The short chapters made this a fast read. The storyline flowed so well.

I've been slowly getting back into thrillers post-pandemic and The Couple at Causeway Cottage did not disappoint.

I really devoured this book.

Kat and Mark previously lived in London but decided to move onto an Island off the Northern Irish coast to be closer to Mark's ageing mother.

Kat is harbouring a secret though about a teenage years and is worried her past has come back to haunt her.

The couple are hoping the move will be a fresh start and are trying for a baby,

But do they really trust each other?

Their marriage faces some testing waters on the island - will they manage to weather the storm that's brewing?

Diane Jeffrey really makes the reader feel as though they are also in the island with her immersive descriptive writing.

There are some wonderful descriptions of the birds and wildlife as well as the landscape and a sense of the island‘s history and its legends.

The characterisation is good, some fool you and some are distinctly unlikable.

There's some serious themes dealt with: adultery, sexual assault, rape, termination of pregnancy and murder.

The tensions builds as the secrets become uncovered.

Kat can no longer run away from her past and she now has to think about another person's life than just her own.

With thanks to NetGalley and HQ for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A gripping read - lots of tension and keeps you wanting to read more. I read it in two short settings as I raced through it. Good characters and plot.

Kat and Mark move from London to Rathlin Island where they hope to have a more peaceful life and hopefully raise a family but they hadn’t counted on one of the other residents. Rathlin sounds delightful and I loved the descriptions of the scenery. What made it even more interesting was that years ago I had a penpal who lived there. Kat was one of those “I will do it, maybe I won’t” characters and as it happened so often it became tiresome. The other main characters also had some horrible traits and weren’t appealing, not to mention secrets! I liked the story even though some of it wasn’t entirely realistic but it was lovely to see other locations apart from the ones usually used. Easy to get into, easy to read and gripping in parts.

Kat and Mark have moved from London, to an island off the Northern Irish Coast, a house called Causeway Cottage. Mark wanted to be closer to his elderly mother and it would be an excellent place to bring up their children which they plan to have.

Before long cracks start to appear in their relationship. Mark is still messaging his ex wife and Kat is lying about a new friendship. And one of them is hiding a big secret about the past.

A must read addictive book that had plenty of jaw dropping moments.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoy domestic thrillers and add in an island in Ireland and I'm so there! From the very beginning the books pulled me in.

Kat and Mark move to this small island near Ballycastle in Ireland to be closer to Mark's ailing mother. It is apparent that Mark is keeping secrets from Kat, and Kat is keeping secrets from Mark. About 1/3 of the way through the book I felt like I kind of figured out what the ending would probably be. However, there were a few secrets that I didn't see coming. I'm never sure if I'm just good at figuring out the secrets in thrillers, or if others might find them a bit obvious as well. Despite this I still really enjoyed this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Leaving their life in London, Kat and Mark started anew on Rathlin Island, off the Northern Irish coast. In contrast to the hustle and bustle of the big city, Rathlin is creepy, isolated, and remote. Kat admits the island is breathtakingly beautiful, but something about Rathlin and their new home makes her feel uneasy and on edge.

Kat is determined to keep her imagination in check. For a fresh start and to finally have the child she's always wanted, she's moved to Rathlin with Mark. Instead of living the dream, Kat and Mark's new life became an epic nightmare.

Kat has not been completely honest with Mark about her connection to the area and a new friendship with a neighbor. Scratch beneath the surface of the Couple at Causeway Cottage's perfect facade and discover a twisted web of lies and deception that's impossible to untangle.

The Couple at Causeway Cottage is Diane Jeffrey's latest thriller, and it's sure to give readers a restless night with its addictive, nail-biting and absolutely terrifying storyline.

Diane’s The Couple at Causeway Cottage is a dark, complex and electrifying page-turner that masterfully delves into toxic relationships, family secrets and the catastrophic outcomes of past mistakes, spiced with tension, foreboding and terror.

I enjoyed this book although I did think the plot was mostly based on coincidences and at times I kept thinking this would never happen. Having a couple live in a remote location provides the perfect setting for remoteness and feeling cut off. There is a lot of deceit in this which made for entertaining reading as well.

Reading Between the Wines book review #59/115 for 2023:

Sipping thoughts: This book was written with a lot of suspense that makes you question what happened in the past for these characters. There is predictability of some parts but some parts that left me like OMG, I would have never guessed. I did not care for the men characters in this book or Kat, the main female character, for most of this book. The ending held that suspense and made me wonder. I like Jeffrey’s reading style and this one was okay just not my favorite of hers.

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @HQ for an advanced copy of @TheCoupleAtCausewayCottage.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
The narrative style in this book built the suspense in an excellent manner - we have hints that something happened with a young friend from the early pages, and it's not a surprise to find out what occurred. However, the events now that Mark and Kat have moved to this small, remote community throw surprise after surprise and I found the whole novel ran at fast pace to a completely unexpected conclusion. Superb plot, well-written, left me wanting a sequel!

The Couple at Causeway Cottage was a slow start. To be honest at first I wondered if I could get into it, however, I found myself hooked after a bit. The book had a couple predictable twists, but overall I still felt like I couldn’t perfectly pinpoint what the ending was going to be as I was reading. Overall I highly recommend if you love suspense!

3.5 stars
The setting of this book is absolutely gorgeous! Very descriptive and atmospheric. I am drawn to Island settings. This is set on the Northern Irish Coast so I was eager to learn more about that.

The main characters, husband and wife, Kat and Mark, buy Causeway Cottage to be near Mark's mother who is failing in health. It seems ideal at first and they make new friends and acclimate to the community. It's a slow burn with a lot of thoughts and details shared. It was a bit wordy at times for me but the coastal setting really drew me in.

There is a back story to unravel, a mystery about an event that Kat was involved in when she was young, but I felt it took too long to get there. I also found it a bit too unbelievable. I didn't care much for the characters, making it hard to enjoy a read. Everyone is unreliable and hiding something. But what? What is truth and what are the lies that will destroy several lives?

Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy to read for review.
